Sustainable Agricultural Practices (SAPs) are the most promising pathways to enhance the productivity and resilience of agricultural production of smallholder farming systems while conserving the natural resources. This study was undertaken to identify the barriers affecting sustainable agricultural productivity of smallholder farmers in the eastern Free State, South Africa. Data were collected from 359 smallholder farmers using questionnaires and the validity of the collected data was confirmed ...

In a study of the phenomenon of catalyst deactivation during storage, Au/TiO2 catalyst was stored under various conditions, viz. vacuum, nitrogen, air, refrigeration, dark, and light, and tested for CO oxidation activity at regular intervals. The data shows that the catalyst deactivates under all the storage conditions over 12 months and that storage in vacuum significantly enhances the rate and extent of deactivation. Storage in light accelerates the deactivation. The catalyst appears to deactivate ...

The complexes trans-[Rh(X)(XNC)(PPh 3) 2] (X = Cl, 1; Br, 2; SC 6F 5, 3; C 2Ph, 4; XNC = xylyl isocyanide) combine reversibly with molecular oxygen to give [Rh(X)(O 2)(XNC)(PPh 3) 2] of which [Rh(SC 6F 5)(O 2)(XNC)(PPh 3) 2] ( 7) and [Rh(C 2Ph)(O 2)(XNC)(PPh 3) 2] ( 8) are sufficiently stable to be isolated in crystalline form. Complexes 2, 3, 4, and 7 have been structurally characterized. Kinetic data for the dissociation of O 2 from the dioxygen adducts of 1- 4 were obtained using (31)P NMR to monitor changes ...

This article highlights evidence and lessons learned from the InnovAfrica project conducted by the Agricultural Research Council in collaboration with other international organizations between 2017 and 2021. This project aimed to test and upscale best-bet Sustainable Agricultural Intensification (SAI) practices through Multi-Actor Platforms (MAPs) and improved dissemination strategies across six African countries (viz. Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa and Tanzania). The goal of the project ...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic pollutants known for their persistence and potential carcinogenicity. Effective removal techniques are required since their presence in wastewater poses serious threats to human health and the environment. In this review study, iron oxide nanomaterials (IONs), a by-product of mining operations, recovered from acid mine water are used to investigate the adsorption of PAHs from wastewater. The mechanisms of PAH adsorption onto IONs are investigated, ...

A class of hazardous chemical molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are frequently detected in environmental samples such as soil, water, and air. Because of their carcinogenic and mutagenic qualities, PAHs pose a significant threat to both human health and the environment. Therefore, the identification and extraction of PAHs from environmental samples is crucial for monitoring and assessing their presence and potential risks. An overview of these recent advancements is given ...

Tungsten‐183 NMR data are reported for the complexes cis ‐[W(CO) 4 (PPh 3 )(4‐RC 5 H 4 N)] (R = H, Me, Ph, COMe, COPh, OMe, NMe 2 , Cl, NO 2 ). The 183 W chemical shift (obtained by indirect detection using 31 P) is found to correlate with the Hammett σ function for the group R, with 183 W shielding increasing approximately linearly with the donor strength of the pyridine over a range of 93 ppm. The X‐ray structures of cis ‐[W(CO) 4 (PPh 3 )(4‐MeOC 5 H 4 N)] and cis ‐[W(CO) 4 (PPh 3 )(4‐PhCOC 5 H 4 N)] are also reported. ...

Food insecurity or lack of access to adequate and nutritious food is a major determinant of under‐nutrition. Expenditure patterns accompanied by unemployment, low level of education, inflation and high food prices have a direct negative impact on food availability within households (Moller, 1997). Ghany and Schwenk (1993) found that as household income increases, the proportion of expenditures on food decreases, the proportion of expenditures on clothing, rent, fuel, and light stayed the same and ...

Acute lymphocytic leukaemia is the most common leukemic cancer reported in children. Chemotherapy is the preferred treatment even though it continues to pose negative side effects of toxicity. Medicinal plants are reported to provide alternative treatment with lower toxicity levels. The three Amaryllidaceae species; Crinum bulbispermum, Boophone disticha, and Amaryllis belladonna Linnaeus have been reported for their anti-leukemic properties. These claims, however, lack supporting scientific data. ...

The interaction between COVID-19, non-communicable diseases, and chronic infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis is unclear, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries in Africa. South Africa has a national HIV prevalence of 19% among people aged 15-49 years and a tuberculosis prevalence of 0·7% in people of all ages. Using a nationally representative hospital surveillance system in South Africa, we aimed to investigate the factors associated with in-hospital mortality among ...
