The utilization of spin waves as eigenmodes of the magnetization dynamics for information processing and communication has been widely explored recently due to its high operational speed with low power consumption and possible applications for quantum computations. Previous proposals of spin wave Mach-Zehnder devices were based on the spin wave phase, a delicate entity which can be easily disrupted. Here, we propose a complete logic system based on the spin wave amplitude utilizing the nonreciprocal ...

In ferromagnetic thin films, broken inversion symmetry and spin-orbit coupling give rise to interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Analytic expressions for spin-wave properties show that the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction leads to nonreciprocal spin-wave propagation, i.e., different properties for spin waves propagating in opposite directions. In favorable situations, it can increase the spin-wave attenuation length. Comparing measured spin-wave properties in ferromagnet/ ...

The performance of spintronic devices critically depends on three material parameters, namely, the spin polarization in the current ($P$), the intrinsic Gilbert damping ($\ensuremath{\alpha}$), and the coefficient of the nonadiabatic spin transfer torque ($\ensuremath{\beta}$). However, there has been no method to determine these crucial material parameters in a self-contained manner. Here we show that $P$, $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ can be simultaneously determined by performing a single ...

A current-induced domain wall motion in magnetic nanowires with a strong structural inversion asymmetry [I.M. Miron, T. Moore, H. Szambolics, L.D. Buda-Prejbeanu, S. Auffret, B. Rodmacq, S. Pizzini, J. Vogel, M. Bonfim, A. Schuhl, G. Gaudin, Nat. Mat. 10 (2011) 419] seems to have novel features such as the domain wall motion along the current direction or the delay of the onset of the Walker breakdown. In such a highly asymmetric system, the Rashba spin–orbit coupling (RSOC) may affect a domain wall ...

A magnetic vortex wall motion driven by propagating spin waves in a nanostrip is investigated by means of micromagnetic simulation. Propagating spin waves can drive a vortex wall into a stream motion in spite of its complex internal spin structure. Compared to the transverse wall, the vortex wall moves faster and its velocity is less sensitive to the spin wave frequency. The amplitude of spin waves changes when passing through the domain wall, closely related to the domain wall velocity. This domain- ...

We report a time-resolved propagating spin wave spectroscopy for Fe19Ni81 film. We show that the amplitude of the spin-wave packet depends on the direction of magnetization and that its phase can be controlled by the polarity of pulsed magnetic field for the excitation. The nonreciprocal emission of spin-wave packet can be utilized for the binary spin-wave input into the spin-wave logic circuit.

The current-induced modification of the attenuation of a propagating spin wave in a magnetic nanowire is studied theoretically and numerically. The attenuation length of spin wave can increase when the spin waves and electrons move in the same direction. It is directly affected by the nonadiabaticity of the spin-transfer torque and thus can be used to estimate the nonadiabaticity. When the nonadiabatic spin torque is sufficiently large, the attenuation length becomes negative, resulting in the amplification ...

Using micromagnetic simulations, the authors investigate the effects of the shape anisotropy of nanowires on the threshold current density (JC) in the adiabatic limit. It is observed that the type of domain wall significantly affects the dependence of JC on the shape anisotropy. For a transverse wall, JC is proportional to the shape anisotropy, but slightly deviates from the theoretical prediction [G. Tatara and H. Kohno, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 086601 (2004)] possibly due to antivortex formation. For ...

We investigate current-induced magnetization switching for a multilayer structure that allows a reduced switching current while maintaining high thermal stability of the magnetization. The structure consists of a perpendicular polarizer, a perpendicular free-layer, and an additional free-layer having in-plane magnetization. When the current runs perpendicular to the structure, the in-plane free-layer undergoes a precession and supplies an internal rf field to the perpendicular free-layer, resulting ...

Photo process defect reduction is one of the most important factors to improve the process stability and yield in sub-0.18um DUV process. In this paper, a new approach to minimize the Deep-UV (DUV) Chemically Amplified Resist (CAR) and Bottom Anti-Reflective Coating (BARC) induced defect known as UFO (UnidentiFied Object) defect will be introduced. These defects have mild surface topography difference on BARC; it only exists on the wide exposed area where there is no photoresist pattern. In this test, ...

Ultrathin magnetic systems have properties qualitatively different from their thicker counterparts, implying that different physics governs their properties. We demonstrate that various such properties can be explained naturally by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in ultrathin magnetic systems. This work will be valuable for the development of next generation spintronic devices based on ultrathin magnetic systems.

A full micromagnetic model and a simplified one-dimensional analytical model are used to investigate the domain wall dynamics driven by an oblique magnetic field. Both models show that the Walker breakdown [N. L. Schryer and L. R. Walker, J. Appl. Phys. 45, 5406 (1974)] can occur at two distinct field strengths. However, the two models exhibit an important discrepancy due to the antivortex injection at the Walker field, which is not taken into account in the analytical model. The chirality of the ...

We conducted a micromagnetic modeling study to investigate the spin torque oscillator (STO) using a perpendicular polarizer. We used an additional layer of negative anisotropy constant materials (NAM) on a conventional STO. For the NAM layer, the magnetic easy plane is parallel to the in-plane easy axis of the free layer, and inhibits the development of the out-of-plane component of the magnetization in the free layer. As a result, this new type of STO provides a high frequency limit up to 50 GHz.

We theoretically study the current-induced dynamics of a transverse magnetic domain wall in bi-layer nanowires consisting of a ferromagnet on top of a nonmagnet having strong spin-orbit coupling. Domain wall dynamics is characterized by two threshold current densities, $J_{th}^{WB}$ and $J_{th}^{REV}$, where $J_{th}^{WB}$ is a threshold for the chirality switching of the domain wall and $J_{th}^{REV}$ is another threshold for the reversed domain wall motion caused by spin Hall effect. Domain walls with ...

Temporal and spatial variation of magnetization generates an additional damping torque due to spin-motive force. We performed semi-one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) micromagnetic simulations to investigate effect of the additional damping on the field-driven transverse wall dynamics in a magnetic nanowire. At the magnetic field above the Walker breakdown field, the additional damping due to the spin-motive force causes an increase of domain wall velocity. In semi-1-D model, the amount ...

We studied the effect of Oersted field (HOe) on current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) in magnetic nanowires. We found that HOe generates spin waves. Because of interaction between domain wall (DW) and spin wave, time-dependent wall velocity is oscillatory at the early stage of wall motion. The period of the oscillatory DW motion is in antiphase with the period of out-of-plane (OOP) magnetization oscillation inside the DW. The oscillatory wall velocity is suppressed as the thickness of nanowire ...
