Topology preserving mappings are great tools for data visualization and inspection in large datasets. This research presents a combination of several topology preserving mapping models with some basic classifier ensemble and boosting techniques in order to increase the stability conditions and, as an extension, the classification capabilities of the former. A study and comparison of the performance of some novel and classical ensemble techniques are presented in this paper to test their suitability, ...

Ubuçu (Manicaria saccifera Gaertn.) is a palm tree found in the Brazilian territory and throughout South America, mainly in the Amazon Forest biome. Tururi, a sack that protects the fruits and hangs from the branches of Ubuçu, is a vegetal fiber material with great use potential. Ecodesign studies are focusing on new sustainable products and there is a growing demand for the use of biodegradable and sustainable materials. The Ubuçu palm tree and tururi's characteristics; its collection, processing ...

Statistical re-sampling techniques have been used extensively and successfully in the machine learning approaches for generation of classifier and predictor ensembles. It has been frequently shown that combining so called unstable predictors has a stabilizing effect on and improves the performance of the prediction system generated in this way. In this paper we use the re-sampling techniques in the context of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We show that the proposed PCA ensembles exhibit a much ...

Weighted Voting Superposition (WeVoS) is a novel summarization algorithm that may be applied to the results of an ensemble of topology preserving maps in order to identify the lowest topographical error in a map and thereby, to calculate the best possible visualization of the internal structure of its datasets. It is applied in this research to the food industry field that is studying the olfactory properties of Spanish dry-cured ham. The datasets used for the analysis are taken from the readings ...

The main concept behind ensemble learning model is the simple intuitive idea of a committee of experts working together to solve a problem. In all likelihood, when dealing with a complicated problem, a group of experts with varied experience in the same area will have a higher probability of reaching a satisfactory solution than a single expert. All members contribute their own experience and initiatives and the group as a whole can choose to uphold or to reject a new idea on its own merits. In ...

Malicious software attacks can disrupt information systems, violating security principles of availability, confidentiality and integrity. Attackers use malware to gain control, steal data, keep access and cover traces left on the compromised systems. The dynamic analysis of malware is useful to obtain an execution trace that can be used to assess the extent of an attack, to do incident response and to point to adequate counter-measures. An analysis of the captured malware can provide analysts with ...

In this study ensemble techniques have been applied in the frame of topology preserving mappings with visualization purposes. A novel extension of the ViSOM (Visualization Induced SOM) is obtained by the use of the ensemble meta-algorithm and a later fusion process. This main fusion algorithm has two different variants, considering two different criteria for the similarity of nodes. These criteria are Euclidean distance and similarity on Voronoi polygons. The goal of this upgrade is to improve the ...

Forest fires represent a quite complex environment and an accurate prediction of the fires generated is crucial when trying to react quickly and effectively in such a critical situation. In this study, an hybrid system is applied to predict the evolution of forest fires. The Case-Based Reasoning methodology combined with a summarization of SOM ensembles algorithm has been used to face this problem. The CBR methodology is used as the solution generator in the system, reusing past solutions given ...

One of the main problems that Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) - mainly anomaly-based ones - have to face are those attacks not previously seen (zero-day attacks). The technique applies mutant ...

In the case of projection methods based on unsupervised learning, the problem of instability makes it difficult to devise an easy way of combining their results into a final solution. This is mainly because it is a global type of analysis, which means that very little information can be obtained once it has been completed. This chapter centres on different methods of enhancing the use of ensembles with another visualisation-centred unsupervised learning algorithms: the topology-preserving map family.

This book conducts a review of research into the application of “committee of experts” or ensemble learning techniques to artificial neural networks that employ unsupervised learning for dimensionality reduction tasks and especially, for visualizing multi-dimensional data sets. In addition, it sets out a method of assessing and identifying data-set outliers by means of ensemble and statistical analysis.
