A population-based case--control interview study of cancer of the renal pelvis (74 cases and 697 controls) conducted in the Minneapolis--St. Paul metropolitan area showed cigarette smoking to be the major cause of this cancer. The odds ratio (OR) for cigarette smoking was 7.6 among males [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.2-31.5] and 5.8 among females (95% CI: 2.0-17.3), with the OR exceeding 10 for heavy smokers of both sexes. Long-term use of analgesics and several occupational exposures were also found ...

To provide a profile of potential rescuers of cardiac arrest victims, 1,271 randomly selected subjects were interviewed by telephone. Thirty-nine percent had formal instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), 90% knew the emergency telephone number (911), and 5% had performed CPR. Subjects with training were significantly younger than those without (36 vs 48 years old) (P less than .001), and they had a lower incidence of known heart disease in family members (7% vs 15%) (P less than .001). Two-thirds reported that they advocated training for some patients' families, but only 52 per cent of cardiologists and 37 per cent of the others did so for families of at least half of the patients considered at risk. We studied the effectiveness of two refresher methods on skills that did not involve mannequin practice. Sixty-seven Seattle subjects trained one year earlier were pretested and randomly assigned to one of two treatments that covered the technique of one-rescuer CPR: reading a three-page review (n = 33); or viewing a 15-minute videotape (n = 34). Subjects were tested on a recording mannequin immediately after the refresher. Pretest scores were low on almost all skills. After treatment, both groups demonstrated ...

In NOD mice, autoimmune recognition and destruction of pancreatic islet β-cells appear to be independently regulated: all mice develop cellular infiltration of the islets (insulitis), but not all develop diabetes. The destructive potential of the insulitis lesion may depend on the balance between the two CD4+ T-cell subsets, TH1 and TH2, that mediate cellular-cytotoxic and humoral responses, respectively. With a semiquantiative reverse transcriptase-PCR assay, we examined whether the disease process ...

The bronchial washings of 58 patients with benign and neoplastic conditions involving the lungs were evaluated for immunoglobulin content. Levels in the washings from the diseased lung were compared with those from the normal contralateral lung. In 1973, 1 to 30 million asbestos-like fibers per liter of tap water were discovered in Duluth drinking water. Previous studies had linked mesothelioma, lung, and gastrointestinal cancers with occupational exposure to asbestos, so surveillance of cancer morbidity in Duluth was initiated to investigate effects from ingestion of asbestos in drinking water. Gastrointestinal and lung cancer incidence data for 1969–1974 were collected in the same manner as in the Minneapolis-St. Paul component of the ...

Projections of asbestos associated cancer mortality in the United States during the 25 year period 1985-2009 were made based on previously published estimates. These estimates were reviewed for malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, and gastrointestinal cancers. Particular attention was given to the assumptions used in the original derivation of the estimates. For malignant mesothelioma mortality, previous estimates ranged from 15,500 to 300,000. Using recently published data from the Surveillance, ...

Background. Host macrophages are abundant within fetal pig pancreas xenografts undergoing rejection, but their role is unknown. Therefore, we examined the effect of host macrophage depletion on xenograft rejection. Methods. Nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice were given clodronate-loaded liposomes intravenously to deplete macrophages. Controls received phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or PBS-liposomes. General immune status was assessed after 2, 3, and 7 days by (1) fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis ...

Abstract: Safe pesticide handling in a group of Minnesota farmers, aged 40 years and older, was influenced through the use of a multifaceted, countywide educational intervention. Two intervention counties and two control counties were involved in this effort. The intervention consisted of mailed pesticide information to farm households, educational programs on pesticides for county physicians, elementary school training modules on pesticides and the use of safe pesticide handling displays in key ...

Abstract Black prostatic cancer incidence and mortality rates have increased significantly in the past 50 years and, since 1945, these rates have exceeded those in whites with the black/white ratios continuing to increase significantly. A cohort effect for blacks has been noted with a leveling off since 1950 of the age-specific mortality rates for those under 65 years of age, suggesting an “environmental” factor in prostatic cancer etiology. Few urban/rural differences, if any, in mortality rates ...
