A new Schiff-base sensor containing fluorene was synthesized and investigated for determination of metal ions in dimethylsulfoxide solutions. Fluorescence was quenched upon coordination, showing selectivity for Cu(II) over Mn(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), Pd(II), Zn(II), Ca(II), Hg(II), Na(I) and K(I) in a concentration range of 1.00 to 10.0 × 10‐7 mol L‐1. Good results were observed for sensor 1 derived from 2‐formylpiridine. Benesi‐Hilderbrand formalism indicates that the most abundant species formed have ...

Asparaginases are the cornerstone therapy of many successful combination regimens for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common malignancy in children and adolescents. The aim of this work was to produce recombinant Erwinia carotovora L-asparaginase II in Escherichia coli fed-batch cultures. Using a robust fed-batch technique with pre-determined exponential feeding rates, our bioreactor culture system yielded 30.7 grams of dry cell weight and 0.9 grams of soluble rErAII ...

The main discoveries and advances in the development of industrial processes for the most commercially used phosphate fertilizers in the world (single superphosphate, triple superphosphate, monoammonium phosphate, and diammonium phosphate) occurred from 1830 to 1970, followed by improvements and investments to expand worldwide production capacity. A main opportunity now is aggregating new technologies to conventional phosphate fertilizers so they may become even more efficient in supplying P to plants, ...

Abstract The paradigm of isolation in southern refugia during glacial periods followed by expansions during interglacials, producing limited genetic differentiation in northern areas, dominates European phylogeography. However, the existence of complex structured populations in formerly glaciated areas, and islands connected to mainland areas during glacial maxima, call for alternative explanations. We reconstructed the mtDNA phylogeography of the widespread Polyommatus Icarus butterfly with an ...

Comprehensive electrochemical and operando Raman studies are performed to investigate the electrochemical stability window (ESW) of supercapacitors filled with normal (salt-in-water) and highly concentrated (water-in-salt, WiSE) electrolytes. Impedance and chronoamperometric experiments are employed and combined with cyclic voltammetry to correctly define the ESW for a WiSE-based device. The total absence of water-splitting resulted in phase angles close to -90° in the impedance data. It is verified ...

This work brings the promise of MCM-41 mesoporous silica as a vehicle for red propolis for the development of controlled release drugs and delivery to a specific target site. The synthesis of MCM-41 by the sol–gel method with a pore size of approximately 3.6 nm and the incorporation of red propolis extract by the physical adsorption method in ethanolic medium were easily accomplished with around 15% encapsulation. MCM-41 and MCM-41 with red propolis (MCM-41/Pr) were characterized by Fourier transform ...

Abstract This work reports a detailed study of the double‐resonance (DR) Raman bands of single‐layer MoS 2 as a function of temperature, using many different laser energies in the region of the excitonic transitions and at different temperatures between 80 and 300 K. Our measurements show that the DR bands are strongly affected by temperature and the results are explained in terms of the temperature dependence of both the phonon wavenumber and the excitonic energy. In order to distinguish these two ...

We report an electrode material for supercapacitors composed of nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles supported onto radially oriented multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using a stainless-steel fine-mesh as the support (AISI:CNT-NiO). CNT scaffolds showed a turbostratic multi-walled structure with an interplanar spacing of 0.32 ± 0.02 nm and a diameter of ∼20–100 nm. NiO nanoparticles exhibited a diameter of ∼2–7 nm. X-ray data confirmed the presence of NiO in the scaffold. A large pseudocapacitive voltage ...

Metastable β-type Ti alloys with non-toxic addition elements such as Mo, Zr, Sn, Ta and Nb were developed as an alternative to the widely used Ti-6Al-4V alloy for biomedical applications. These alloys possess enhanced biocompatibility and reduced elastic modulus in comparison with Ti-6Al-4V.Moreover, for orthopedic implants, low Young's modulus is required in order to avoid the stress shielding phenomenon. This study analyzes the microstructure and mechanical properties of a new Ti-12Mo-8Nb alloy ...

Background The global burden of rheumatic heart disease is nearly 33 million people. Telemedicine, using cloud-server technology, provides an ideal solution for sharing images performed by non-physicians with cardiologists who are experts in rheumatic heart disease. Objective We describe our experience in using telemedicine to support a large rheumatic heart disease outreach screening programme in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Methods The Programa de Rastreamento da Valvopatia Reumática (PROVAR) ...

C-type lectin DC-SIGN receptor, encoded by CD209, plays a key role in the infection of dendritic cells by dengue virus (DENV). Because the -336A/G SNP (rs4804803) polymorphism in the promoter of CD209 modulates DC-SIGN expression, we investigated the putative association of this polymorphism with DENV infection and its pathogenesis. A control sample of 72 individuals, rigorously selected through a clinical investigation for absence of past dengue fever (DF) was compared to a sample of 168 patients (156 ...

Oysters are filter feeders able to ingest particles in suspension that may carry pathogenic microorganisms. In this respect, the consumption of raw oysters can cause foodborne diseases in humans. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the microbiological quality of Crassostrea gigas oysters cultivated and commercialized in the coastal region of Florianópolis, SC, Brazil. The study comprised counts of coliforms at 35ºC and at 45ºC, Escherichia coli and coagulase-positive staphylococci, and ...

2-Mercapto- and 4-mercaptopyridine (2- and 4MPy) react with the [Fe(CN)(5)(H(2)O)](3-) complex, forming the S-coordinated [Fe(CN)(5)(2MPy)](3-) and the N-coordinated [Fe(CN)(5)(4MPy)](3-) complexes. The rates of formation and dissociation of the [Fe(II)(CN)(5)(2MPy)](3-) complex were determined as k(f) = 294 dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1) and k(d) = 0.019 s(-1) by means of stopped-flow technique. The equilibrium constants for the iron(II) and -(III) species were calculated as K(f)(II) = 1.5 x 10(4) mol(-1) dm(3) and K( ...

A thorough stability analysis of submerged pipeline dynamics has been performed. The problem of current-induced vibrations in a free spanning pipeline was analyzed using both linear and non-linear methodologies. While most investigations dedicated to the analysis of this type of problem use either approximate analytical methods or traditional numerical methods, two alternative approaches are presented: Linear Stability Analysis (LSA) and the Generalized Integral Transform Technique (GITT). Absorption spectra are indicative of biological sample chemical composition and can be used as a basis for the construction of descriptive and predictive models for biotechnological screening or assays. In marine algae, chemical composition can vary due to species-specific differences in biochemistry, as well as intra-specific responses to unique environmental variables. Different indices (UVCi, UVB + Ai and PARi) were proposed and calculated to evaluate how photoprotective compounds vary in 18 species ...

Seismic inversion is an established approach to model the geophysical characteristics of oil and gas reservoirs, being one of the basis of the decision making process in the oil&gas exploration industry. However, the required accuracy levels can only be attained by dealing and processing significant amounts of data, often leading to consequently long execution times. To overcome this issue and to allow the development of larger and higher resolution elastic models of the subsurface, a novel parallelization ...
