Monitoring the internal loads acting in a total knee prosthesis (TKP) is fundamental aspect to improve their design. One of the main benefits of this improvement is the longer duration of the tibial inserts. In this work, an electromagnetic energy harvesting system, which is implantable in a TKP, is presented. This is conceived for powering a future implantable system that is able to monitor the loads (and, possibly, other parameters) that could influence the working conditions of a TKP in real-time. ...

We measured the changes in pleural surface pressure (delta Ppl) in the area of apposition of the rib cage to the diaphragm (Aap) in anesthetized dogs during spontaneous breathing, inspiratory efforts after airway occlusion at functional residual capacity, and phrenic stimulation. Intact dogs were in supine or lateral posture; partially eviscerated dogs were in lateral posture. delta Ppl,ap often differed significantly from changes in abdominal pressure (delta Pab); sometimes they differed in sign (except ...

During the 10–60 min period: (a) with Ringer Na:su+ and Cl− decreased (P < 0.01) along with an iso-osmotic liquid absorption, (b) with disulfonic-stilbene (0.1 mM), amiloride (0.7 ...

Apparent permeability to albumin (P(alb)) was measured with (125)I-albumin in specimens of rabbit parietal pericardium from lumen to interstitium (L-I) and from interstitium to lumen (I-L). With albumin concentration (C(alb)) 0.5%, P(alb) (x 10(-5) cm/s) L-I at 37 degrees C was 0.172 +/- 0.019 SE; it decreased to 0.092 +/- 0.022 I-L at 37 degrees C, 0.089 +/- 0.021 L-I at 12 degrees C, and 0.084 +/- 0.018 I-L at 12 degrees C. These findings provide evidence for an active transport L-I, likely transcytosis. With C(alb) ...

We determined in anesthetised rabbits the net rate of liquid absorption (NRLA) from Ringer or 1% albumin-Ringer hydrothoraces with the β-blocker propranolol (or nadolol) or the β-agonist terbutaline. The β-blocker raduced NRLA by 38% in 2 ml Ringer hydrothoraces, and did not change it in 2 ml albumin-Ringer hydrothoraces; hence, with β-blocker NRLA became similar in both kinds of hydrothorax (0.31 ± 0.02 ml/h). Terbutaline decreased NRLA by 25% in 2 ml Ringer hydrothoraces, and increased it by 29% in ...

Previous indirect findings have suggested the occurrence of solute‐coupled liquid absorption from the pleural space, consistent with Na(+)‐K(+)‐ATPase on the interstitial side plus a Na(+)‐H+ and CI(‐)‐HCO3‐ double exchange on the luminal side of the pleural mesothelium. To assess whether Na(+)‐glucose cotransport also operates on the luminal side, the relationship between net rate of liquid absorption from the right pleural space (Jnet) and volume of liquid injected into this space (0.5, 1 or 2 ml) ...

The β-agonist terbutaline increases the net rate of liquid absorption from hydrothoraces with albumin-Ringer solution: since β-agonists decrease lymphatic drainage, the effect of terbutaline seems due to an increase in solute-coupled liquid absorption, (Zocchi et al. 1994 Respir. Physiol. 97: 347–356). In this research we determined in anesthetized rabbits the rate of volume change in albumin-Ringer hydrothoraces of different size with amiloride plus terbutaline, and compared it with that previously ...

Successive applications of liquid swine waste to the soil can increase the contents of total organic carbon and nutrients and change acidity-related soil chemical properties. However, little information is available on the effects of swine waste application in solid form, as of swine deep-litter. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether N-acetylcysteine (NAC) administered alone or in combination with deferoxamine (DFX), significantly reduced the inflammatory infiltration and oxidative damage in the lungs of rats exposed to coal dust. Forty-two male Wistar rats (200-250 g) were exposed to the coal dust (3mg/0.5 mL saline, 3 days/week, for 3 weeks) by intratracheal instillation. The animals ...
