Over forty-five years have elapsed since Derek Mahon announced his arrival at the forefront of Irish literary life with the release of Night-Crossing, but he remains an elusive figure. In the first comprehensive biography of Ireland's greatest living poet, Stephen ... a remarkable personal story. Here he establishes the life circumstances which stimulated or provoked Derek Mahon into poetic response, detailing for the first time his troubled upbringing in Belfast, his youthful suicide attempt and his decades-long struggle with alcoholism. He sets Mahon's poems against these ...

Robert J. P. Williams,

Aluminium chemistry has features in common with two other groups of elements: (1) divalent magnesium and calcium, and (2) trivalent chromium and iron. The essential differences between the first group and aluminium are explored and it is shown that the much higher acidity of aluminium makes it such a powerful competitor for oxygen-donor ligands, opposite functions of both magnesium and calcium, in cells that its presence is damaging. Quality of life (QOL) assessments in patients with oesophageal cancer should provide clinically meaningful data that can assist management decision making. This study describes the development of a specific module for oesophageal cancer to use with the European Organisation into Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QOL questionnaire, the EORTC QLQ-C30. Relevant QOL issues were generated from a literature search and interviews with patients and oesophageal cancer specialists. Issues were formulated ...

Derek A. Roff,

This paper explores four aspects of the evolution of life-history variation in fish, with particular reference to the flatfishes: 1. genetic variation and evolutionary response; 2. the size and age at first reproduction; 3. adult lifespan and variation in recruitment; 4. the relationship between reproductive effort and age. Evolutionary response may be limited by previous evolutionary pathways (phylogenetic variation) or by lack of genetic variation due to selection for a single trait. Estimates ...

Abstract This study examines gender differences in COVID‐19‐related stress and the relationship between COVID‐19‐related stress and life satisfaction in a large sample of financial advisors in the United States ( n = 499). Compared to men, women reported greater increases in work‐related stress since the onset of COVID‐19, higher levels of stress from managing family responsibilities, and more stress from witnessing the impact of COVID‐19 on their clients (i.e., empathetic stress). Using an integrative ...

Derek A. Daigle, Birgitte B. Simen, Pascale Pochart,

This unit describes a method to convert PCR products (amplicons) flanked by universal M13 primers into a library for use on all 454 Sequencing Systems (454 Life Sciences, a Roche Company). This is especially useful for simultaneous sequencing and analysis of large numbers of amplicons or for the detection of minor variations within the amplified products. The method described here involves preparing a library of DNA with specific primers containing adaptor sequences recognized by the GS Junior System ...
