A photoacoustic sensor has been developed for trace-gas monitoring using a near-infrared semiconductor laser emitting in the 2ν3 band of methane at 1.65 μm. The apparatus was designed for on-line process control in the manufacturing of the novel low-water-peak fibres developed for optical telecommunications. The importance of collisional relaxation processes in the generation of the photoacoustic signal is reported in the particular case of CH4 detection in dry O2 and O2–N2 mixtures. The negative ...

The flourishing number of publications on the use of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) in forensic science denotes the enthusiasm and the attraction generated by this technology. IRMS has demonstrated its potential to distinguish chemically identical compounds coming from different sources. In addition, each laboratory has developed ...

A bioanalytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and ketorolac enantiomers in human plasma using two-dimensional liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Separation was first achieved in a reversed-phase C18 column by using a gradient solvent system consisting of 0.1% aqueous formic acid and acetonitrile (ACN). The effluent between 8.9 and 9.9 min, corresponding to phenacetin and racemic ketorolac peaks, was transferred to a polysaccharide-based chiral column ( ...

The complete vibrational spectra of crystalline C6H6 and C6D6 have been calculated for the different pressure-induced solid phases recently determined at 293 K up to 25 GPa, and compared to Raman scattering data. The normal coordinate analysis has been carried out by using intermolecular Buckingham-type atom–atom interactions and the intramolecular force field of the free molecule. Results of such frequency calculations are compared to experimental values at ambient pressure. The variation of the ...

Abstract This paper deals with the Bonus-Malus system obtained when the claims frequency is submitted to trend. This system is specified in the two particular cases of Poisson-Gamma and Poisson-Inverse Gaussian distributions. The theoretical results are checked on data issued from automobile insurance policies observed during three years.

Conventional MRI is a well-described, highly useful tool for the differential diagnosis of degenerative parkinsonian syndromes. Nevertheless, the observed abnormalities may only appear in late-stage disease. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can identify microstructural changes in brain tissue integrity and connectivity. The technique has proven value in the differential diagnosis of multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we performed a systematic ...

The importance of molecular relaxation in photoacoustic spectroscopy is discussed. The particular case of methane monitoring in dry oxygen using a 1.65-mm laser-based photoacoustic sensor is reported. The slow vibration-to-translation energy transfer occurring in this gas mixture results in a drastic reduction of the detection sensitivity.A quadratic response of the sensor to the methane concentration is also reported and explained by molecular relaxation effects.

Abstract We review the main studies on mesoscale water cycle from the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) project. The estimations of precipitation and evapotranspiration, which are the coupling terms between the atmosphere and the surface water cycles, are addressed. Advances in the evaluation of the various components of atmospheric and surface water budgets are reported, and the yearly surface budgets for the Benin and Niger AMMA mesoscale sites are given as examples. Thanks to an important research effort the last few years, inductive queries on set patterns and complete solvers which can evaluate them on large 0/1 data sets have been proved extremely useful. However, for many application domains, the raw data is numerical (matrices of real numbers whose dimensions denote objects and properties). Therefore, using efficient 0/1 mining techniques needs for tedious Boolean property encoding phases. This is, e.g., the case, when considering microarray data mining ...
