This research evaluated the effects of biosolid levels on yield and chemical composition of Mentha piperita L. essential oil. Mint plants were grown in a greenhouse in pots containing the equivalent to 0, 28, 56, and 112 t.ha-1 biosolid. Three evaluations were made at 90, 110, and 120 days after planting (DAP). The oil was extracted from the dry matter of shoots by hydrodistillation, and composition was determined by GC/MS. Oil production was slightly affected by the biosolid, increasing when plants ...

ABSTRACT The present work describes the preparation of polypropylene composites reinforced with cotton fibers, which were obtained from textile waste. The cellulosic fibers were bleached and then chemically modified on the surface using acetylation or silanization methods. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy confirmed the efficiency of both treatments. Results of thermal degradation by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of treated fibers indicated ...

We present ab-initio calculations of seven digital magnetic heterostructures, GaN δ-doped with V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu, forming two-dimensional systems. Only GaN δ-doped with V or Cr present a ferromagnetic ground state with high Curie temperatures. For both, to better describe the electronic properties, we used the GGA-1/2 approach. The ground state of GaN/Cr resulted in a two dimensional half-metal, with 100% spin polarization. For GaN/V, we obtained an insulating state: integer magnetic ...

Among all magnetic semiconductors, GaMnAs seems to be the most important one. In this work, we present accurate first-principles calculations of GaMnAs within the GGA-1/2 approach: We concentrate our efforts in obtaining the position of the peak of Mn-d levels in the valence band and also the majority spin band gap. For the position of the Mn-d peak, we find a value of 3.3 eV below the Fermi level, in good agreement with the most recent experimental results of 3.5 and 3.7 eV. An analytical expression ...

We present parameter-free calculations of electronic properties of InGaN, InAlN, and AlGaN alloys. The calculations are based on a generalized quasichemical approach, to account for disorder and composition effects, and first-principles calculations within the density functional theory with the LDA-1/2 approach, to accurately determine the band gaps. We provide precise results for AlGaN, InGaN, and AlInN band gaps for the entire range of compositions, and their respective bowing parameters.

Nematophagous fungi are the most studied nematode-antagonistic organisms, and are efficient in controlling parasitic nematodes population on host. These fungi are prevalent in soil and the rhizosphere pathogens, saprophytes, or endophytes. From a biochemical point of view, enzymes play a fundamental role in the fungus-parasite interactive process. Based on the chemical structure of these different potential targets for catalytic action, enzymes produced by nematophagous fungi such as proteases, ...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the CROPGRO-Dry bean model for simulating dry bean yield. The model’s genetic coefficients were calibrated based on the cultivars ‘Pérola’, ‘Ouro Negro’ and ‘Ouro Vermelho’ in Viçosa, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The coefficients were adjusted based on two experiments that were performed in 2003 with irrigated and nonirrigated water regimes. An additional experiment with irrigation was conducted in 2004. After calibration, the model simulated the bean yield for ...

The diluted magnetic semiconductors are promising materials for spintronic applications. Usually one intents to find the ferromagnetic state but recently the antiferromagnetism (AFM) was proposed to have some advantages. In this work, we verify the possibility to obtain spin polarization with an AFM state. In particular, we studied GaN 5% double doped with two different transition metals atoms (Mn and Co or Cr and Ni), forming the ${\text{Mn}}_{x}{\text{Co}}_{0.056\ensuremath{-}x}{\text{Ga}}_{0.944}\ ...

Recently approved by the FDA and European Medicines Agency, CAR-T cell therapy is a new treatment option for B-cell malignancies. Currently, CAR-T cells are manufactured in centralized facilities and face bottlenecks like complex scaling up, high costs, and logistic operations. These difficulties are mainly related to the use of viral vectors and the requirement to expand CAR-T cells to reach the therapeutic dose. In this paper, by using Sleeping Beauty-mediated genetic modification delivered by ...

Snakebite envenoming (SBE) is a neglected tropical disease with significant global morbidity and mortality. Even when antivenom is available in low-resource areas, health workers do not receive adequate training to manage SBEs. A panel of expert judges with academic and/or technical expertise in SBE management performed content validation. The content validity index (CVI) score was 90% for ...

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius, 1889) is a major pest species in soybean, leading to severe economic losses on this crop due to the difficulties involved on its management. Previously restricted to the Middle-west and Southeast regions of Brazil, whitefly infestations have steadily increased in the Southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, the third biggest soybean growing region of the country. Control failures and scarcity of updated information have led Brazilian soybean growers to raise excessively ...

The rapidly expanding use of electronic products has led to the generation of very large quantities of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). This waste essentially consists of polymeric, ceramic, and metallic materials, with the metal fraction including noble and base metals, which may be toxic. It is therefore important to recycle printed circuit boards (PCBs) for both economic and environmental reasons, especially since this solid waste contains noble metals (gold and silver). Given this ...

At the same time that two-dimensional (2D) systems open possibilities for new physics and applications, they present a higher challenge for electronic structure calculations, especially concerning excitations. We described the synthesis of a new congener series of 1,2,3-triazolyl-4-oxoquinolines and evaluated their ability to inhibit oseltamivir (OST)-resistant influenza strains. Oxoquinoline derivative 1i was the most potent compound within this series, inhibiting 94% of wild-type (WT) influenza neuraminidase (NA) activity. Compound 1i inhibited influenza virus replication with an EC50 of 0.2 μM with less cytotoxicity than OST, and also inhibited different OST-resistant NAs. These results suggest that 1, ...

Epithelial cells mostly orient the spindle along the plane of the epithelium (planar orientation) for mitosis to produce two identical daughter cells. The correct orientation of the spindle relies on the interaction between cortical polarity components and astral microtubules. Recent studies in mammalian tissue culture cells suggest that the apically localised atypical protein kinase C (aPKC) is important for the planar orientation of the mitotic spindle in dividing epithelial cells. Yet, in chicken ...

Malaria is a disease that requires new drugs not only to fight Plasmodium but also to reduce symptoms of infection such as fever and inflammation. A series of 21 hybrid compounds were designed from chloroquine (CQ) and primaquine (PQ) linked to the pharmacophoric group present in phenylacetic anti-inflammatory drugs. These compounds were designed to have dual activity: namely, to be capable of killing Plasmodium and still act on the inflammatory process caused by malaria infection. The compounds were ...

For manganese mononitride (MnN), the total energy versus lattice constant is obtained using the spin density functional theory. Instead of the tetragonally distorted NaCl structure, we study the zinc blende and wurtzite structures in which AlN, GaN, and InN crystallize. The ground state with nonmagnetic, antiferromagnetic (AFM), or ferromagnetic (FM) arrangement of spins depends on the polymorph of MnN and on the lattice constant. At equilibrium lattice constants, in zinc blende it is AFM in [100] direction, ...
