Ternary alloy catalysts outperform their binary counterparts in many reactions although the direct observation of structural evolution under reaction conditions to understand the structure–performance relationship significantly lacks. In situ transmission electron microscopy at atmospheric pressure provides a great opportunity to uncover dynamic structure and composition changes of ternary alloy nanoparticles. In this work, the atomic-scale elemental diffusion and surface reconstruction of ternary ...

A novel non-invasive imaging technique to image the vein patterns in various parts of the hand for biometric purposes is evaluated. Two imaging methods are investigated: far-infrared (FIR) thermography and near-infrared (NIR) imaging. Experiments involving data acquisition from various parts of the hand, including the back of the hand, palm and wrist, were carried out using both imaging techniques. Analysis of the data collected shows that FIR thermography is less successful at capturing veins in ...

This article discusses social practices, everyday routine and the social and juridical conflicts related to slave prostitutes and their mistresses during the 1860's and 1870's. The text also discusses the campaign of the abolicionists which culminated in the Brazilian Slavery Law of 1871, also known as the Law of the Free Womb.

Self-assembled “supra-molecular” liquid-crystalline phases were investigated in one of a series of symmetrically tapered bisamides based on an amide core of 1,2-bis[3,4,5-tris(alkan-1-yloxy)benzamido]benzene and three alkyl tails on each side of the core. One of this series of bisamides having 14 carbon atoms in each tail (abbreviated as C14PhBA) served as an example in this study. Differential scanning calorimetry thermal diagrams showed two main phase transition processes in C14PhBA. Wide-angle ...

Abstract A coagulation (FeCl 3 )-ultrafiltration process was used to treat two different raw waters with/without the presence of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle contaminants. The existence of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles in the raw water was found to increase both irreversible and reversible membrane fouling. The trans-membrane pressure (TMP) increase was similar in the early stages of the membrane runs for both raw waters, while it increased rapidly after about 15 days in the raw water with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, ...

Abstract The host–guest interaction can remarkably alter the physiochemical properties of composite materials. It is crucial to clarify the mechanism by revealing the influence of the host on the electronic structure of the guest molecules. Herein, we study the structural variation of polyoxometalates (POMs) after being confined in single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT). What we found is that in addition to the reported charge transfer from SWNT to POM, an intramolecular electron transfer within a ...

Arc is an immediate-early gene whose genetic ablation selectively abrogates long-term memory, indicating a critical role in memory consolidation. Although Arc protein is found at synapses, it also localizes to the neuronal nucleus, where its function is less understood. Nuclear Arc forms a complex with the β-spectrin isoform βSpIVΣ5 and associates with PML bodies, sites of epigenetic regulation of gene expression. We report here a novel interaction between Arc and Tip60, a histone-acetyltransferase ...

The removal of natural organic matter (NOM), particularly humic substances (HS) from surface waters during drinking water treatment is necessary to avoid various water quality problems in supply, such as the formation of disinfection by-products. As an alternative to conventional processes (e.g. coagulation), and in the light of the rapidly increasing applications of nanozyme in bio-catalysis, a novel Fe-N-C oxidase-like nanozyme (FeNZ) has been prepared and used to catalyze the oxidative degradation ...

Abstract Background The role of Numb, a protein that is important for cell fate and development and that, in human muscle, is expressed at reduced levels with advanced age, was investigated; adult mice skeletal muscle and its localization and function within myofibres were determined. Methods Numb expression was evaluated by western blot. Numb localization was determined by confocal microscopy. The effects of conditional knock out (cKO) of Numb and the closely related gene Numb‐like in skeletal muscle ...

Ferritin is a protein that stores and releases iron to prevent diseases associated with iron dysregulation in plants, animals, and bacteria. The conversion between iron-loaded holo-ferritin and empty apo-ferritin is an important process for iron regulation. To date, studies of ferritin have used either ensemble measurements to quantify the characteristics of a large number of proteins or single-molecule approaches to interrogate labeled or modified proteins. Here we demonstrate the first real-time ...

Coals from three seam sections in the Songzao Coalfield, SW China, are mainly high-ash, high-sulphur semianthracites. Minerals within the Songzao coals are mainly kaolinite, pyrite (or marcasite in some cases), and quartz, with various proportions of non-kaolinite clay minerals, carbonates, feldspars, and anatase. The illite and mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) are Na-rich in some of the Datong coal samples. The I/S in the lower coals of the Datong section is most likely an alteration product of ...

Clay minerals are generally used as pivotal indicators to reveal diagenetic parameters such as temperature and pH in hydrothermal ore-forming systems. Within the Late Permian Nb-Zr-REY-Ga-mineralized horizons in eastern Yunnan, the elevated enrichment of critical metals has been considered to be closely associated with abundant clay minerals. In this paper, the identification, abundance, morphology, modes of occurrence, and chemical compositions of two phyllosilicate minerals, namely chamosite (chlorite ...

Zinc blende and wurtzitic GaN films have been epitaxially grown onto (001)Si by electron <m1;&1p>cyclotron resonance microwave plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy, using a two-step growth process. In this process a thin buffer layer is grown at relatively low temperatures followed by a higher temperature growth of the rest of the film. GaN films grown on a single crystalline GaN buffer have the zinc blende structure, while those grown on a polycrystalline or amorphous buffer have ...

The minimum convex hull polygon of the point cloud map is obtained through the Graham-scan algorithm. Most current research that exists on gift card use addresses their risks for consumers and retailers (e.g., Horne 2007a, Horne 2007b), although recent work by Tuten and Kiecker (2009) greatly expands our understanding of how teenage consumers value gift cards on both practical and emotional levels. In light of the absence of research on this topic overall, we expanded the preliminary scope of our inquiry to include three fundamental questions related to gift card giving: 1) Who buys gift cards? 2) ...

We have studied the zero-field hyperfine splitting of in ferrimagnetic (x = 1, 1.5, 2) using spin-echo NMR at 4.2 K. Distinct spectra arising from the different sites characterized by the numbers of carbon nearest neighbours (NN = 0, 1, 2, 3) are observed. The measured hyperfine parameters and for all four spectra are given for x = 1.5 and 2. Analysis of the quadrupolar splitting indicates that in the dominant contribution to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy arises from the NN = 3 sites.
