Seventy‐four new heat flow values have been determined at sites from New Jersey to Georgia, mostly in the Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal Plain provinces. Relatively high heat flows are characteristic of synmetamorphic and postmetamorphic granites exposed in the Piedmont and occurring in the basement beneath the sediments of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The Piedmont heat flow and heat generation values, determined in granites, metagranites, and one Slate Belt site, lie in a belt approximately parallel ...

The potential contamination of ancient residues from both modern plant sources and sediments adjacent to archaeological contexts can complicate interpretation in the field of starch grain analysis, thus affecting the sustainable use of the method in archaeobotany. In this study, we examined two potential sources of contamination at a wheat field in Shandong Province and a maize field in Beijing, the Nanzhuangtou site in Hebei Province and the Zhuannian site in Beijing in Northern China. Sandria Godwin, Bruce McGuire, Edgar Chambers, Margaret McDowell, Linda Cleveland, Erika Edwards-Perry, Linda Ingwersen,

Abstract In three studies, individuals used various PSEAs (bean bag, peg board, ruler, sausage diagram, and size grid) to estimate portion sizes for three different categories of meat (intact cuts of meat, ribs, and link-type sausages). For intact cuts of meat, individuals generally were able to estimate length and width accurately, but had more difficulty estimating thickness regardless of the PSEA used. For ribs, while no PSEA provided an average estimation error less than +40%, a correlation existed ...

Abstract The hypothesis that blockade of muscarinic receptors is associated with increased Alzheimer‐type pathology was investigated in Parkinson's disease. Amyloid plaque densities were more than 2.5‐fold higher in cases treated with antimuscarinic medication in the long term compared with untreated or short‐term treated cases ( p = 0.005 and 0.00005, respectively). Neurofibrillary tangle densities were also highest in chronic compared with untreated or acute‐treated groups ( p = 0.02 and 0.05, respectively). ...

Targeting transcription replication conflicts, a major source of endogenous DNA double-stranded breaks and genomic instability could have important anticancer therapeutic implications. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) is critical to DNA replication and repair processes. Through a rational drug design approach, we identified a small molecule PCNA inhibitor, AOH1996, which selectively kills cancer cells. AOH1996 enhances the interaction between PCNA and the largest subunit of RNA polymerase ...

Hepatoma Tissue Culture (HTC) cell nuclei were isolated from untreated cells and from cells treated with sodium butyrate to increase the levels of acetylated histone. Nuclei from sodium butyrate treated cells exhibited a dramatic increased rate of digestion with DNase I as compared to control cell nuclei. Micrococcal nuclease showed no preference for chromatin containing hyperacetylated histones.

This chapter discusses the regulation of midbrain dopamine neurons by nicotine. The chapter summarizes the results of recent studies where two approaches are used to study the action of nicotine on midbrain dopamine neurons. The first was a neurochemical approach where the effect of nicotine on the release of dopamine in vitro using isolated slices and in vivo utilizing push-pull perfusion of rat striatum in freely moving unanesthetized rats is examined. The second approach is electrophysiological ...

A fluorosilane nanoparticle surface treatment of alumina nanoparticles was studied to test a hypothesis that reduced surface energy would improve dispersion and extend wear resistance of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to trace nanoparticle loadings. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on PTFE nanocomposites with 0.00, 0.13, 0.50 and 1.00% untreated and treated 40 nm α phase alumina nanoparticles. The untreated alumina reduced the wear of PTFE by 10–100× at 0.13% loading with variability typical ...

People high in defensive pessimism—a coping style characterized by ruminating on worse case scenarios when under stress—perform better under high than low academic pressure. The goal of the present study was to explore whether defensive pessimists might also perform better under high rather than low stereotype threat. Results supported hypotheses: specifically, some individuals’ (e.g., defensive pessimists) performance was higher under high than low stereotype threat.

The release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cytokines by alveolar macrophages has been demonstrated in asbestos-induced pulmonary fibrosis, but the mechanism linking alveolar macrophages to the pathogenesis is not known. The GTPase Rac1 is a second messenger that plays an important role in host defense. In this study, we demonstrate that Rac1 null mice are protected from asbestos-induced pulmonary fibrosis, as determined by histological and biochemical analysis. We hypothesized that Rac1 induced ...

This article uses the process of a teacher renewal partnership programme to explore the role of the university academic as a facilitator of change. Responses to a series of interview questions relating to change were used to explore and examine the dimensions of the facilitator's role. Facilitators report that the role is complex, often uncertain and requires an understanding of the school and its culture and schools' and teachers' previous experiences in professional development programmes. Oligodendrogliomas (OGs) are rare in children and have not been well characterized from a molecular viewpoint. In adults, losses on chromosomes 1p and/or 19q are common in "oligodendroglial" neoplasms and are highly associated with chemosensitivity and greater length of survival, especially in the anaplastic category. We have analyzed the 1p/19q status of pediatric OGs and compared it with similar alterations in adult OGs. Paraffin sections from 26 pediatric OGs (21 WHO Grade II OGs; 2 anaplastic oligodendrogliomas [ ...
