Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a significant green technology for application in water purification. The application of Nb2O5 catalyst for the photodegradation of contaminants is few reported in the literature. Thus, the Nb2O5 catalyst was characterized by SEM, FTIR, surface area and charge surface density. This catalyst was applied to degrade indigo carmine dye, which was compared with degradation catalyzed by TiO2 and ZnO. Almost 100% of dye degradation occurred at 20, 45 and 90 min for TiO2, ...

Bipolar disorder (BD) has been associated with an immunologic imbalance shown by increased peripheral inflammatory markers. The underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon may include changes in circulating cells and differential activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Twenty-seven euthymic female subjects with BD type I (all medicated) and 24 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited in this study. Lymphocytes were isolated and stimulated in vitro to assess Th1/Th17/Th2 cytokines ( ...

Mounting evidence suggests a chronic pro-inflammatory state in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). Stress exposure is known to exacerbate several inflammatory conditions as well as psychiatric disorders. Here, we analyzed plasma levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and their soluble receptors to realistic acute psychosocial stress challenge in BD. Thirteen euthymic type 1 BD patients and 15 matched controls underwent the Trier Social Stress Test protocol (TSST). Blood samples were collected before ...

Hypertension induces left-ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) by mechanisms involving oxidative stress and unbalanced cardiac matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity. We hypothesized that β1-adrenergic receptor blockers with antioxidant properties (nebivolol) could reverse hypertension-induced LVH more effectively than conventional β1-blockers (metoprolol) when used at doses that exert similar antihypertensive effects. Two-kidney one-clip (2K1C) hypertension was induced in male Wistar rats. Six weeks after ...

Fibroblastic reticular cells (FRCs) determine the organization of lymphoid organs and control immune cell interactions. While the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying FRC differentiation in lymph nodes and the splenic white pulp have been elaborated to some extent, in Peyer's patches (PPs) they remain elusive. Using a combination of single-cell transcriptomics and cell fate mapping in advanced mouse models, we found that PP formation in the mouse embryo is initiated by an expansion of perivascular ...

Forage dry matter is the main source of nutrients in the diet of ruminant animals. Thus, this trait is evaluated in most forage breeding programs with the objective of increasing the yield. Novel solutions combining unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and computer vision are crucial to increase the efficiency of forage breeding programs, to support high-throughput phenotyping (HTP), aiming to estimate parameters correlated to important traits. Pinhão is the seed from Araucaria angustifolia. The composition of these seeds shows high carbohydrate levels (≅70% of dry matter) and low values of lipids, proteins and fibres. Starch in its original state usually does not attend industry demands, such as low retrogradation and high thermal stability. Therefore, its modification is an option to improve its properties and has more potential usage. An alternative to chemical modification is utilising enzymes such as α-amylase and glucoamylase, to enhance ...
