Introduction An ongoing outbreak of yellow fever (YF) has been reported in Brazil with 1261 confirmed cases and 409 deaths since July 2017. To date, there is no specific treatment available for YF. Recently published papers describing in vitro and animal models suggest a potential effect of antiviral drugs (approved for the treatment of hepatitis virus) against flaviviruses, including YF. The primary aim of this study is to analyse the effect of sofosbuvir on viral kinetics and clinical outcomes among ...

Schistosomiasis continues to be a significant public health problem that affects 200 million people worldwide. This is one of the most important parasitic diseases, and one whose effective control is unlikely in the absence of a vaccine. In this study, we have isolated a cDNA clone encoding the Schistosoma mansoni Sm21.6 protein that has 45% and 44% identity with Sm22.6 and Sj21.7 EF-hand containing antigens, respectively. Confocal microscopy analysis revealed that Sm21.6 is a membrane-associated ...

Intrasellar pressure (ISP) measurement technique has recently opened a new line of research in neuroendocrinology. The absolute and mean ISP values were investigated in 25 patients consecutively operated at the Brasilia University Hospital (DF). These data were correlated with serum prolactin levels, number of visual quadrant affected, tumor size, quality of life (measured through the SF-36 scale) and graded headache (measured through the HIT-6 scale). No correlation was observed. The p values were ...

The effects of azadirachtin and ecdysone on the Trypanosoma cruzi population in the Rhodnius prolixus gut were investigated. T. cruzi were rarely found in the gut compartments of azadirachtin-treated larvae. High parasite numbers were observed in the stomach of the control and ecdysone groups until 10 days after treatment and in the small intestine and rectum until 25 days after treatment. High percentages of round forms developed in the stomachs of all groups, whereas azadirachtin blocked the development ...

Abstract BACKGROUND Alternative splicing of the osteopontin ( opn , spp 1) gene generates three protein splicing isoforms (OPN‐SI), designated as OPNa, OPNb, and OPNc, which have demonstrated specific roles in different tumor models. This work aims to investigate the roles of each OPN‐SI in prostate cancer (PCa) progression by using in vivo and in vitro functional assays. METHODS The expression levels of OPN‐SI in prostate cell lines were analyzed by qRT‐PCR. PC‐3 was stably transfected with expression ...

Identifying and making use of ecological indicators becomes an essential task in the conservation of tropical systems, mainly in fragmented landscapes where land use intensification and habitat loss are confounding factors in the detection of species’ responses to human-caused disturbance. We aimed to analyze the importance of anthropogenic land use and fragmentation-related effects on dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) persistence according to the interior–exterior non-linear gradient (forest + ...

The guidelines on allergic rhinitis aim to update knowledge about the disease and care for affected patients. The initiative called "Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma", initially published in 2001 and updated in 2008 and 2010, has been very successful in disseminating information and evidence, as well as providing a classification of severity and proposing a systemized treatment protocol. Livestock has been recognized as a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Prevalence of resistance has been associated with herd size and intensification of animal production systems. Brazil is one of the emergent hotspots of bacterial resistance, which is also associated with animal husbandry. This study aimed to evaluate the resistance profile of pathogens that cause subclinical mastitis and the relationship between resistance status at farm level and different production systems. Milk samples ...

The high costs of bioplastics' production may hinder their commercialization. Development of new processes with high yields and in biorefineries can enhance diffusion of these materials. This work evaluated the production of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) from the combination of milled corn starchy fraction hydrolysate and crude glycerol as substrates by the strain Cupriavidus necator LPB 1421. After optimization steps, maximum accumulation of 62 % of PHB was obtained, which represents 11.64 g.L-1 and productivity ...

In this paper we present an algorithm for thresholding images of historical documents. The main objective is to generate high quality monochromatic images in order to make them easily accessible through the Internet. Our new algorithm is based on two definitions of entropy: Shannon’ s classical concept and a variation called Tsallis entropy. For historical documents, our method proved to be more efficient than several known thresholding algorithms by several measures.

In Brazil, dengue epidemics erupt sporadically throughout the country and it is unclear if outbreaks may initiate a sustainable transmission cycle. There are few studies evaluating the ability of Brazilian Aedes aegypti populations to transmit dengue virus (DENV). Hair coloring is widely used by women and men either to change their natural hair color or to delay the onset of gray hair. Oxidative dyes may damage the hair, since chemical and physical procedures are involved to alter the structure hair and consequently, alterations in its mechanical and of surface properties. Brazil reported the majority of the dengue cases in Americas during the last two decades, where the occurrence of human dengue cases is exclusively attributed to the Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Linnaeus). Nowadays, other recognized Dengue virus (DENV) vector in Asian countries, Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse), has been detected in more than half of the 5565 Brazilian municipalities. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of, and determine the Ae. albopictus' dynamics ...
