Contents Ovarian teratomas are occasionally reported in dogs; the rarest type is the monophasic teratoma, composed of tissues originating from only one germ layer. Canine endometrial adenocarcinomas are also rare in dogs and mainly affect geriatric females. This report describes the case of co‐existing ovarian teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a 10‐year‐old nulliparous female Boxer presented with lethargy, anorexia and purulent vaginal discharge. Abdominal ultrasonography evidenced pyometra ...

It is crucial to gain better insights into how psychosocial processes can limit the power of the political/legislative sphere for promoting social change through new laws. One form of accomplishing this is by illuminating the arguments and the content and value of social representations at play in cases in which the public sphere succeeds in contesting new laws. In this article, we explore a case of successful resistance to new ecological laws in a Portuguese Natura site. The laws, restricting recreational ...

The present study was undertaken to determine whether or not signet ring cell (diffuse, isolated cell) gastric carcinomas display a specific profile at the ultrastructural, morphometric, and DNA cytometric levels. Thirty-two cases of gastric carcinoma and 8 cases of peptic ulcer (control group) were studied with electron microscopy, morphometry, flow cytometry, and image cytometry. Despite the ultrastructural cellular heterogeneity of signet ring cell carcinomas, the neoplastic cells display fairly ...

Background/Aims: The putative influence of tumor location on the biologic behavior of gastric carcinomas remains controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate if carcinomas arising in the three types of gastric mucosa (cardia, fundus/body and antrum) have different clinical and pathologic profiles and carry a different prognosis. Methods: Three hundred and two patients with cardia or gastric carcinoma resected between 1984 and 1996 were retrospectively studied. ...

The membrane-bound MUC1 mucin is expressed in normal mucosas and the aberrant expression of its under-glycosylated forms has been reported in carcinomas from different sites. Several studies have provided conflicting evidence regarding the relationship between MUC1 expression and outcome in cancer patients. In this study, we investigated the immunohistochemical expression of MUC1 epitopes, using 2 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs): HMFG1, which reacts with the fully glycosylated MUC1, was studied in 73 ...

Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is an autosomal dominant cancer susceptibility syndrome characterized by early-onset diffuse gastric cancer (DGC) and lobular breast cancer. E-cadherin (CDH1) heterozygous germline mutations and deletions are found in 40% of families. Independent of CDH1 alterations, most HDGC tumours display mislocalized or absent E-cadherin immunoexpression, therefore undetected defects at the CDH1 locus may still be involved. We aimed at determining whether CDH1 mutation- ...

Aims: Mutations in the gene coding for p53 protein are among the most frequent genetic alterations observed in human cancers. The relevance and biological significance of p53 expression in gastric carcinoma are far from being fully established. The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of p53 detected by immunohistochemistry in the clinicopathological behaviour of a series of gastric carcinoma cases. Methods and results: Samples from 163 patients treated by gastric resection for gastric ...

Taste perception is crucial in monitoring food intake and, hence, is thought to play a significant role in human evolution. To gain insights into possible adaptive signatures in genes encoding bitter, sweet, and umami taste receptors, we surveyed the available sequence variation data from the 1000 Genomes Project Phase 3 for TAS1R (TAS1R1-3) and TAS2R (TAS2R16 and TAS2R38) families. Our study demonstrated that genes from these two families have experienced contrasting evolutionary histories: While ...

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is an autosomal co-dominant disease characterised by low serum levels of this molecule. Its epidemiology remains unknown in many countries, mainly due to its underdiagnosed state and lack of patients' registries. We aim to evaluate and characterise a sample of Portuguese individuals tested for AATD, between 2006 and 2015, based on a retrospective analysis from the database of a laboratory offering AATD genetic diagnosis service. 1684 individuals were considered, ...

Lung cancer configures as one of the deadliest types of cancer. The future implementation of early screening methods such as exhaled breath condensate analysis and low dose computed tomography (CT) as an alternative to current chest imaging based screening will lead to an increased burden on bronchoscopy units. Acellular bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) proteomics can partially separate lung cancer from non-lung cancer patients based on principal component analysis and multivariate analysis. Furthermore, the variance in the proteomics data sets is correlated mainly with lung cancer status and, to a lesser extent, smoking status and gender. Despite these advances BAL small and large extracellular vehicles (EVs) proteomes reveal aberrant protein expression in paracrine signaling mechanisms in cancer initiation ...

MUC1 like most mucin genes shows extensive length polymorphism in the central core region. In a previous study it was shown that individuals with small MUC1 alleles/genotypes have an increased risk for development of gastric carcinoma. Our aim was to see if MUC1 gene polymorphism was involved in susceptibility for the development of conditions that precede gastric carcinoma: chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and intestinal metaplasia (IM). We evaluated MUC1 polymorphism in a population of 174 individuals ...

The HER-2/neu gene or c-erb B-2, localized on chromosome 17q, belongs to a family of tyrosine kinase receptors and shares extensive homology with the epidermal growth factor receptor. c-erb B-2 gene amplification and protein overexpression have been reported in several human cancers. Mutations in recently identified genes on chromosomes 2 and 3 seem to be responsible for repair errors (RER+) throughout the genome. This novel genetic mechanism was first reported in hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer syndrome and in cancers that are characteristic of this syndrome, such as carcinomas of the right colon, stomach and endometrium. We investigated the frequency of RER+ phenotype in a series of 34 sporadic gastric carcinomas, in an attempt to see if the RER+ cases displayed ...

Abstract The lung is inhabited by a diverse microbiome that originates from the oropharynx by a mechanism of micro-aspiration. Its bacterial biomass is usually low; however, this condition shifts in lung cancer (LC), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease (ILD). Wasting disease in small ruminants is frequently detected at slaughterhouses. The wasting disorder is manifested by the deterioration of the nutritional and physiological state of the animal indicated by thinness, emaciation, and cachexia. Evidence of emaciation and cachexia, alone, are pathological conditions leading to carcass condemnation during an inspection. Several diseases are associated with a wasting condition, including scrapie, pseudotuberculosis, tuberculosis, paratuberculosis, Maedi ...

Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases are a fatal group of infectious, inherited and spontaneous neurodegenerative diseases affecting human and animals. They are caused by the conversion of cellular prion protein (PrPC) into a misfolded pathological isoform (PrPSc or prion- proteinaceous infectious particle) that self-propagates by conformational conversion of PrPC. Yet by an unknown mechanism, PrPC can fold into different PrPSc conformers that may result in different prion ...
