Influenza vaccination is recommended for cancer patients; however, adherence is low. We aimed to identify predictive factors for vaccination among cancer patients. We conducted a case-control analysis of a patient cohort in the 2010-2011 influenza season. We included adult cancer patients with solid malignancies undergoing chemotherapy, and haematological patients with active disease. Patients who died between October and November 2010 (N = 43) were excluded from analysis. Cases received the 2011 seasonal ...

Abstract Recent whole genome association studies of prostate, breast, and colorectal cancer have identified susceptibility loci on 8q24. We genotyped three variants associated with prostate cancer (rs10090154, rs13254738, and rs7000448), one associated with both prostate and colorectal cancer (rs6983267), and one associated with breast cancer (rs13281615) in a series of 1,499 breast cancer cases and 1,390 controls. 1,267 (85%) of the cases had two primary breast cancers. Rare inactivating mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, ATM, TP53 and CHEK2 confer relative risks for breast cancer between about 2 and more than 10, but more common variants in these genes are generally considered of little or no clinical significance. Under the polygenic model for breast cancer carriers of multiple low-penetrance alleles are at high risk, but few such alleles have been reliably identified. We analysed 1037 potentially functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in candidate cancer genes ...

Gene therapy is at the forefront of the drive to bring the potential of cure to patients with genetic diseases. Multiple mechanisms of effective and efficient gene therapy delivery (eg, lentiviral, adeno-associated) for transgene expression as well as gene editing have been explored to improve vector and construct attributes and achieve therapeutic success. Recent clinical research has focused on recombinant adeno-associated viral (rAAV) vectors as a preferred method owing to their naturally occurring ...

Tsunami vertical evacuation is an important strategy for enhancing disaster preparedness because it provides an alternative to evacuation inland or to high ground in areas at risk of local tsunami. A large number of tsunami vertical evacuation buildings provided safe refuge in the inundation zone during and immediately after the Great East Japan tsunami on March 11 th 2011. This paper discusses observations of such buildings in connection with themes that arose during semi-structured interviews ...

The effects of selective spinal cord lesions on the motor evoked potential (MEP) in 21 rats were investigated. No significant change in peak amplitude was observed following lesions of the pyramidal tract. There was a significant decrease in peaks 1 and 2 with ventral funiculi lesions. All 4 peaks of the MEP were significantly reduced following lesions of the lateral funiculus. The most marked decrease in peak amplitude followed lateral funiculi lesions that involved the lateral grey of the spinal ...
