Photovoltaic (PV) energy generation in microgrids (MGs) is increasing. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) reduce the fluctuations in PV outputs caused by the intermittent availability of solar energy. Although BESSs are advantageous for stable MG operation, they are still relatively expensive. By remaining within the operational limits during normal and contingency operation, optimal sizing of BESS is required to maintain security considering cost of MG system. This paper proposes a BESS sizing ...

As renewable penetration increases in microgrids (MGs), the use of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) has become indispensable for optimal MG operation. Although BESSs are advantageous for economic and stable MG operation, their life degradation should be considered for maximizing cost savings. This paper proposes an optimal BESS scheduling for MGs to solve the stochastic unit commitment problem, considering the uncertainties in renewables and load. Through the proposed BESS scheduling, the life ...

Abstract In this paper the bending collapse characteristics of steel square and rectangular steel tubes are studied using a test machine which applies pure bending moment without imposing shear and tensile forces. Under pure bending moment, delayed buckling modes occur and dependent on the deformation test length and shape of section. For delayed mode, the strain energy absorbed through bending of the tubes is also verified by finite element analysis. Overall, the theory developed here shows the ...

It has been generally accepted that calcium intake prevents bone loss, and frequent fracture resulted from osteoporosis. However, it is still elusive as to how effective sole calcium intake is in preventing or attenuating the severity of osteoporosis. Here, we demonstrate the effects of eggshell-casein phosphopeptide (ES-CPP), and compared these effects those of calcium supplement, for restoring ovariectomy-mediated bone loss. CPP, synthesized from the hydrolysis of casein (0.5%) using trypsin, was ...

Abstract This paper presents results of quasi-static and dynamic axial collapse tests on extruded 6061T6, 6063T6, 6005A thick aluminum prismatic tubes. The force-shortening curves from experiments are compared with those calculated using explicit code and CRASH CAD. The estimate of the maximum crippling force is expressed as a function of section geometry and material property by using dimensional analysis. The approximate results of dimensional analysis are in good agreement with the experiments.

It is well known that requirements engineering plays a critical role in software quality. The use case approach is a requirements elicitation technique commonly used in industrial applications. Software requirements are stated as a collection of use cases, each of which is written in the user's perspective and describes a specific flow of events in the system. The use case approach offers several practical advantages in that use case requirements are relatively easy to describe, understand, and ...

Single-layer graphene absorbs a small fraction of incident terahertz waves by intraband transition of Dirac fermions. The amounts of absorption, reflection, and transmission of terahertz waves depend on the doping level of graphene, i.e., the Fermi level, and they exhibit relatively weak frequency dependency at terahertz frequencies. By hybridizing gated single-layer graphene with a non-resonant meta-atom structure, we show that the effective surface conductivity of meta-atom hybridized graphene ...

Abstract Refactoring is a widely accepted technique to improve the software quality by restructuring its design without changing its behavior. In general, a sequence of refactorings needs to be applied until the quality of the code is improved satisfactorily. In this case, the final design after refactoring can vary with the application order of refactorings, thereby producing different quality improvements. Therefore, it is necessary to determine a proper refactoring schedule to obtain as many ...

The coupling measurements of object oriented programs can be valuable information for various maintenance tasks and there exists a variety of metrics proposed by numerous researchers. Those metrics, however, cannot measure the strength of dependencies between classes, but only imply the existence of dependencies. Hence they are of limited value for assisting maintenance tasks such as refactoring and system decomposition, which requires information about the strength of dependency. In this paper, ...
