The invasion of generalist Africanized honey bees may change certain plant–pollinator interactions. We evaluated the preemption by honey bees and the exploitative competition with native bees on a tree with nocturnally dehiscent small flowers. Our main objectives were to quantify pollen production and harvesting, to verify whether honey bees exploitatively compete with native bees and to identify the effective pollinators of Spondias mombin. The nocturnally dehiscent flowers were pollen depleted ...

Oil flowers are spread over eleven angiosperm families and exploited by bees specialized on oil gathering. This reward is produced by glandular surfaces of specific floral whorls called elaiophores. Unlike trichome elaiophores, such as those of Plantaginaceae, Krameria species bear lateral petals modified into epithelial elaiophore, convergently similar to oil-secreting Malpighiaceae calyx. Krameriaceae is an oil-offering monotypic group of eighteen species with little information on their pollination ...

The increasing global appreciation of macadamia nuts (Macadamia integrifolia, Proteaceae) and plans for expanding their production require appropriate management to support pollination services, since macadamia orchards depend on pollinators to assure high nut yields. Brazil is the 8th largest producer of macadamia nuts globally; however, studies on the pollination services associated with Brazilian orchards are insufficient. In this study, a survey of pollinators associated with the experimentally- ...

Abstract Aim Intraspecific trait variation (ITV) within natural plant communities can be large, influencing local ecological processes and dynamics. Here, we shed light on how ITV in vegetative and floral traits responds to large‐scale abiotic and biotic gradients (i.e., climate and species richness). Specifically, we tested whether associations of ITV with temperature, precipitation and species richness were consistent with any of four hypotheses relating to stress tolerance and competition. Furthermore, ...

The association of stingless bees with pig carcasses exposed in a Brazilian Dry Forest area were examined. Modified Shannon traps were settled together to collect these insects during two seasons (dry and rainy). 564 bees were collected, belonging to three tribes and nine species. The majority of bees (75.5%) was collected during the dry season, and Partamona seridoensis Pedro & Camargo (32.8%) and Trigonisca sp. (20.9%) were the most abundant species. Five decomposition stages were recognized, being ...

Insect pollination services substantially enhance global major crops in terms of fruit quantity and potentially quality. Even Citrus crops, which have been supported by broad breeding programs and well-established agrotechniques, depend on pollinators to achieve high yields. In this study, the effects of pollination services on the production of 'Lee' and 'Nova' tangelos were experimentally assessed in north-eastern Brazil. The associated flower visitors were surveyed and the visitation pattern on ...

Floral larceny is expected to impact negatively the female fitness of alien plant species; however, the effects of nectar robbers are context-dependent and sometimes neutral. In this study, the effect of nectar robbers on the female fitness of the ornamental and invasive yellow bells, Tecoma stans (L.) Juss. ex Kunth (Bignoniaceae), was tested in two typical exotic habitats in northeastern Brazil: urban area and rural land. In order to quantify the intensity of floral larceny and identify the flower- ...

Abstract: Rapid land-use/land cover changes (LULCC) have led to habitat loss and fragmentation in the natural forest areas, which are mainly due to the intense and rapid expansion of urban areas and intense agricultural management. These processes are strongly threatening biodiversity maintenance and the ecosystem services provided by them. Among the ecosystem services under threat, pollination has been widely studied since this service is essential to promote food production and, therefore, human ...

Abstract The patterns and drivers of pollen transport on insect bodies can have important consequences for plant reproductive success and floral evolution; however, they remain little studied. Recently, pollinator bodies have been further described as pollen competitive arenas, where pollen grains can compete for space, with implications for the evolution of pollen dispersal strategies and plant community assembly. However, the identity, strength, and diversity of pollen competitive interactions ...

The influence of animal pollination on the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Fabaceae) production is quite variable, but there is a tendency towards the predominance of strong self-fertility. Few studies tested for the influence of pollination on quality aspects of production and seed germination. In view of the global economic importance of the common bean, and the pollinator crisis that the planet is experiencing, the objective of this study was to investigate the influence of animal pollination ...

Encounters between flowers and invertebrates are key events for the functioning of tropical forests. Assessing the structure of networks composed of the interactions between those partners leads to a better understanding of ecosystem functioning and the effects of environmental factors on ecological processes. Gathering such data is, however, costly and time-consuming, especially in the highly diverse tropics. We aimed to provide a comprehensive repository of available flower-invertebrate interaction ...

ABSTRACT Flowering plants can be visited by a wide diversity of pollinating insects; however, the structure of plant–insect interactions for non‐bee pollinators is not well‐known, even though non‐bee insects can play a central role in the pollination of many plant species. Pollination by non‐syrphid flies, such as bee flies ( Bombylius major L., Bombyliidae, Diptera), has often been underappreciated. Bee flies represent a diverse group of long‐tongue nectar‐feeding insects that are often reported ...

Abstract Background and Aims Spatial variation in plant–pollinator interactions is a key driver of floral trait diversification. A so far overlooked qualitative aspect of this variation is the behavioural component on flowers that relates to the pollinator fit. We tested the hypothesis that variation in pollinator behaviour influences the geographical pattern of phenotypic selection across the distribution range of the oil-producing Krameria grandiflora (Krameriaceae). This variation mainly involves ...

Abstract Pollen protein content has been demonstrated to be an essential nutritional component for bees and thus important in mediating plant–pollinator interactions. However, little is known on the drivers and consequences of among‐species variation in pollen protein content and how this can impact male and female reproductive success across plant species. Among‐species variation in resources allocated to pollen nutrition could further be constrained by life‐history strategies (e.g. survival‐reproduction ...

Background Presence of eglandular individuals (lacking floral oil glands) within populations of several neotropical Malpighiaceae is intriguing, with ecological and evolutionary implications so far unexplored. This floral dimorphism (glandular and eglandular individuals) is hypothesised to be related to energetic costs of oil production and pollinator deception.
