Chronic otitis media is hystopathologycaly defined as the presence of irreversible inflammatory tissue changes in the middle ear. Ossicular lesions represent the most prevalent change. to correlate the degree of ossicular chain changes seen during surgery with the inflammatory histological degree and the thickness of the cholesteatoma perimatrix. Cross-sectional study. Seventy-one descriptions of surgeries done in patients submitted to tympanomastoydectomy were reviewed. Cholesteatoma were collected ...

Abstract Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze the reliability and validity of the Brazilian–Portuguese version of the Defensive Style Questionnaire (DSQ). Participants were evaluated by clinical interview and the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Reliability was assessed by factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha. The 3-factor model's replication was tested using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Controls were reevaluated after 4 months to assess test–retest reliability. Subsamples ...

Abstract Context Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have common eating problems, including food refusal, dietary restrictions, and behavioral problems during eating. Objective The aim of this systematic review was to find more clear evidence on the relationship between food selectivity or food neophobia (FN) and ASD in children up to age 14 years. The PECO-based question was: Are food selectivity and FN behaviors more prevalent in children with ASD than in children with neurotypical development ( ...

Chronic otitis media is generally associated with some degree of hearing loss, which is often the patient's chief complaint. This hearing loss is usually conductive, resulting from tympanic membrane rupture and/or changes in the ossicular chain due to fixation or erosion caused by the chronic inflammatory process. When cholesteatoma or granulation tissue is present in the middle ear cleft, the degree of ossicular destruction is even greater. An issue that has recently gained attention is additional ...

For seven weeks, senile rats were submitted to systemic treatment with vehicle (VEH and VEH-PRP) or 100 μg/Kg of zoledronate (ZOL and ZOL-PRP) every three days. After three weeks, the first lower molar was extracted. VEH-PRP and ZOL-PRP received PRP at the tooth extraction ...

People deprived of liberty in prisons are at higher risk of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) due to their increased exposure through intravenous drug use, unprotected sexual activity, tattooing in prison and blood exposure in fights and rebellions. Yet, the contribution of intramural HIV transmission to the epidemic is scarcely known, especially in low- and middle-income settings. In this study, we surveyed 1,667 inmates incarcerated at Presídio Central de Porto Alegre, located ...

The signal transmission in the nervous system operates through a sensitive balance between excitatory (E) inputs and inhibitory (I) responses. Imbalances in this system contribute to the development of pathologies such as seizures. In Caenorhabditis elegans, the locomotor circuit operates via the coordinated activity of cholinergic excitatory (E) and GABAergic inhibitory (I) transmission. Changes in E/I inputs can cause uncontrolled electrical discharges, mimicking the physiology of seizures. Molecules ...
