The Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emergent arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) responsible for congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) and a range of other congenital malformations. Evidence shows that ZIKV infects human neural progenitor cells (hNPCs) in the fetal brain, prompting inflammation and tissue damage/loss. Despite recent advances, little is known about the pathways involved in CZS pathogenesis. We performed a meta-analysis, gene ontology (GO), and pathway analysis of whole transcriptome studies with the aim ...

Abstract Introduction: Weakness of the lower limb muscles, which are the main impairments after stroke, is associated with reduced mobility and decreased performance in functional tasks. Therefore, the assessment of strength of these muscles is necessary, which is commonly assessed with portable dynamometry. Aims: To perform a literature review regarding the methods used to assess lower limb strength with portable dynamometry in subjects with stroke and to describe its investigated measurement properties ...

Mixed-mode I + II fracture characterization tests of steel-bonded joints were carried out with the dual actuator load apparatus using a previously developed data reduction scheme in order to obtain the fracture envelope. This test involves independent loading of the specimen arms of a clamped double cantilever beam, which allows for easy variation of the I + II mode mixity in fracture characterization through altering the applied displacement rates. Difficulties inherent to crack monitoring during its ...

Royal palm tree peroxidase (RPTP) is a very stable enzyme in regards to acidity, temperature, H2O2, and organic solvents. Thus, RPTP is a promising candidate for developing H2O2-sensitive biosensors for diverse applications in industry and analytical chemistry. RPTP belongs to the family of class III secretory plant peroxidases, which include horseradish peroxidase isozyme C, soybean and peanut peroxidases. Here we report the X-ray structure of native RPTP isolated from royal palm tree (Roystonea ...

Mitochondria are important integrators of cellular function and therefore affect the homeostatic balance of the cell. Besides their important role in producing adenosine triphosphate through oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondria are involved in the control of cytosolic calcium concentration, metabolism of key cellular intermediates, and Fe/S cluster biogenesis and contributed to programmed cell death. Mitochondria are also one of the major cellular producers of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Several ...

Abstract One of the strategies to improve the mechanical performance of bioactive glasses for load‐bearing implant devices has been the development of glass‐ceramic materials. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a highly bioactive, fully‐crystallized glass‐ceramic (Biosilicate®) of the system P 2 O 5 –Na 2 O–CaO–SiO 2 on various key parameters of in vitro osteogenesis. Surface characterization was carried out by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. ...

Experimental investigation on fatigue behavior of carbon–epoxy composite bonded joints under mode I loading was performed in this work. The objective is to evaluate the performance of different data reduction schemes to obtain the energy release rate (GI) in the fatigue crack growth (FCG) rate using double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. This law relates the evolution of the crack along time as a function of the energy release rate (GI) and is generally composed of three different regions: damage nucleation, ...

In this work, a novel way to indirectly store and produce H2 from ethanol was investigated using a two-step process based on the reduction of iron oxide followed by oxidation with H2O. The reduction of different iron oxides, i.e., Fe2O3, Fe3O4 and FeOOH, with ethanol to produce Feo was investigated. TPRe (Temperature Programmed Reactions) and Mössbauer and XRD analyses showed that ethanol reduces Fe2O3 sequentially to Fe3O4 at 350–500 °C, to Fe3O4/FeO at 500–600 °C and finally to Feo at 700 °C. In both human and experimental obesity, inflammatory damage to the hypothalamus plays an important role in the loss of the coordinated control of food intake and energy expenditure. Upon prolonged maintenance of increased body mass, the brain changes the defended set point of adiposity, and returning to normal weight becomes extremely difficult.
