RNA interference (RNAi) is a 'knock-down' reaction to reduce expression of a specific gene through highly regulated, enzyme-mediated processes. Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are RNA molecules that play an effector role in RNAi and can bind the PAZ domains present in Dicer and RISC. We investigated the interaction between the PAZ domain and the siRNA-like duplexes through dissociation molecular dynamics (DMD) simulations. Specifically, we focused on the response of the PAZ domain to various 3′-overhang ...

We present a new docking model for HERG channel blockade. Our new model suggests three key interactions such that (1) a protonated nitrogen of the channel blocker forms a hydrogen bond with the carbonyl oxygen of HERG residue T623; (2) an aromatic moiety of the channel blocker makes a π–π interaction with the aromatic ring of HERG residue Y652; and (3) a hydrophobic group of the channel blocker forms a hydrophobic interaction with the benzene ring of HERG residue F656. The previous model assumes two ...

Interface trap densities at gate oxide/silicon substrate (SiO 2 /Si) interfaces of metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) were determined measuring the substrate bias dependence of the subthreshold slope. This method enables the characterization of interface traps residing between the midgap and strong inversion (2 times the Fermi potential) of small MOSFETs. In consequence of the high accuracy of this method, the energy dependence of the interface trap density is more reliable. ...

Magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) is to visualize the internal current density and conductivity of an electrically conductive object. Injecting current through surface electrodes, we measure one component of the induced internal magnetic flux density using an MRI scanner. In order to reconstruct the conductivity distribution inside the imaging object, most algorithms in MREIT have required multiple magnetic flux density data by injecting at least two independent currents. ...

Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 6 (CEACAM6) inhibits anoikis and affects the malignant phenotype of cancer cells. In this study, we analyzed CEACAM6 as a gene that is highly upregulated in colon cancer tissues, and examined the assertion that CEACAM6 might be a suitable candidate tumor marker for the diagnosis of colon cancer. CEACAM6 gene expression in human colon tissues was performed by tissue microarray and analyzed using RT-PCR (each of normal and tumor tissue, n = 40) and ...

Abstract Chitosan/calcium‐alginate beads were prepared by a coacervation method in aqueous medium. Their swelling properties and morphologies were studied. Complexed beads with a mean diameter of 500 μm were obtained by dropwise addition of a sodium alginate solution into a chitosan‐calcium chloride solution. From scanning electron microscopic studies, we observed that chitosan modifies the morphology of calcium‐alginate beads. The swelling properties of chitosan/calcium‐alginate beads are different ...

An aim of magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) is to visualize the internal current density and conductivity of the electrically imaged object by injecting current through electrodes attached to it. Due to a limited amount of injection current, one of the most important factors in MREIT is how to control the noise contained in the measured magnetic flux density data. This paper describes a new iterative algorithm called the transversal J-substitution algorithm which is robust ...

The recessed-gate AlGaN/GaN metal–oxide–semiconductor heterostructure field-effect transistors (MOSHFETs) with a p-GaN back-barrier studied in this work exhibited much lower buffer leakage current than those without the back-barrier. The threshold voltage of the device with the p-GaN back-barrier was controlled by varying the depth of gate recess etching, and a value as high as 2.9 V was obtained with deep gate-recess etching into the channel layer. The device structure has the advantage of both ...

Treatment of streptozotocin (ST), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) resulted in destroying insulin-secreting β-cells of pancreatic islets and impairment of islet glucose oxidation and glucose-induced insulin secretion. IL-1β and TNF-α inhibited insulin release and glucose utilization and oxidation. It was shown that the inhibitory effects of ST, IL-1β, and TNF-α were due to impaired glucokinase activity. Glucokinase activity was severely impaired by ST, IL-1β, and TNF-α treatments, ...

Abstract Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a high-resolution imaging technique with subnanometer spatial resolution that is widely used in materials science, basic science, and nanofabrication. However, conducting SEM is rather complex due to the nature of using an electron beam and the many parameters that must be adjusted to acquire high-quality images. Only trained operators can use SEM equipment properly, meaning that the use of SEM is restricted. To broaden the usability of SEM, we propose ...

A novel simplified fabrication method of a very high density p-channel trench gate power MOSFET using four mask layers and nitride/TEOS sidewall spacers is realized. The proposed process showed improved on-resistance characteristics of the device with increasing cell density and the cost-effective production capability due to the lesser number of processing steps. By using this process technique, a remarkably increased high density (100 Mcell/inch 2 ) trench gate power MOSFET with a cell pitch of 2. ...
