Abstract. The importance of deep soil-regolith through flow in a small (3.4 km2) ephemeral catchment in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia was investigated by detailed hydrochemical analysis of soil water and stream flow during autumn and early winter rains. In this Mediterranean climate with strong summer moisture deficits, several significant rainfalls are required to generate soil through flow and stream flow [in ephemeral streams]. During autumn 2007, a large (127 mm) drought-breaking rain occurred ...

Metallothionein‐3 (MT‐3) is a brain‐specific MT, which is downregulated in Alzheimer's disease. The N‐terminal region of CdMT‐3 is highly dynamic and has escaped structural characterization by nuclear magnetic resonance. We have used electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to probe conformational states of cadmium‐ and zinc‐substituted metalloforms of MT‐3 and can demonstrate that the N‐terminal β‐domain of MT‐3 filled with Cd 2+ has a more open conformation than that filled with Zn 2+ . The results ...

Zinc metabolism in the cells is largely regulated by ubiquitous small proteins, metallothioneins (MT). Metallothionein-3 is specifically expressed in the brain and is down regulated in Alzheimer's disease. We demonstrate by mass spectrometry that MT-3, in contrast to common MTs, binds Zn2+ and Cd2+ in a noncooperative manner and can also bind higher stoichiometries of metals than seven. MT-3 reconstituted with seven metals exists in a dynamic equilibrium of different metalloforms, where the prevalent ...

Global biogeochemical cycles have, as a central component, estimates of physical and chemical erosion rates. These erosion rates are becoming better quantified by the development of a global database of cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be (CRN) analyses of soil, sediment, and outcrops. Here we report the denudation rates for two small catchments (~ 0.9 km2) in the Mt. Lofty Ranges of South Australia as determined from 10Be concentrations from quartz sand from the following landscape elements: 1) dissected ...

Summary This article explains the juridical-religious conception behind Lesia Ukrainka’s dramatic poem Martian, the Lawyer (1911), which depicts the life of early Christians under Roman law in the third century. For the protagonist Martian, who is a lawyer and Christian, early Christianity and the Roman law fuse into one ideology, which implies the juridical elements codified in early Christianity, as well as a belief in law as the incarnation of the idea of truth and justice. Therefore, there are ...

Purpose: to determine the role of ticks in existence of tularemia natural foci, including expansion of their boundaries and emergence of new enzootic areas. Methods & Materials: During 2013-2017, 34,170 samples of ticks were collected by flagging and dragging; identified and tested using IHA and PCR methods Results: The most permanent focus of tularemia with the tendency of geographical distribution in Lviv Oblast is the Bystrytsia river floodplain near Carpathian region. ObjectiveTo estimate effectiveness of PCR method for epidemiology surveillance for leptospirosis in Lviv Oblast and compare it with microscopic agglutination test (MAT).IntroductionLeptospirosis is one of the most important zoonotic diseases based on the severity of the clinical course, frequency of fatal outcome and long-term clinical consequences. In Ukraine, leptospirosis is one of the most widespread natural-focal infectious diseases. Based on data of the Public Health Center of the Ministry ...

Objective: Study the advantages of using the PCR method for monitoring of natural foci within the EDP surveillance system.Introduction: Natural foci of especially dangerous pathogens (EDP) (tularemia, leptospirosis, anthrax, tick-borne infections) are known in Lviv oblast for more than 50 years. An integral part of the epidemiological surveillance of these infections is the monitoring of environmental objects that can detect the circulation of pathogens in natural biotopes. Identification and studying ...

The atypical location of the adenoma of the parathyroid gland occurs not frequently. The most common place of the ectopia is the thymus. Many diagnostic methods have to be used to establish the point of the abnormal locality of the parathyroid gland adenoma.Among them are USG, CT, MRI and technetium 99m scan.We reported on the young woman with the unusual clinical case -the two parathyroid gland adenomas, one of which was located in thymus. The second adenoma was found only after primary surgical elimination ...

The large submarine Naturaliste Plateau (NP), lying off the southwestern tip of Australia, is a poorly known part of Australia’s offshore jurisdiction. Only two dredges, one from the northern margin and one from the southern margin, have recovered rocks from this feature, which is approximately the size of Tasmania. Based on the presence of distinctive 130 m.y. old basalts at Bunbury, on the adjacent coast of Western Australia, it has been claimed that the NP may form the easternmost part of the ...
