One hundred neurologically healthy adults were tested for their pointing (choosing one of four or six line drawings as the match to an auditorily presented linguistic stimulus), naming (from line drawings), and repetition abilities. All subjects were unilingual adult right-handers. Fifty-seven subjects were totally unschooled illiterates and 43 were fluent readers. Statistically significant differences were found to exist between the scores of the illiterate and literate subpopulations across all ...

The hypothesis that awareness of phonemic segments influences the way in which speech is perceived was examined. Illiterate adults, who generally lack awareness of segments, were compared with literates, who are aware of the segmental structure of speech, on the recognition of words presented dichotically. A group of people who learned to read and write but who do it only occasionally was also tested. The results indicated much better performance in literates than in illiterates or semiliterates. ...

We examined the hypothesis that formal education and literacy impact the richness and precision of semantic knowledge but not the organization of semantic categories and basic mechanisms of access to them. In Experiment 1, adults of varying levels of formal education were presented with semantic fluency tests and a superordinate naming task. Experiment 2 examined the impact of reading proficiency on adults of varying degrees of literacy. They were presented with simple semantic, alternating semantic ...

Introduction With obesity reaching pandemic proportions, its detrimental influence on many health-related conditions has recently become a focus of research. Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is one of several disorders associated with obesity. Materials and methods This study was designed to identify MSK pain in individuals with severe obesity, recruited from a specialized obesity clinic, and to evaluate the correlation between the MSK symptoms and some individual criteria. Results In 466 patients (342 ...

I propose in this article, based on recent findings from neuroscience, demystifying the global method of learning how to read, which still boasts many supporters in Brazil, despite its official condemnation in countries like France. I trace a brief history of its emergence and unfolding, exemplifying the use in Brazil with some booklets. I present, then, empirical evidence from neuroscience about the biological constraints imposed to the retina for capturing more than twelve characters of the printed ...

The main purpose of this paper is to discuss an approach to the phonic method of learning-teaching early literacy development, namely that the visual neurons must be recycled to recognize the small differences among pertinent letter features. In addition to the challenge of segmenting the speech chain and the syllable for learning the alphabetic principles, neuroscience has demonstrated another major challenge: neurons in mammals are programmed to process visual signals symmetrically. In order to ...

I examine how neuroscience contributes to the understanding of the processes involved in emergent literacy and reading and to the understandind of recycling of neurons in the left ventral occipitotemporal region for the recognition of invariant features that distinguish the letters between them, and for the recognition of letters and graphemes associated with phonemes with the function of distinguishing meanings. In this region there are projections for areas that process verbal language and meaning: ...

In the 2016 National Early Literacy Assessment (ANA) (INEP, 2017), 2,160,601 students from Brazilian public schools were evaluated at the end of the 3rd year of the Early Literacy Cycle, in reading and writing, among which only 12.99% reached the aimed level (4) in reading and only 8.28% reached the aimed level (5) in writing. However, in Lagarto city (Sergipe State), which, according to the aforementioned evaluation, had ranked last in Brazil, with only 3.02% of students at the aimed level in reading, ...

We discuss the pre-requisite of phonological awareness to learn alphabetic systems and the tests to measuring it. In the speech chain, neither the segments nor words are separated in a discrete way. In theprinted system, letters are discrete unitsand words are separated by blanks.Children facing the task of decoding letters have to destroy their intuitive perception of that chain. There are threemain approaches on the subject: for the first, phonological awareness is a pre-requisite for reading; ...

Discutem-se problemas confrontados pelas teorias que tentam explicar a referência, em particular, a indeterminação. Contudo, categorias ontológicas e processos psicolingüísticos como o uso das pistas extra-lingüísticas e contextuais, ou do conhecimento compartilhado, permitem recuperar os sentidos específicos e infinitos de uma palavra e seus referentes. Os efeitos do letramento e da escolaridade sobre a estruturação e a evocação do significado são demonstrados empiricamente pelos dados de Monteiro, ...

We present an automatic morphological analyzer of Portuguese verbs, and discuss its performance in relation to its efficiency and the quality of the results, in dealing with the thematic vowel. We also show the principles that guided its development and how we translated most of the grammatical rules we turned into algorithms. The discussion focuses on the ambiguities caused by thematic vowel allomorphs, by the phenomenon called vowel harmony, and on the resolution of them. The creation of an automatic ...

This study reviews recent data on functional illiteracy and advances on neuroscience about the reading process. alarming figures on functional illiteracy will be presented with examples of UK and brazil. Empirical evidences brought by neuroscience prove the neuropsychological basis constructs, namely invariance already claimed by modern linguistics. however, emphasis will be given to the psychological reality of letters’ feature invariance, demonstrated by various experiments which had been recently ...
