Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is an herbicide widely used in extensive agriculture, toxic to humans and other animals, in addition to causing contamination of water resources. The 2.4-D is resistant to conventional degradation processes, in this context, heterogeneous photocatalysis is presented as a promising alternative in the degradation of this type of micropollutant. This work aims to synthesize, characterize and evaluate the catalytic activity of Fe3O4@WO3/SBA-15 in the photodegradation ...

Summary Labouring women have been shown to have slower gastric emptying than non‐pregnant subjects, and this argument is sometimes used to recommend fasting guidelines such as nil‐by‐mouth during labour. We performed a parallel group, randomised non‐inferiority trial, comparing gastric emptying of 450 ml isocalorically‐adjusted maltodextrin, coffee with milk or pulp‐free orange juice, with 18 women in each group. The women were initially fasted for 2 h for clear fluids, 6 h for a light meal and ...

This paper describes the interaction among soil organic matter components with kaolinite, an important clay mineral present in tropical soils, especially in Brazil. XPS data show that the soil organic matter adsorbed on kaolinite has aromatic and aliphatic structures, with phenolic and/or alcoholic functions and carbonyl carbons (CO) of amide and/or carboxylic groups. The N1s spectrum of the kaolinite shows an asymmetric peak that is assigned to amide and protonated ammines probably from humin. The ...

To support the global restart of elective surgery, data from an international prospective cohort study of 8492 patients (69 countries) was analysed using artificial intelligence (machine learning techniques) to develop a predictive score for mortality in surgical patients with SARS-CoV-2. We found that patient rather than operation factors were the best predictors and used these to create the COVIDsurg Mortality Score (https://covidsurgrisk.app). Our data demonstrates that it is safe to restart a wide ...

Since the introduction of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique in 1983, nucleic acid amplification has permeated all fields of biological science, particularly clinical research. Despite its importance, PCR has been restricted to specialized centers and its use in laboratories with few resources is limited. The degree of stress generated in the endodontically treated and restored tooth can be influenced by the composition and configuration of the dowels used for the restoration. Using two-dimensional (2D) finite element analysis (FEA), this study tested the hypothesis that the characterization of the stress distribution can be influenced by which evaluation method is employed: protrusion loading and 4-point flexural strength test or varying the type of material (carbon and glass fiber) or the external ...

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) transmitted from person to person mainly by sexual intercourse or through vertical transmission during pregnancy. Female sex workers (FSWs) are exposed especially to syphilis infection, and besides all the efforts to control the spread of STIs, syphilis prevalence is still rising, mainly occurring in low-income countries. This study aimed to investigate the syphilis prevalence, demographic characteristics and sexual habits among FSWs in the Amazon ...

In the analysis and design of framed structures, the traditional methods are based on the simplified assumption that the joints are completely either pinned or rigid. However, the experimental investigations show that the frame connections present an intermediate behaviour between these two extreme cases. The dynamic excitation induced by the wind is estimated by adopting the simulation ...

Abstract: The objective of this work was to analyze land use dynamics in the Brazilian Cerrado region from 2002 to 2013. This analysis was based on the interpretation of Landsat satellite images carried out by the projects Projeto de Conservação e Utilização Sustentável da Diversidade Biológica Brasileira (Probio) and TerraClass Cerrado 2013, both coordinated by Ministério do Meio Ambiente. In 2002, 38.9% of the Cerrado was covered by some type of anthropic activity. In 2013, this percentage increased ...

ABSTRACT: Hyptis marrubioides (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal plant that is native from Brazilian Cerrado. In vitro propagation techniques make use of elicitors to alter metabolic pathways, affecting how molecules are produced both qualitatively and quantitatively. This research aimed to evaluate how abiotic elicitors salicylic acid (SA) and silver nitrate (SN) at concentrations of 30µM or 60µM influence Hyptis marrubioides seedling growth by two different in vitro culture methods. Using a long-term time series of zooplankton data collected over 62 months in a tropical reservoir (Ribeirão das Lajes Reservoir, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil), we tested whether beta diversity (as measured across six sites distributed along the main axis of the reservoir) was correlated with environmental heterogeneity ( ...

South Amazon forests have been highly deforested, including the legally protected riparian forests. The Xingu watershed restoration program used direct seeding of native trees to restore 5000 ha of forests from 2006 to 2018. Direct seeding is a low cost method, easy-to-implement at large scales. The literature on this method concludes that only a few species manage to establish successfully, resulting in an impoverished forest. In this study, we aimed to (i) assess changes in species composition ...

In addition to applied research (optimisation of monitoring networks and population persistence), spatial synchrony has important implications for unravelling the processes underlying environmental and biological dynamics. We quantified the levels of synchrony among six ...

Beginning in November 2018, Brazilian legislation regulating access to genetic heritage and associated traditional knowledge will cause a bureaucratic collapse of Biodiversity research in Brazil. Direct seeding is considered a feasible alternative for large-scale forest restoration, but little is known about the successional trajectory of tropical forests restored through direct seeding.
