Perforin (pfp)-mediated cytotoxicity is one of the principal immunosurveillance mechanisms involved in the fight against cancer. However, its importance in spontaneous epithelial cancer is still poorly defined. In this study, we use a realistic mouse model that displays many features that are equivalent to human pathology to evaluate the role of pfp-dependent immunosurveillance by comparing tumor progression in rat ERBB-2 (neu) transgenic, pfp-proficient (neu(+)/pfp(+)) or pfp-deficient (neu(+)/pfp(-)) ...

The application of reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) to concentrate and/or fractionate volatile fatty acids (VFAs, occurring in acidogenic effluents) was systematically assessed for the first time using three commercial spiral wound modules. A bench scale plant was used to test the polyamide membrane cartridges, namely: AG1812-34D, DK1812-34D and NFS-3B-1812F. The effects of main operational parameters (pH, temperature, applied pressure) were firstly studied in total recirculation mode, using ...

A synthetic approach towards a series of 3-hydroxymethyl-5-(1H-1,2,3-triazol)isoxazolidines has been reported, according to a procedure based on the cycloaddition reaction, under microwave irradiation, of a nitrone with 1-vinyl triazoles, prepared by a click reaction of azides with alkynes. Biological tests show that the synthesized compounds are able to inhibit proliferation of follicular and anaplastic human thyroid cancer cell lines, with IC50 values ranging from 3.87 to 8.76 μM. The obtained ...

Lifestyle habits and parental modeling have been reported to influence adolescents food choices, such as for fruit and vegetable consumption. The aim of this study was to investigate the association be-tween personal eating (i. e. breakfast and snacking behavior), lifestyle (sedentary and physical activity), and family-related (i. e. consuming meals with parents, family rules, and television use) habits and fruit and vegetable consumption among adolescents living in Sicily, southern Italy. A cross- ...

The present work aimed to verify the feasibility of producing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) at high concentrations from an alternative and cheap carbon source such as the carboxylic acids (VFAs) obtained by the anaerobic fermentation of cheese whey (CW). An electrodialysis (ED) step was proposed for the obtainment of a concentrated acidic stream, suitable for being employed as feeding solution in the consecutive fed-batch culture system for PHAs production. Experiments conducted in duplicate shown that ...

Apicomplexa form a phylum of obligate parasitic protozoa of great clinical and veterinary importance. These parasites synthesize glycoconjugates for their survival and infectivity, but the enzymatic steps required to generate the glycosylation precursors are not completely characterized. In particular, glucosamine-phosphate N-acetyltransferase (GNA1) activity, needed to produce the essential UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) donor, has not been identified in any Apicomplexa. We scanned the genomes ...
