Purpose: This study was undertaken to assess the frequency and sequelae of portal system thrombosis (PST) after splenectomy in patients with cancer or chronic hematologic disorders and to determine whether routine surveillance imaging for this potential complication is warranted. Method: The radiology reports of 203 consecutive patients with cancer or chronic hematologic disorders who underwent splenectomy between January 1990 and January 1997 were reviewed. Imaging examinations and medical records ...

This study reviews the spectrum of sonographic findings in patients with gallbladder cancer, attempts to determine if sonography can identify patients with potentially resectable disease, and emphasizes the limitations of ultrasonography in the evaluation of -gallbladder cancer. Thirty-five consecutive patients with histologically proven gallbladder carcinoma who had preoperative abdominal ultrasonography and surgery were identified. Involvement of the gallbladder and gallbladder fossa, metastases, ...

Because the vessels of the hand are small and very responsive to stimuli, arteriography of the hand requires painstaking technique, temperature control, and sometimes vasodilator administration to produce sufficient radiographic detail. Twenty-five patients underwent arteriography of the hand, which was performed from a transfemoral approach to evaluate pathologic changes and the possibility of interventional treatment. Production of high-quality images by means of attention to technical factors ...

The ability of screening mammography programs serving women of different socioeconomic status (SES) to diagnose early stage breast carcinoma in a comparably effective fashion has been questioned. Results of screening 50,653 women of lower SES were compared with those of screening 45,923 more socioeconomically advantaged women during the same period in New York State. Results were compared with those reported for the general population to the New York State cancer registry.Additional workup was required ...

Abstract As knowledge of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression improves, the field has recognized the need to diversify the pipeline, broaden strategies and approaches to therapies, as well as delivery mechanisms. A better understanding of the earliest biological processes of AD/dementia would help inform drug target selection. Currently there are a number of programs exploring these alternate avenues. This meeting will allow experts in the field (academia, industry, government) to provide perspectives ...

Objectives: In response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, traditional, in-person neuropsychological assessment services paused in most settings. Neuropsychologists have sought to establish new guidelines and care models using telehealth neuropsychology (teleNP) services. The need to adapt to remote technology became the most difficult challenge to date for existing practice models. Results: Primary considerations for transitioning to teleNP include scope and limitations of the telehealth modality, informed ...

Chronic pain and opioid addiction are 2 pressing public health problems, and prescribing clinicians often lack the skills necessary to manage these conditions. Our study sought to address the benefits of a coalition of an academic medical center pain faculty and government agencies in addressing the high unintentional overdose death rates in New Mexico. New Mexico's 2012-2013 mandated chronic pain and addiction education programs studied more than 1000 clinicians. Positive changes were noted in ...

Background The use of immunization assessment and referral (A/R) in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has been shown to produce dramatic improvements in vaccination coverage when coupled with parental incentive; however, data are lacking to support the use of A/R alone. Objective To determine the effectiveness of A/R in increasing immunization coverage among WIC participants. Design Participating WIC centers were assigned to1 of 3 interventions that delivered ...

Esophageal pressure (P Es ) can be used to approximate pleural pressure (P pl ) and might be clinically useful, particularly in the obese e.g., to guide mechanical ventilator settings in critical illness. However, mediastinal artifact (the difference between true P pl and P Es ) may limit acceptance of the measurement, and reproducibility of P Es measurements remains unknown. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effect of body posture on P Es in a cohort of obese, but healthy subjects, some of whom had multiple ...

Receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) mediates cell death and inflammatory signaling and is increased in multiple sclerosis (MS) brain samples. Here, we investigate the role of glial RIPK1 kinase activity in mediating MS pathogenesis. We demonstrate RIPK1 levels correlate with MS disease progression. We find microglia are susceptible to RIPK1-mediated cell death and identify an inflammatory gene signature that may contribute to the neuroinflammatory milieu in MS patients. We uncover a distinct ...

Elevated expression of β-amyloid (Aβ1-42) and tau are considered risk-factors for Alzheimer's disease in healthy older adults. We investigated the effect of aging and cerebrospinal fluid levels of Aβ1-42 and tau on 1) frontal metabolites measured with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and 2) cognition in cognitively normal older adults (n = 144; age range 50-85). Levels of frontal gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA+) and myo-inositol relative to creatine (mI/tCr) were predicted by age. Levels of ...

In this paper we explore the potential of academic podcasting to effect positive change within academia and between academia and society. Building on the concept of “epistemic living spaces,” we consider how podcasting can change how we evaluate what is legitimate knowledge and methods for knowledge production, who has access to what privileges and power, the nature of our connections within academia and with other partners, and how we experience the constraints and opportunities of space and time. ...

Naming decline after left temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery is common and difficult to predict. Preoperative language fMRI may predict naming decline, but this application is still lacking evidence. We performed a large multicenter cohort study of the effectiveness of fMRI in predicting naming deficits after left TLE surgery.

Women account for two thirds of the prevalence and incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Evidence suggest that sex may differently influence the expression of proteins amyloid-beta (Aβ1-42) and tau, for which early detection is crucial in prevention of the disease. We investigated the effect of aging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of Aβ1-42 and tau on frontal metabolites measured with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in a cohort of cognitively normal ...

Abstract Objective To define left temporal lobe regions where surgical resection produces a persistent postoperative decline in naming visual objects. Methods Pre‐ and postoperative brain magnetic resonance imaging data and picture naming (Boston Naming Test) scores were obtained prospectively from 59 people with drug‐resistant left temporal lobe epilepsy. All patients had left hemisphere language dominance at baseline and underwent surgical resection or ablation in the left temporal lobe. Postoperative ...

This communication paper reflects on discussions from a workshop about Indigenous involvement in the peer review and editorial processes. Arctic-based research is undergoing a paradigm shift to include local Indigenous Peoples, their priorities, and knowledge throughout the research process. This special issue is an excellent example; it highlights research involving partnerships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers to support knowledge co-production. Despite this shift, we find little ...
