Light microscopic immunocytochemistry was used to identify Paneth cells by their lysozyme content and to detect immunoglobulin antigens within a subpopulation of these cells. Antisera specific for the heavy chains of rat or human immunoglobulin A and for immunoglobulin light chain antigens produced specific staining of rat Paneth cells. The distribution of immunoglobulin staining varied between adjacent Paneth cells in the same crypt and between Paneth cells in adjacent crypts, as well as between ...

A leading cause of human birth defects is the incomplete fusion of tissues, often manifested in the palate, heart, or neural tube. To investigate the molecular control of tissue fusion, embryonic dorsal closure and pupal thorax closure in Drosophila are useful experimental models. We find that Pvr mutants have defects in dorsal midline closure with incomplete amnioserosa internalization and epidermal zippering, as well as cardia bifida. These defects are relatively mild in comparison to those seen ...

An ester enolate rearrangement/silicon mediated fragmentation cascade was used to convert 7 and 8 into the alcohol 9. The alcohol 9 was converted into the allylic alcohol 12 and then to the ester 14. A further ester enolate rearrangement furnished the stereochemical identity of galbonolide B 1. Base mediated macrocyclization of the acetate ester 16 followed by base mediated alkylation and acetal deprotection gave galbonolide B 1.

Infrared detectors consisting of photovoltaic CdHgTe diode arrays coupled to silicon multiplexing circuitry have been demonstrated in formats up to 64 x 64. In the long and intermediate wavelength bands respectively, progress is reported on 64 x 64 co-ordinate addressed hybrids, and on 64 x 64 CCD hybrids. Recent developments in hybrid technology and array assessment have demonstrated the feasibility for much larger arrays. Imaging studies have shown that NETDs of less than 0.05K are currently being ...

The construction of the fourteen membered ring present in galbonolide B 1 is reported. The 10,11-diene system present in the southern portion of 1 has been constructed using an ester enolate rearrangement/silicon mediated fragmentation cascade, whilst the macrocycle has been synthesised following a Johnson rearrangement/mercury assisted ring closure protocol.

A biomonitoring method for the determination of Pb, Cd, and Hg at background levels in whole blood by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry is described. While this method was optimized for assessing Pb, Cd and Hg at environmental levels, it also proved suitable for assessing concentrations associated with occupational exposure. The method requires as little as 200 μl of blood that is diluted 1 + 49 for direct analysis in the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer. Method performance ...

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed Standard Reference Material (SRM) 955c, a new caprine-based, four-level blood standard with certified blood lead levels (BLLs) ranging from 0.4 µg/dL (0.02 µmol/L) Pb to 45 µg/dL (2.2 µmol/L) Pb. Certified values are based on ID-ICP-MS. Strict control and accurate measurement of the procedure blank were necessary to minimize uncertainty for the lowest level (Level 1) and obtain a relative expanded uncertainty (k = 2) of 2.6%. (1) Measurements were made to determine the balance between photosynthesis, animal intake and the losses of matter in swards maintained by 'lenient' continuous grazing by sheep at a Leaf (lamina) Area Index of 3.0 and by 'hard' continuous grazing at an LAI of 1.0. (2) Gross photosynthetic uptake was greater in the leniently-grazed sward than in the hard-grazed sward. In both swards, a similar proportion of photosynthetic uptake was lost in respiration or by partition to non-harvestable parts. Thus, ...

High-Speed GaAs Schottky barrier photodiodes have been fabricated and characterized. These detectors have 3-dB bandwidths of 20 GHz and quantum efficiencies as high as 70%. The response of the detectors to light modulated at 1–18 GHz has been directly measured. Microwave modulated optical signals were obtained by using a LiNbO3 traveling wave modulator and by heterodyning two laser diodes.

A facile and transition-metal-free ring expansion of the cyclobutanol moiety to 4-tetralones fused to heteroaromatic systems is described. The oxidative ring expansion proceeds rapidly and regioselectively through mediation by N-bromosuccinimide and acetonitrile in satisfactory to good yields. The preparation of precursors and the ring expansion have proven to be scalable and are straightforward to carry out.

The number of developed methodologies for the ring expansion of cyclobutanol rings to five, six and seven-membered rings has increased significantly over the last six years. In this timeframe, the semipinacol rearrangement of vinyl-group containing cyclobutanols to cyclopentanones has been advanced under photoredox and electrochemical conditions, enabling the concomitant introduction of a wide array of functional groups. The expansion to 1- and 4-tetralones has been achieved for the first time under ...

Biological examinations of Glaucosomatid fish species have suggested that they could produce sound via swimbladder vibration, using “sonic” muscles. However, there have been few reported instances of it in the family. West Australian dhufish (Glaucosoma hebraicum) is an iconic teleost, endemic to Western Australia. Dissection of G. hebraicum in this study identified the presence of “sonic” muscle pairs in immature and sexually mature individuals. The muscle tissue originates in the otic region of the ...
