One of the major problems found when developing a 3D recognition system involves the choice of keypoint detector and descriptor. To help solve this problem, we present a new method for the detection of 3D keypoints on point clouds and we perform benchmarking between each pair of 3D keypoint detector and 3D descriptor to evaluate their performance on object and category recognition. These evaluations are done in a public database of real 3D objects. Our keypoint detector is inspired by the behavior ...

In Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) of large structures we often need to process sensor data from multiple nonsimultaneously recorded measurement setups. These setups share some sensors in common, the so-called reference sensors that are fixed for all the measurements, while the other sensors are moved from one setup to the next. To obtain the modal parameters of the investigated structure, it is necessary to process the data of all the measurement setups and normalize it as the unmeasured background ...

In order to thrive in constantly changing environments, animals must adaptively respond to threatening events. Noxious stimuli are not only processed according to their absolute intensity, but also to their context. Adaptation processes can cause animals to habituate at different rates and degrees in response to permanent or repeated stimuli. Here, we used a forward genetic approach in Caenorhabditis elegans to identify a neuropeptidergic pathway, essential to prevent fast habituation and maintain ...

This study describes, in detail, the chemical modification of sugarcane bagasse with phthalic anhydride to produce a carboxylate-functionalized sugarcane bagasse (SPA). The optimized modification conditions yielded SPA with a percent weight gain of 77.08% and an amount of carboxylic acid groups of 4.76 mmol/g. The SPA was characterized by PZC, FTIR, elemental analysis, TGA, and SEM-EDX. An SPA adsorbent was used to remove Co2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ from aqueous solution in mono- and multicomponent systems ...

Viral invasion into a host is initially recognized by the innate immune system, mainly through activation of the intracellular cytosolic signaling pathway and coordinated activation of interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) transcription factors that promote type I interferon gene induction. The TANK-binding Kinase 1 (TBK1) phosphorylates and activates IRF3. Here, we show that Optineurin (Optn) dampens the antiviral innate immune response by targeting the deubiquitinating ...

This paper deals with the influence of the shape of the driving waveform on the frequency responses of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators under nonlinear actuation. Our models show that, at large oscillation amplitudes, these responses are strongly dependent on the shape of the actuation waveform so that the nonlinear frequency response is not the system signature, but the system signature under a specific driving waveform. The case of a MEMS resonator electrostatically driven with ...

Migration of circulating leukocytes from the vasculature into the surrounding tissue is an important component of the inflammatory response. Among the cell surface molecules identified as contributing to leukocyte extravasation is VCAM-1, expressed on activated vascular endothelium, which participates in all stages of leukocyte-endothelial interaction by binding to leukocyte surface expressed integrin VLA-4. However, not all VLA-4-mediated events can be linked to VCAM-1. A novel interaction between ...

Abstract. Earth system models (ESMs) are increasing in complexity by incorporating more processes than their predecessors, making them potentially important tools for studying the evolution of climate and associated biogeochemical cycles. However, their coupled behaviour has only recently been examined in any detail, and has yielded a very wide range of outcomes. For example, coupled climate–carbon cycle models that represent land-use change simulate total land carbon stores at 2100 that vary by ...
