MARIA TERESA HORTA AND LEONOR DE ALMEIDA PORTUGAL: FROM THE GRAIN OF LIGHT TO THE GRAIN OF POMEGRANATE… The art of fitting stories into other stories is as old as human creativity itself. A seductive technique as it allows the reader to jump from one chess literary piece to another, without losing the thread. Maria Teresa Horta assembles in The lights of Leonor (2011) a mosaic of real/imaginary situations, leading the reader into the most secret existential labyrinths of Marquise of Alorna, her ...

Microalgae are photosynthetic micro-organisms of great importance, since they are capable of synthesizing high value biocompounds. Fatty acids of microalgae can be produced both by autotrophic and heterotrophic pathways, and are synthesized in the chloroplast. The aim of this study is to perform a brief review of the polyunsaturated fatty acids produced by microalgae, emphasizing the influence of culture conditions, synthesis and metabolism for the production of fatty acids. This review discusses ...

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by an intracellular protozoan that belongs to the genus Leishmania and is transmitted by a phlebotomine sandfly. In Southwest Europe, including Portugal, cutaneous leishmaniasis is considered a rare disease of unknown or underestimated prevalence. Leishmania infantum is the only species identified as responsible for the autochthonous cases. We report the case of a 66-year-old man with an erythematous, painless plaque on the mid face region, accompanied ...

The environmental release of antimicrobial pharmaceuticals is an imminent threat due to ecological impacts and microbial resistance phenomena. The recent COVID-19 outbreak will likely lead to greater loads of antimicrobials in the environment. Thus, identifying the most used antimicrobials likely to pose environmental risks would be valuable. For that, the ambulatory and hospital consumption patterns of antimicrobials in Portugal during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021) were compared with those of ...

Research studies on early childhood intervention (ECI) in Portugal are diffuse regarding both program components and the geographical area under scrutiny. Since the 1990s, a growing body of knowledge and evidence in ECI is being gathered, based on postgraduate teaching, in-service training, and research. This article draws on the systems theory perspective outlined in the Developmental Systems Approach to Early Intervention (M. J. Guralnick, 2001, 2005a, 2011) to (a) depict paradigmatic shifts and ...

During the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic, Portugal was the third most affected country. As a result of a successful national eradication plan, the number of BSE affected animals has been progressively declining in Portugal with no cases identified in 2013. However, within the scope of this active surveillance scheme, we have identified the first H-type BSE case born after the introduction of the reinforced ban in fallen stock. Here, we report the phenotypic features of this case ...

Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a frequently misdiagnosed type of diabetes, which is characterized by early onset, autosomal dominant inheritance, and absence of insulin dependence. The most frequent subtypes are due to mutations of the GCK (MODY 2), HNF1A (MODY 3), and HNF4A (MODY 1) genes. We undertook the first multicenter genetic study of MODY in the Portuguese population. The GCK, HNF1A, and HNF4A genes were sequenced in 46 unrelated patients that had at least two of the three classical ...
