The importance of planned and supported transition processes for persons with impairments to move from one education institution to another, or from education to employment, cannot be overemphasised. In the Ghanaian context, while some attention has been given to the experiences of individuals with disabilities and their participation in universities, less attention has been paid to their transition journey to work. In this study, 27 persons with hearing and visual impairments were recruited to ...

Equitable access to quality education has been recognised as an important human right in several international conventions. Despite the importance of education to persons with disabilities, their participation has been found to be ineffective. In the Ghanaian context, most previous studies have largely reported on barriers encountered in primary and secondary school, with a limited focus on the participation of students with disabilities in tertiary institutions. Therefore, the specific objective ...

Abstract DNA gyrase supercoils DNA in bacteria. The fact that it is essential in all bacteria and absent from eukaryotes makes it an ideal drug target. We discuss the action of coumarin and quinolone drugs on gyrase. In the case of coumarins, the drugs are known to be competitive inhibitors of the gyrase ATPase reaction. From a combination of structural and biochemical studies, the molecular details of the gyrase-coumarin complex are well established. In the case of quinolones, the drugs are thought ...

Lois M. Wentzell, Anthony Maxwell,

Quinolone drugs can inhibit bacterial DNA replication, via interaction with the type II topoisomerase DNA gyrase. Using a DNA template containing a preferred site for quinolone-induced gyrase cleavage, we have demonstrated that the passage of the bacteriophage T7 replication complex is blocked in vitro by the formation of a gyrase-drug-DNA complex. The majority of the polymerase is arrested approximately 10 bp upstream of this preferred site, although other minor sites of blocking have been observed. ...

Lois J. Wurfel, George M. Maxwell,

A study has been made of 26 children with the ‘battered baby’ syndrome, 8 of whom died. There was a high incidence of irregular unions among the parents and some evidence of other anti-social behaviour. It is recommended that all such cases should be reported to a central authority, and that model legislation be considered for the protection of these patients, and of the reporting physicians.

Microcin B17 is a 3.1-kDa bactericidal peptide; the putative target of this antibiotic is DNA gyrase. Microcin B17 has no detectable effect on gyrase-catalysed DNA supercoiling or relaxation activities in vitro and is unable to stabilise DNA cleavage in the absence of nucleotides. However, in the presence of ATP, or the non-hydrolysable analogue 5′-adenylyl β,γ-imidodiphosphate, microcin B17 stabilises a gyrase-dependent DNA cleavage complex in a manner reminiscent of quinolones, Ca2+, or the bacterial ...

Globally, the prevalence of diabetes has risen significantly by 62% over the last ten years. A complication of unmanaged diabetes is diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), which adversely affects the quality of life of individuals with diabetes and inflicts a huge economic burden on the family, government, and health care services. However, this complication is preventable with adequate patient knowledge and practice regarding DFU and foot care. The present study was aimed at assessing the knowledge, attitude, ...

Failure of growth in congenital heart disease is an accepted finding (Taussig, 1947), and among the many factors which have been adduced to explain this failure are: respiratory infections (Mehrizi and Drash, 1962), haemodynamic difficulties, and parental size (Umansky and Hauck, 1962). This study is the report of an attempt to show the extent of the growth failure, to test its association with the factors mentioned, and to discuss briefly the effects of surgery upon the pattern of growth.

Illuminating the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of parasites is one of the most pressing issues facing modern science, and is critical for basic science, the global economy, and human health. Extremely important to this effort are data on the disease-causing organisms of wild animal hosts (including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, helminths, arthropods, and fungi). Here we present an updated version of the Global Mammal Parasite Database, a database of the parasites of wild ungulates (artiodactyls ...
