Nanocrystalline Cr–C–N coatings were deposited by pulsed closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The microstructure, chemical composition and elemental chemical state of the coatings were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, glancing incident angle x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Mechanical and tribological properties of the coatings were measured by nanoindentation and ball-on-disk wear tests. The Cr–C–N coatings consist of nanocrystalline ...

CrN/TiN multilayer coatings were deposited by pulsed dc magnetron sputtering (PDCMS) in a closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system. The Ti target power was maintained at 2000 W while the Cr target power was varied from 70 to 1000 W. As the Cr target power was increased, CrN/TiN multilayer coatings with the Cr/(Cr + Ti) ratio of 0.037–0.573 had a single phase face-centered cubic structure with a texture evolution from (111) to (220). The residual stress of the coatings increased from − 1.03 GPa ...

This study´s core objective is to validate whether the model proposed by Moore (1975) - also known as Moore’s Law – adequately describes the technological evolution of microprocessors. It further poses to verify whether this model is a feasible predictive tool and, finally, present an alternative model. To this extent, the forecasting technique method, based on historical data projections, will be applied. Statistical tests employed presented strong indications that the method proposed by Moore (1975) ...

Deep oscillation magnetron sputtering (DOMS) is an alternative high-power pulsed magnetron sputtering technique, which offers virtually arc-free depositions especially for reactive depositions of some insulating coatings under optimized pulsing conditions. CrN/TiN superlattice coatings with a modulated period (Λ) ranging from 5.7 to 10.2 nm were deposited using a combination of DOMS and pulsed dc magnetron sputtering in a closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system. As a Λ was increased from ...

Cable-shaped supercapacitors (SCs) have recently aroused significant attention due to their attractive properties such as small size, lightweight, and bendability. Current cable-shaped SCs have symmetric device configuration. However, if an asymmetric design is used in cable-shaped supercapacitors, they would become more attractive due to broader cell operation voltages, which results in higher energy densities. Here, a novel coil-type asymmetric supercapacitor electrical cable (CASEC) is reported ...

The world is recently witnessing an explosive development of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices that demand more-reliable power sources that combine higher energy density and longer-term durability. Supercapacitors have become one of the most promising energy-storage systems, as they present multifold advantages of high power density, fast charging-discharging, and long cyclic stability. However, the intrinsically low energy density inherent to traditional supercapacitors severely limits ...

Thick and dense CrN/AlN superlattice coatings (up to10 μm) have been deposited by a hybrid magnetron sputtering process from metallic Cr and Al targets, which were powered by modulated pulsed power (MPP) magnetron sputtering and middle frequency pulsed dc magnetron sputtering (PMS) techniques, respectively. The bilayer period (Λ) of the coatings was changed from 10 to 2.5 nm by varying the ratio of the N2 flow rate to the total gas flow rate. The microstructure and properties of the CrN/AlN coatings ...

Monitoring battery health is challenging. Self-reporting enables the rapid health assessment of redox flow batteries (RFBs) and provides insight into degradation mechanisms of electrochemically active molecules (redoxmers). Here we introduce fluorescence as an orthogonal property to probe this chemistry in situ. An established anolyte redoxmer, 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, is rendered an efficient blue-green fluorophore through minimalistic derivatization. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are famous for the intimate coupling between the lattice, electrons, and spin, creating exotic functionality. Creating a surface, breaking the symmetry, should result in lattice distortions that due to the close coupling could create different ``surface phases.'' Historically it has been very difficult to use low energy electron diffraction $I\ensuremath{-}V$ to quantitatively determine the surface structure of TMOs. A signature of this problem is the large values commonly ...
