Abstract The widespread and dissected nature of the Angolan gypsiferous salt residuals offers a uniquely detailed view of the lateral and vertical relations inherent to secondary evaporite textures, which typify exhumed salt masses worldwide. Such secondary textures are sometimes misinterpreted as primary evaporite textures. Thin, metre‐scale and patchy, dome‐like gypsum accumulations are well‐exposed within strongly incised present‐day river valleys along the eastern margin of the Namibe and Benguela ...

To support the global restart of elective surgery, data from an international prospective cohort study of 8492 patients (69 countries) was analysed using artificial intelligence (machine learning techniques) to develop a predictive score for mortality in surgical patients with SARS-CoV-2. We found that patient rather than operation factors were the best predictors and used these to create the COVIDsurg Mortality Score (https://covidsurgrisk.app). Our data demonstrates that it is safe to restart a wide ...

Abstract: The biofilm‐forming ability of 21 Listeria monocytogenes isolates, previously pulsotyped and corresponding to 16 strains, from different origins was evaluated using the Calgary Biofilm Device ® , at 37 °C. Biofilms of 4 selected strains were also produced either on pure cultures or on co‐cultures with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAO1), at 12 °C and at 37 °C. For these biofilms, the minimum biofilm eradication concentrations (MBECs) of 4 commercial dairy sanitizers (1 alkyl amine acetate based—T99, 2 ...

In this work, we developed a new wireless and battery-powered potentiostat. The device interfaces with a smartphone using a Bluetooth protocol to receive the experimental data and visualize them in real-time. This approach simplifies the design and decreases both size and cost of the device. We developed an open Android application named “BluChem” for controlling the device wirelessly, in addition to an API and a website that can be used in remote locations for data processing and management. This ...

Biodegradable starch films are promising as primary food packaging, and the k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm enables selection and classification according to pre-established parameters. Here, the KNN algorithm and principal component analysis prove to be useful tools for sorting and selecting biodegradable starch packaging. Twelve biodegradable films were produced using starch from different botanical sources by the casting method. The KNN analysis evaluated data on thickness, water vapor permeability, ...

The objective of this work was to develop biodegradable films by mixing gelatin/carboxymethylcellulose (FG/CMC) and gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol (FG/PVOH) and to evaluate the effect of adding these polymers on the properties of fish gelatin films. The films FG/CMC and FG/PVOH were produced in the proportions 90/10, 80/20 and 70/30 and characterized their physical, chemical and functional properties. The addition of CMC and PVOH improved the mechanical strength, barrier property and water solubility of ...

Chitosan is a biopolymer with high added value, and its properties are related to its molecular weight. Thus, high molecular weight values provide low solubility of chitosan, presenting limitations in its use. Based on this, several studies have developed different hydrolysis methods to reduce the molecular weight of chitosan. Acid hydrolysis is still the most used method to obtain low molecular weight chitosan and chitooligosaccharides. However, the use of acids can generate environmental impacts. ...

Also, the addition of palm oil and essential oils increases the elasticity and thickness of the packages. The packages have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties with an inhibition ...

Strontium (Sr) is known to stimulate osteogenesis, while inhibiting osteoclastogenesis, thus encouraging research on its application as a therapeutic agent for bone repair/regeneration. It has been suggested that it may possess immunomodulatory properties, which might act synergistically in bone repair/regeneration processes. To further explore this hypothesis we have designed a Sr-hybrid system composed of an in situ forming Sr-crosslinked RGD-alginate hydrogel reinforced with Sr-doped hydroxyapatite ( ...
