Because of previous reports of a possible correlation between echinocytogenesis and muscular dystrophies, we investigated the time-dependent development of echinocytes in the blood of normal subjects, patients, and healthy carries of Duchenne dystrophy. There was a quantitatively significant increase of echinocytes in patients and carriers.

Abstract The University of São Paulo Twin Panel (Painel USP de Gêmeos), based at the Institute of Psychology of the University of São Paulo, started formally in 2017. Our registry is new, but in only two years of formal existence, it comprises a volunteer sample of 4826 registered individuals (98% twins and 2% higher-order multiples), recruited at the University of São Paulo and by social media campaigns. Our main aim is to conduct and promote research with twins on psychological processes and behavior. ...

This study concerns attachment in adult twins and siblings from a psychological perspective. Our objectives were to translate from English to Portuguese and adapt the 16-items Attachment Features and Functions Measure (AFF) to Brazilian population and to compare the attachment hierarchy of monozygotic (MZ), dizygotic (DZ) twins and nontwin siblings (NT). The Brazilian version of the AFF was answered by adults, of whom 132 had twin siblings and 98 had non-twin siblings. Only one representative of a twinship ...

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of cryopreservation of goat preantral follicles, in situ and isolated, using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethylene glycol (EG). Follicles were cryopreserved and cultured in vitro, and follicle viability was assessed by Trypan Blue staining before and after culture. The viability of follicles cryopreserved in situ using 1.5 M DMSO (64% ± 5.3 and 60% ± 7.4) or 3.0 M EG (58% ± 3.7 and 45% ± 4.4) after days 1 and 5, respectively, of culture was lower ( ...

Premature ovarian insufficiency has the following causes: genetic, autoimmune, metabolic, infectious, and iatrogenic dysfunctions (including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery). However, premature ovarian insufficiency remains without a definite cause in a substantial number of cases. This article describes GAPO syndrome in association with premature ovarian insufficiency, as well as a novel ANTXR1 gene mutation. Histopathological study of the ovaries of a woman with hypergonadotropic hypogonadism ...

The present work has investigated the morphological and ultrastructural changes occurring during degeneration of goat preantral follicles preserved in vitro and showed quantitative data about the distribution of follicular degeneration types in the control and after preservation in coconut water solution or Braun–Collins solution at different temperatures (4, 20 or 39°C) and incubation times (4, 12 or 24 h). At the slaughterhouse, the pair of ovaries of each animal was divided into 19 fragments. One ...

Human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes cannot fully explain the histological diagnosis of women with glandular abnormalities detected by cervical smear. Thus, this study was designed to analyze the distribution of HPV-16 and HPV-18 variants in women referred because of atypical glandular cells and adenocarcinoma in situ in their cervical smears and its association with histological results. Twenty-four women with HPV-16 and 6 with HPV-18, selected from 160 women with cervical smears suggestive of glandular ...

This study describes the morphological, morphometric and ultrastructural characteristics of the Amazonian manatee Trichechus inunguis (Natterer, 1883) spermatozoon. The spermatozoa were obtained from a urine sample of an adult T. inunguis kept in captivity. The spermatozoa were analyzed by light and transmission electron microscopy. The head of Amazonian manatee spermatozoa had a flat oval shape and a well distinguishable midpiece. The mean dimensions of the spermatozoa were: head length, 7.49 ± 0. ...

Abstract We describe a species of the exclusively Neotropical dorylomorph ant genus Leptanilloides (Leptanilloidinae), Leptanilloides atlantica sp. nov., based on workers collected in the Atlantic Forest, São Paulo, south-eastern Brazil. The 11 species of Leptanilloides described are known from relatively high altitudes in western America (from the Andes foothills in Bolivia to Sierra Morena in Mexico). The discovery of a Leptanilloides species in south-eastern Brazil represents a significant range ...

A population of Parides ascanius butterflies was studied for 12 months in Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil. The population size was approximately 10–20 individuals with a maximum of 50 individuals. Sex ratio was biased, with males dominating in most months. The residence time was 12.7 ± 10.1 days for males, with a maximum of 28 days. Males travel distances of up to 400 m, but most individuals were recaptured within 150 to 250 m of their original capture site. Our results show that P. ascanius has a relatively ...

Abstract Cryopreservation of ovarian tissue followed by transplantation represents a strategy to restore ovarian function and fertility. Stress from cryopreservation-thawing processes can lead to alterations and/or damage to mitochondrial structure and functionality. High resolution respirometry and histological analysis were used to evaluate the effect of cryopreservation and transplantation on ovarian tissue. Four different conditions were performed: Fresh non-transplanted tissue, Fresh transplanted ...

Magnetic nanoparticles can be used in different areas of biology. It is therefore important to know the effects of such nanomaterials on germline cells as they may traverse the blood-testis barrier. This work aimed to evaluate the response of bull sperm after exposure to a magnetic fluid containing DMSA-coated maghemite nanoparticles (MNP-DMSA) in order to determine nanotoxicity. Bull sperm was incubated with MNP-DMSA at final concentrations of 0.06, 0.03 or 0.015 mg Fe/mL. Sperm kinetics, plasma ...

The degeneration rate of ovarian preantral follicles in goats, and the distribution in the follicular classes (primordial, primary or secondary) was assessed. Ovaries from adult goats were collected at a local slaughterhouse. To evaluate the morphology of the caprine preantral follicles in situ, one fragment from each ovary was fixed individually in Carnoy for 12 h, sectioned serially at a thickness of 7 μm and stained with Periodic Acid Shiff-hematoxylin. Preantral follicles were then classified ...

Cryptorchidism is the most frequent anomaly in sexual development in male children. The ideal diagnostic method to investigate patients with nonpalpable testes has not been found to date, but many methods have been described. Between 1983 and 1991, 45 patients 2 to 35 years old underwent laparoscopy as a diagnostic method in investigation of nonpalpable testis, and our first laparoscopic pediatric orchiectomy was performed. Of 45 patients studied, 37 (82%) underwent exploration, and a complete correlation ...
