Abstract. The Mg/Ca ratios of biogenic calcite is commonly seen as a valuable palaeo-proxy for reconstructing past ocean temperatures. The temperature dependence of Mg/Ca ratios in bivalve calcite has been the subject of contradictory observations. The palaeoceanographic use of a geochemical proxy is dependent on initial, rigorous calibration and validation of relationships between the proxy and the ambient environmental variable to be reconstructed. Shell Mg/Ca ratio data are reported for the calcite ...

The combined use of δ18O and another independent palaeotemperature proxy from the same carbonate biomineral archive forms the basis of a much desired palaeosalinity proxy by circumventing the main source of uncertainty in interpreting δ18O palaeorecords, i.e. variations in the isotopic composition of seawater. Contrary to the δ18O proxy, transferring the Mg/Ca–temperature proxy to marine bivalves has proved problematic, since a strong seawater temperature control on shell calcite Mg/Ca has rarely ...

The relationship between potential elemental proxies (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Mn/Ca ratios) and environmental factors was investigated for the bivalve Pecten maximus in a detailed field study undertaken in the Menai Strait, Wales, U.K. An age model constructed for each shell by comparison of measured and predicted oxygen-isotope ratios allowed comparison on a calendar time scale of shell elemental data with environmental variables, as well as estimation of shell growth rates. The seasonal variation of shell ...

Manganese in the shell calcite of marine bivalves has been suggested to reflect ambient seawater Mn concentrations, thus providing a high-resolution archive of past seawater Mn concentrations. However, a quantitative relationship between seawater Mn and shell Mn/Ca ratios, as well as clear understanding of which process(es) control(s) shell Mn/Ca, are still lacking. Blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, were grown in a one-year duration field experiment in the Menai Strait, U.K., to study the relationship ...

Abstract. Small-scale heterogeneity of biogenic carbonate elemental composition can be a significant source of error in the accurate use of element/Ca ratios as geochemical proxies. In this study ion microprobe (SIMS) profiles showed significant small-scale variability of Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Mn/Ca ratios in new shell calcite of the marine bivalves Pecten maximus and Mytilus edulis that was precipitated during a constant-temperature culturing experiment. Elevated Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Mn/Ca ratios were found ...

We present new annually resolved δ 18 O, δ 13 C, Mg/Ca, and Sr/Ca ratio records for two shells of the fast growing Mediterranean fan mussel Pinna nobilis , collected from proximal Spanish coast sea grass meadows. The relationship between the potential geochemical proxies and ontogenetic and environmental controlling factors is investigated. Specifically, the use of shell Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios as potential calcification temperature proxies, the latter calculated from measured shell δ 18 O values, ...

The anomeric alkoxyl radical β-fragmentation (ARF) of carbohydrates possessing an electron-withdrawing group (EWG) at C2, promoted by PhI(OAc)2/I2, gives rise to an acyclic iodide through which a pentavalent atom of phosphorus can be introduced via the Arbuzov reaction. After selective hydrolysis and subsequent cyclization, the phosphonate or phosphinate intermediates can be converted into 2-deoxy-1-phosphahexopyranose and 2-deoxy-1-phosphapentopyranose sugars. The ARF of carbohydrates with an electron- ...

Abstract In this exposition we hope to dispel some common misconceptions about the nature of hysteresis elements are associated with parasitic dynamics in the circuit and therefore should not be considered part of the static characteristics. We examine the Schmitt trigger ciruit, which exhibits hysteresis in its transfer characteristic, and study a neuraltype pulse oscillator, one of a class of oscillators which relies for its operation on diriving point hysteresis. We illustrate the concepts of ...

The dependence of retinal damage threshold on laser spot size was examined for two pulse width regimes; nanosecond-duration Q-switched pulses from a doubled Nd:Yttrium–aluminum–garnet laser and microsecond-duration pulses from a flashlamp-pumped dye laser. Threshold determinations were conducted for nominal retinal image sizes ranging from 1.5 to 100 mrad of visual field, corresponding to image diameters of ∼22 μm to 1.4 mm on the primate retina. In addition, base line collimated-beam damage thresholds ...

Three neurodegenerative diseases, Huntington's disease (HD), Kennedy's disease (hereditary spinobulbar muscular atrophy, SBMA), and type 1 spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA-1) have been found to share a common genetic defect: an unstable region of repeated CAG trinucleotides which are thought to be translated into a polyglutamine moiety. The unstable repeat regions occur near the N-termini of the predicted proteins for HD and SBMA, but the location of the CAG repeat region is not known for SCA-1. Each disease ...

Murine norovirus (MNoV) is an important model of human norovirus (HNoV) and mucosal virus infection more broadly. Viral receptor utilization is a major determinant of cell tropism, host range, and pathogenesis. The bona fide receptor for HNoV is unknown. Recently, we identified CD300lf as a proteinaceous receptor for MNoV. Interestingly, its paralogue CD300ld was also sufficient for MNoV infection in vitro. Here we explored whether CD300lf is the sole physiologic receptor in vivo and whether HNoV ...

Background and aim Malnutrition represents a serious health care threat, as it increases morbidity, mortality and health care cost. The effective screening and treatment with enteral (EN) or parenteral (PN) nutrition are the key elements of the policy called Optimal Nutrition Care for All (ONCA). The study tried to analyze the impact of the state's economy on the implementation of EN and PN to define its role in ONCA.
