A variety of saline solutions, having wide ranges of ionic concentrations and osmotic pressures, have been used for insect tissues. A review of this work is given by Barsa (1954). Several investigators have attempted to formulate satisfactory saline solutions for the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana. Pringle (1938) used a solution hypotonic to cockroach blood, with a Na/K ratio of 34, and a K/Ca ratio of 1.4. Yeager's (1939) solution is isotonic and the corresponding ion ratios are 5.2 and ...

Abstract Despite the fact that women are increasingly reaching the highest levels of management in business organisations, negative stereotypes persist concerning their ability to handle the discourse of leadership. Drawing on a large database of recorded material collected from women in a variety of New Zealand workplaces by the Victoria University of Wellington Language in the Workplace Project, this paper illustrates the value of both qualitative and quantitative analysis in challenging such ...

Canine aortic strip studies revealed insensitivity of angiotensin II (AII)‐induced aortic contraction to inhibition by the non‐peptide antagonist DuP753 (p K B = 6.7 ± 0.1). In order to determine the origin of this phenomenon we cloned the canine homologue of the AT 1 AII receptor. Expression of this cDNA in COS‐7 cells indicated a low affinity of DuP753 for the cloned receptor ( K D = 92 nM). The predicted amino acid sequence is highly homologous to other mammalian AT 1 receptors; sequence comparisons suggest ...

Abstract The pyruvic oxidase system found in a cell particle obtained from Bacillus stearothermophilus is easily inactivated at the growing temperatures of the organism (60–65 °C.) unless magnesium ions, pyruvate, and oxygen are present. Pyruvic oxidase is the only enzyme (or system) thus far found in this organism that is sensitive to destruction by heat in the temperature range of optimum growth.

Abstract It is established that, in many countries, farmers recognise displayed tidiness in farming practice as indicative of ‘good’ farming. This paper asks whether Irish farmers share this recognition, and considers how this may affect uptake of agri‐environmental schemes and the potential for alterations in farming practices associated with such schemes to become ‘culturally embedded’. Taking a Bourdieusian approach, this paper examines features which Irish farmers associate with tidy, ‘good’ farming ...

The inotropic effects of ouabain and amrinone singly and in combination with dichloroacetate (DCA) were assessed using isolated working perfused hearts from endotoxin-shocked (LD50/6 h) rats, with glucose and free fatty acids as substrates. Amrinone (2.7 X 10(-4) M) and ouabain (10(-5) M) alone improved myocardial mechanical performance from 25 to 75%, depending on the preload. Amrinone was more effective than ouabain at all left atrial filling pressures tested. DCA enhanced the inotropic effect of ...

LOUISE A. RACEY-BURNS, Amy Burns, W. R. Summer, R. E. Shepherd,
Ischemic dysfunction, including contracture, has been attributed to lack of ATP, although previous work has not been consistent with this concept. We describe here a model of no flow ischemic arrest, characterized by depressed levels of mechanical function upon reperfusion and high energy phosphate stores within normal limits. The decreased mechanical function bears an inverse relationship to myocardial lactate levels after twenty-minutes of reperfusion in the absence or presence of dichloroacetic ...

Of particular interest were: (a) the prevalence of use of care and justice moral orientations by the children during real-life dilemmas with siblings, (b) the ability of the children to combine both care and justice orientations in resolving the dilemmas, and (c) the presence of sex differences in the use of the two orientations. Data consisted of transcripts of sibling interactions ...

The complexity associated with how interventions result-or fail to result-in outcomes and how context matters is increasingly recognised. Logic models provide an important tool for handling complexity, with contrasting uses in programme evaluation and evidence synthesis. To reconcile these, we developed an approach that combines the strengths of both traditions, propose a taxonomy of logic models, and provide guidance on how to choose between approaches and types of logic models in systematic reviews ...
