본 연구는 소설『레 미제라블』이 매체 전환을 통해 뮤지컬 〈레 미제라블〉의 과정을 거칠 때 일어나는 특성에 관한 연구이다. 연구 결과 뮤지컬 〈레 미제라블〉 작품이 가지는 매체 전환의 특성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 소설에서 다루고 있는 내용을 삭제, 축소, 변형, 추가라는 각색의 과정을 거치면서 대본 작업이 이뤄진다. 둘째, 텍스트의 넘버 작업을 통해 청각적인 매체로 전환이 이뤄진다. 셋째, 소설 텍스트를 기반하고 있는 가사에 충실한 넘버를 통해 대사 전달이 일어난다. 넷째, 소설에 등장하는 인물들의 특징은 넘버 안에서 음악적 기법 등을 활용하여 인물의 내면 심리를 표현하고 있다. 이러한 과정을 통해 텍스트 형식의 소설은 무대위에 시청각의 확대를 가져오는 것임을 알 수 있다. 다만 연구 결과에서 보여지는 요소들이 모든 매체 전환 작품의 특징이라고 할 수는 없기에 향후 재창조 되어진 작품들의 연구를 통해 매체 전환 작품들의 공통점에 대한 고찰을 이어나가고자 한다.
