Nathan J. Clifford, John J. Kelly, THOMAS F. LEO, Howard A. Eder,

Investigation of the members of the White Mountain Apache Tribe has confirmed our clinical experience that coronary artery disease is extremely rare in these people. The Apaches eat a diet low in saturated fat and have a correspondingly low mean serum cholesterol level. Older Apache males tend to have lower cholesterols than the younger men. A surprisingly high prevalence of high blood pressure was found, particularly in young men. A brief discussion of similar studies is included. Further investigation ...

Human keratinocytes in culture were prelabeled with [3H]arachidonic acid (AA) and then exposed to ultraviolet B radiation. Irradiated cells released labeled AA metabolites into media in a dose-dependent manner when compared to sham-irradiated cells. The response began immediately and continued for 24 h. Extracts from media were examined by high-performance liquid chromatography for identification of specific AA metabolites. Irradiated cells were stimulated to produce prostaglandin-like material (PGE2 ...

The subunit assembly of bovine erythrocyte superoxide dismutase has been studied, through analysis of the effects of heat, removal of metal ion cofactors, and disulfide bond reduction, upon the dissociation of the subunits.Investigations utilizing sodium dodecyl sulfate-acrylamide gel electrophoresis and sedimentation equilibrium analysis demonstrate that the 2 polypeptide subunits of the protein are not covalently joined, but are associated through unusually strong noncovalent interactions. This ...

SUFFICIENT information exists concerning the prevalence and the incidence patterns of multiple sclerosis in North America1 , 2 so that communities can now be recognized and statistical documentation can be achieved where either excessive or low frequency rates are believed to occur. Intensive controlled investigations of communities with established high or low rates might lead to the recognition of variables of causative significance. A recent meta-analysis of 17 randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) showed that Short-term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (STPP) for functional somatic disorders (FSD) reduced somatic symptoms compared to wait list, minimal treatment, and treatment-as-usual controls. A clinically important yet unanswered question is how much improvement patients experience within STPP treatment. Following a systematic search, we identified STPP trials presenting data at baseline and post-treatment/follow-up. Meta-analyses ...

In this article, we discuss some issues that arise when ontologies are used to support corporate application domains such as electronic commerce (e-commerce) and some technical problems in deploying ontologies for real-world use. In particular, we focus on issues of ontology integration and the related problem of semantic mapping, that is, the mapping of ontologies and taxonomies to reference ontologies to preserve semantics. Along the way, we discuss what typically constitutes an ontology architecture. ...

Furthermore, unlike cells obtained from VGP and MGP melanomas, cells derived from melanoma in situ and ...
