Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, ...

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a respiratory pathogen that affects young children. We screened 511 nasopharyngeal aspirates for hospital-acquired HBoV from infants hospitalised with respiratory infection from January to December 2008. Among 55 children with HBoV infection, 10 cases were hospital-acquired. Compared with the community-acquired cases, coinfection with other respiratory viruses in these patients was uncommon. HBoV should be considered for inclusion in screening protocols for nosocomial childhood ...

To understand the evolutionary dynamics of human parvovirus B19, we analyzed VP1 and VP2 gene sequences of B19 sampled from Belém (Amazon), the city of São Paulo, Brazil and globally. Our analysis revealed a strikingly different pattern of evolutionary change for those viral lineages introduced into Belém, which exhibited a higher rate of nonsynonymous substitutions compared to those viruses sampled from other locations. We propose that difference this is due to the high prevalence of B19 in Belém ( ...

Vibrio metschnikovii is a natural inhabitant of the aquatic environment and has been isolated from seafood, and associated with disease in humans. This study presents results for virulence factors produced by V. metschnikovii strains isolated from fish. Results for virulence factors demonstrated that 38.5%, 92.3% and 100% of the strains were hemolytic on sheep, rabbit, and human blood agar, respectively. Verotoxin was produced by 100% of the strains tested and 76.9% were skin test positive. We concluded ...

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is characterized by a group of metabolic disturbances which lead to an enhanced risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. MS constitutes a preoccupant issue with elevated prevalence in the western countries and is often related with cancer development. Elucidating the mechanisms linking these two pathologies is, therefore, essential to identify potential therapeutic molecular targets for cancer treatment in MS patients. Salmonella is the most common etiological agent of cases and outbreaks of foodborne diarrheal illnesses. The emergence and spread of Salmonella spp., which has become multi-drug resistant and potentially more pathogenic, have increased the concern with this pathogen. In this study, 237 Salmonella spp., associated or not with foodborne salmonellosis in Brazil, belonging mainly to serotype Enteritidis, were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility and the presence of the virulence genes spvC, invA, ...

Today there are more than 2 billion alcohol users and about 1.3 billion tobacco users worldwide. The chronic and heavy use of these two substances is at the heart of numerous diseases and may wreak havoc on the human oral microbiome. This study delves into the changes that alcohol and tobacco may cause on biofilms of the human oral microbiome. To do so, we used swabs to sample the oral biofilm of 22 subjects; including 9 control-individuals with no or very low consumption of alcohol and no consumption ...
