Summary Invasive, alien plants and pollinators have varying effects on their interaction partners, ranging from highly beneficial to strongly detrimental. To understand these contrasting impacts, we review the benefits and costs associated with plant–pollinator interactions and enquire as to how the presence of abundant invaders affects the benefit–cost balance. We provide a conceptual framework that predicts that mutualism shifts to antagonism when invaders increase disproportionally in abundance ...

A psychrotolerant marine bacterial strain, designated JUB59(T), was isolated from Antarctic surface seawater and classified as a new species of the genus Bizionia. Here, we present the first draft genome sequence for this genus, which suggests interesting features such as UV resistance, hydrolytic exoenzymes, and nitrogen metabolism.

The inactive truncated 52 Kilodaltons (kDa) Listeriolysin O (LLO) produced by a transposon Tn1545-induced Listeria monocytogenes non-hemolytic/avirulent mutant previously described (Gaillard et al. (1986) Infect. Immun. 52, 50-55), that lacks a 48 aminoacid fragment at the C-terminal end including the single cysteine residue essential for activity (Mengaud et al. (1988) Infect. Immun. 56, 766-772), bound to the SH-cytolysin membrane receptor cholesterol, as did the active 60 kDa toxin. These results indicate ...

The strong bizonal hemolysis on blood agar and the positive CAMP reaction with Rhodococcus equi denotes the production of two different cytolytic factors by Listeria ivanovii. One was characterized as a thiol-activated (SH) cytolysin of 61 kilodaltons and was termed ivanolysin O (ILO) since data suggested that it is different from listeriolysin O, the SH-cytolysin produced by Listeria monocytogenes. The other is a 27-kilodalton hemolytic sphingomyelinase C that was found to be the cytolytic factor ...

Summary The role of silage feeding in the origin of an epizootic of encephalitic listeriosis in a sheep flock was investigated by use of a new direct Listeria -selective isolation and enumeration medium, in combination with serotyping and phage typing. The silage contained high numbers (about 10 6 cells/g) of a L monocytogenes strain indistinguishable with respect to serovar and phagovar from that isolated from the brains of sick sheep. These results provided unambiguous bacteriologic evidence of ...

During a 1 year period, measurements of carboxylic acids and aldehydes were carried out in rainwater samples collected at nine different sites in NW Spain surrounding a thermal power plant in order to determine concentration levels and sources. In addition, certain major ions (Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) were also determined. Aldehyde and carboxylic acid concentration patterns and their effects on rainwater composition concerning temporal, seasonal and spatial variations were evaluated. ...

α-Klotho protein is a powerful predictor of the aging process and lifespan. Although lowered circulating soluble α-Klotho levels have been observed in aged non-healthy individuals, no specific reference values across a wide range of ages and sex using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are available for larger cohorts of healthy individuals. The present analytical cross-sectional study was aimed to establish the reference values of soluble α-Klotho serum levels in healthy adults by age ...

Thionins, which are high‐sulphur polypeptides present in the endosperm of wheat and related species, have been found to prevent growth and to inhibit macromolecular synthesis in cultured mammalian cells. Baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells were markedly more sensitive to thionins than the other cell lines tested (monkey CV1, mouse L, human HeLa). A thionin concentration of 5 μ/ml (1 μM) completely blocked translation in BHK cells. It was later found that omission of both calcium and magnesium ions from ...

The evaluation of the characteristics of the fetal stomach should be part of every routine prenatal ultrasound after 11 weeks. A position that has not been previously described in the literature is the stomach in contact with the bladder. We describe 6 cases with the ultrasonographic finding of the stomach in contact with the bladder, all of them in fetuses with left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Even though the reasons for this striking position of the stomach are not clear, our series ...

Salt crystallization is a major agent of deterioration in buildings, especially important when belonging to a city's cultural heritage. The study of this process is therefore essential to understand the decay evolution and to establish a correct preservation protocol to avoid future interventions. KNO3 is a salt found commonly associated to other salts in weathered areas of buildings. In order to recognize the presence of this salt without sampling, the crystallization of KNO3 was assessed by means ...

Introduction: Coalition resection can restore motion, and improve pain in patients with talocalcaneal coalitions (TCCs) and an aligned foot. However, there is some debate regarding appropriate treatment of patients with associated valgus deformity. The purpose of this study was to present the outcomes and complications following surgical reconstruction, with or without coalition resection, in a series of patients with TCC and severe hindfoot valgus. Methods: Thirteen consecutive patients (14 feet) ...

Immunosuppression (IS) and autoimmune disease (AD) are prevalent in patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but their impact on its clinical course is unknown. The renin-angiotensin (Ang) system (RAS) is a complex hormonal system present locally in several tissues such as cardiovascular organs. RAS deregulation through overactivation of the classical arm [Ang-converting enzyme (ACE)/Ang-II/Ang type 1 receptor (AT1R)] has been linked to the development of cardiovascular diseases and activation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathways. The ER stress is a condition that, if unresolved, might lead to heart failure, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and endothelial ...

A fibreoptic endoscope procedure for non-surgical deep intrauterine insemination in non-sedated sows has been reported. However, the endoscope is an expensive and fragile instrument, and is unsuitable for use under field conditions.
