Providing a geriatric assessment (GA) summary with management recommendations to oncologists reduces clinician-rated toxicity in older patients with advanced cancer receiving treatment. This secondary analysis of a national cluster randomized clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02054741) aims to assess the effects of a GA intervention on symptomatic toxicity measured by Patient-Reported Outcomes Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE).

Ben E. Barber, Ellen M. G. Jamieson, Leah White, Charlie T. McTernan,

The self-assembly of metal-organic cages enables the rapid creation of atomically defined, three-dimensional, nanoscale architectures reminiscent of proteins. However, existing metal-organic cages are almost exclusively built from rigid and flat aromatic panels, limiting binding selectivity and, often, water solubility. Herein, we disclose a new class of cages—metal-peptidic cages—which utilize water-soluble, chiral, and helical oligoproline strands of varying lengths to generate highly anisotropic ...

An experimental analysis of the architecture of an SIMD/MIMD parallel processing system is presented. Detailed implementations of parallel fast Fourier transform (FFT) programs were used to examine the performance of the prototype of the PASM (Partitionable SIMD/MIMD) parallel processing system. Detailed execution-time measurements using specialized timing hardware were made for the complete FFT and for components of SIMD, MIMD, and barrier-synchronized MIMD implementations. The component measurements ...

SIMD (single instruction stream - multiple data stream) algorithms for one- and two-dimensional discrete Fourier transforms are presented. Parallel structurings of algorithms for efficient computation for a variety of machine size/problem size combinations are presented and analyzed. Through these algorithms, techniques for exploiting relationships between problem size and machine size are demonstrated. The algorithms are evaluated in terms of the number of arithmetic operations and interprocessor ...

Parallel processing is one approach to achieving the large computational processing capabilities required by many real-time computing tasks. One of the problems that must be addressed in the use of reconfigurable multiprocessor systems is matching the architecture configuration to the algorithms to be executed. This paper presents a conceptual model that explores the potential of artificial intelligence tools, specifically expert systems, to design an Intelligent Operating System for multiprocessor ...

A parallel algorithm for extracting the roots of a polynomial is presented. The algorithm is based on Graeffe's method, which is rarely used in serial implementations, because it is slower than many common serial algorithms, but is particularly well suited to parallel implementation. Graeffe's method is an iterative technique, and parallelism is used to reduce the execution time per iteration. A high degree of parallelism is possible, and only simple interprocessor communication is required. For ...

A software environment tailored to computer vision and image processing (CVIP) that focuses on how information about the CVIP problem domain can make the high-performance algorithms and the sophisticated algorithm techniques being designed by algorithm experts more readily available to CVIP researchers is presented. The environment consists of three principle components: DISC, Cloner, and Graph Matcher. DISC (dynamic intelligent scheduling and control) supports experimentation at the CVIP task level ...

Undergraduate students in engineering face a future in which they will need more than just a solid technical background. In setting the goals for any system they are asked to design, they will be expected to interact effectively with people of widely varying social and educational backgrounds. They will then be expected to work with people of many different technical backgrounds to achieve these goals. They thus need educational experiences that can help them develop these skills.

In this paper we present an overview of techniques used to implement various image and video compression algorithms using parallel processing. Approaches used can largely be divided into four areas. The first is the use of special purpose architectures designed specifically for image and video compression. An example of this is the use of an array of DSP chips to implement a version of MPEG1. The second approach is the use of VLSI techniques. These include various chip sets for JPEG and MPEG1. The ...

This paper describes the performance of six lateral flow sand filters (LFSFs) for their treatment of septic tank effluent in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. This report presents LFSF performance data collected during the first year of monitoring (Sept. 2004–Sept. 2005). The objectives of this initial study were to: (i) Evaluate the performance of LFSFs in field conditions and determine the influence of temperature and external hydrologic processes on treatment processes; (ii) evaluate the effects of slope ...

Introduces a new recursion that reduces the complexity of training a semi-Markov model with continuous output distributions. It is shown that the cost of training is proportional to M/sup 2/+D, compared to M/sup 2/D with the standard recursion, where M is the observation vector length and D is the maximum allowed duration. >

Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are currently the most successful paradigm for speech recognition. Although explicit duration continuous HMMs more accurately model speech than HMMs with implicit duration modeling, the cost of accurate duration modeling is often considered prohibitive. This paper describes a parallel implementation of an HMM with explicit duration modeling for spoken language recognition on the MasPar MP-1. The MP-1 is a fine-grained SIMD architecture with 16384 processing elements (PEs) ...

We present analytical and experimental results for fine-grained list ranking algorithms. We compare the scalability of two representative algorithms on random lists, then address the question of how the locality properties of image edge lists can be used to improve the performance of this highly data-dependent operation. Starting with Wyllie's algorithm and Anderson and Miller's randomized algorithm as bases, we use the spatial locality of edge links to derive scalable algorithms designed to exploit ...

This paper presents a technique to incorporate psychoacoustic models into an adaptive wavelet packet scheme to achieve perceptually transparent compression of high-quality (34.1 kHz) audio signals at about 45 kb/s. The filter bank structure adapts according to psychoacoustic criteria and according to the computational complexity that is available at the decoder. This permits software implementations that can perform according to the computational power available in order to achieve real time coding/ ...

This paper examines the history of electrical engineering education, leveraging the concept of "expansive (dis)integration" to frame a number of key trends and challenges in the field. Our account is organized historically, starting with the origins and early development of electrical engineering education beginning in the late 1800s, and then tracing out the rise of new subfields and specialties during the inter-war and post-WWII periods. The development of computer engineering as a field is given ...

The purpose of the system is to provide a rapid prototyping capability for computer vision/image processing tasks. Since conventional scheduling methods cannot produce schedules for most tasks of this ...
