Numb can antagonize Notch signaling to diversify the fates of sister cells. We report here that paired sister cells acquire different fates in all three Drosophila neuronal lineages that make diverse types of antennal lobe projection neurons (PNs). Only one in each pair of postmitotic neurons survives into the adult stage in both anterodorsal (ad) and ventral (v) PN lineages. Notably, Notch signaling specifies the PN fate in the vPN lineage but promotes programmed cell death in the missing siblings ...

Thermoacidophilic cyanidia (Cyanidiales) are the primary photosynthetic eukaryotes in volcanic areas. These red algae also serve as important model organisms for studying life in extreme habitats. The global biodiversity and community structure of Cyanidiales remain unclear despite previous sampling efforts. Here, we surveyed the Cyanidiales biodiversity in the Tatun Volcano Group ( TVG ) area in Taiwan using environmental DNA sequencing. We generated 174 rbc L sequences from eight samples from four ...

Abstract Stimuli‐responsive photoluminescent (PL) materials have been widely used as fluorescent ink for data security applications. However, traditional fluorescent inks are limited in maintaining the secrecy of information because the inks are usually visible by naked eyes either under ambient light or UV‐light illumination. Here, we introduced metal‐free water‐soluble graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g‐CNQDs) as invisible security ink for information coding, encryption, and decryption. The ...

Guigang Zhang, Zhi‐An Lan, Lihua Lin, Sen Lin, Xinchen Wang,

We report the direct splitting of pure water by light-excited graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) modified with Pt, PtO x , and CoO x as redox cocatalysts, while pure g-C3N4 is virtually inactive for overall water splitting by photocatalysis. The novelty is in the selective creation of both H2 and O2 cocatalysts on surface active sites of g-C3N4via photodeposition triggering the splitting of water for the simultaneous evolution of H2 and O2 gases in a stoichiometric ratio of 2 : 1, irradiated with light, ...

Exclusive Pt species supported on inert substrates have not achieved satisfactory performance for cryogenic CO oxidation because of the constraint of the competitive Langmuir–Hinshelwood process in which the strongly adsorbed CO inhibits the activation of O2. Here, we develop a catalyst of Pt nanoparticles on Al2O3 that exhibits extremely high activity with 100% CO conversion at −20 °C and orders of magnitude higher specific rate than current commercial catalysts. To study the specific therapeutic effect of zinc on spinal cord injury (SCI) and its specific protective mechanism. The effects of zinc ions on neuronal cells were examined in a mouse SCI model and in vitro. In vivo, neurological function was assessed by Basso Mouse Scaleat (BMS) at 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28 days after spinal cord injury. The number of neurons and histomorphology were observed by nissl staining and hematoxylin-eosin staining (HE). The chromatin and mitochondrial structure of neurons ...

In this work, we study the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction catalyzed by α-MoC(100) supported typical platinum group metal (PGM) single atoms (Rh1, Pd1, and Pt1) and Au1 via density functional theory calculations. The adsorption energies of key reaction intermediates and the kinetic barriers of the proposed rate-determining step in the WGS were systematically investigated. It is found that Rh1, Pd1, and Pt1 can serve as single-atom promoters (SAPs) to improve the WGS performance of surface Mo atoms on ...

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with complete dispersion of metal species on substrates provide the ultimate atom economy and opportunities for improved heterogenous catalysis or to develop more catalyst formulation. However, atomically dispersed dopants can also improve the catalyst in an indirect capacity. Here, we report an Ir1/α-MoC SAC that exhibits high activity for water gas shift reaction with ∼100% CO conversion at 150 °C. The reaction rate of this catalyst is orders of magnitude higher than ...

The effects of critical defects on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of Al–7.82Zn–1.99Mg–2.41Cu–0.12Zr alloy under under-ageing (UA), peak-ageing (PA) double-ageing (DA) and retrogression and reageing (RRA) were investigated. It is found that anodic dissolution of grain boundary precipitates (GBPs) for UA sample generates critical defects due to low Cu content of GBPs, whereas the dissolution of Al, Mg and Zn elements within the grain interior is responsible for the formation of critical defects for PA, ...

A new type of hydrogen sensor based on a side-polished fiber Bragg grating (FBG) coated with thin palladium film was demonstrated experimentally. The used FBG with the reflectivity of 90% is fabricated in a hydrogen-loaded single-mode fiber (SMF-28) by using the phase mask writing technique of a KrF excimer laser. The experimental results show that proposed sensor can be applied for hydrogen concentration measurements.
