ABSTRACT The in vitro activity of gemifloxacin against 316 bloodstream isolates of staphylococci, pneumococci, and enterococci was compared with the activities of six fluoroquinolones and three other antimicrobial agents. Of the antimicrobial agents tested, gemifloxacin was the most potent against penicillin-intermediate and -resistant pneumococci, methicillin-susceptible and -resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates, and coagulase-negative staphylococci.

The effect of serum albumin on the antimicrobial activity of ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, and a 1:1 ratio of cefotaxime and its desacetyl metabolite against nonpseudomonal Gram‐negative bacilli was determined. Antimicrobial activity of drugs was evaluated by measuring minimum inhibitory ( mic ) and bactericidal ( mbc ) concentrations in broth with and without human serum albumin. The analysis of logarithmically transformed mean mic s and mbc s showed that there was a highly significant interaction between drug ...

Mutations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) result in target organ resistance to 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D3], the active form of vitamin D, and cause hereditary 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D resistant rickets (HVDRR). We analyzed the VDR of a patient who exhibited three genetic diseases: HVDRR, congenital total lipodystrophy, and persistent mullerian duct syndrome. The patient was treated with extremely high dose calcitriol (12.5 microg/d) which normalized serum calcium and improved his rickets. ...

A perspective on the design of all-oxide heterostructures for application in photoelectrochemical cells for solar water splitting is provided. Particular attention is paid to those structures which possess nanoscale feature dimensionality, as structures of this type are most likely to utilize the benefits afforded by the formation of oxide heterojunctions and likely to show functional behavior relating to the interfacial region. In the context of this discussion, a novel hetero-nanostructure array, ...

Gram-negative bacterial peptidoglycan is specifically recognized by the host intracellular sensor NOD1, resulting in the generation of innate immune responses. Although epithelial cells are normally refractory to external stimulation with peptidoglycan, these cells have been shown to respond in a NOD1-dependent manner to Gram-negative pathogens that can either invade or secrete factors into host cells. In the present work, we report that Gram-negative bacteria can deliver peptidoglycan to cytosolic ...

Family and twin studies have suggested a genetic component in autism. We performed a genome-wide screen with 264 microsatellites markers in 51 multiplex families, using non-parametric linkage methods. Families were recruited by a collaborative group including clinicians from Sweden, France, Norway, the USA, Italy, Austria and Belgium. Using two-point and multipoint affected sib-pair analyses, 11 regions gave nominal P -values of 0.05 or lower. Four of these regions overlapped with regions on chromosomes ...

Dealing with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a monumental test of medical skills and resources worldwide. The management of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) can at times be difficult, but treating CAP in the setting of COVID-19 can be particularly trying and confusing and raises a number of challenging questions relating to etiology, diagnosis, and treatment. This article is based on the authors' experiences and presents an overview of how CAP during COVID-19 is handled in Canada. We ...

Understanding the molecular mechanisms of ultraviolet (UV) induced melanoma formation is becoming crucial with more reported cases each year. Expression of type II nuclear receptor Retinoid-X-Receptor α (RXRα) is lost during melanoma progression in humans. Here, we observed that in mice with melanocyte-specific ablation of RXRα and RXRβ, melanocytes attract fewer IFN-γ secreting immune cells than in wild-type mice following acute UVR exposure, via altered expression of several chemoattractive and ...

The electronic structure origins of interfacial losses in hematite photoanodes and the cause of the literature-reported order-of-magnitude photocurrent increase upon short high-temperature annealing are investigated. Synchrotron-based soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy is used to probe the unoccupied states at and near the interface between hematite (α-Fe2O3) and fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO). Oxygen K-edge and iron L-edge absorption spectra indicate that the interfacial interaction reduces the degree ...
