Vitamin A modulates inflammatory status, iron metabolism and erythropoiesis. Given that these factors modulate the expression of the hormone hepcidin (Hamp), we investigated the effect of vitamin A deficiency on molecular biomarkers of iron metabolism, the inflammatory response and the erythropoietic system. Five groups of male Wistar rats were treated: control (AIN-93G), the vitamin A-deficient (VAD) diet, the iron-deficient (FeD) diet, the vitamin A- and iron-deficient (VAFeD) diet or the diet with ...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the major cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The risk to develop HCC increases with the severity of liver inflammation and hepatic fibrosis. It is believed that a balance between the releases of pro‐ and anti‐inflammatory cytokines will determine the clinical course of HCV and the risk to develop HCC. The inteleukin‐10 (IL‐10) and the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF‐α) play key roles in the Th1 and Th2 balance during the inflammatory response against HCV. The aim of ...

BACKGROUND: In patients with supraclavicular injuries of the brachial plexus, the suprascapular nerve (SSN) is frequently reconstructed with a sural nerve graft coapted to C5. As the C5 cross-sectional diameter exceeds the graft diameter, inadequate positioning of the graft is possible. OBJECTIVE: To identify a specific area within the C5 proximal stump that contains the SSN axons and to determine how this area could be localized by the nerve surgeon, we conducted a microanatomic study of the intraplexal ...

The employment of smart meters for energy consumption monitoring is essential for planning and management of power generation systems. In this context, forecasting energy consumption is a valuable asset for decision making, since it can improve the predictability of forthcoming demand to energy providers. In this work, we propose a data-driven ensemble that combines five single well-known models in the forecasting literature: a statistical linear autoregressive model and four artificial neural networks: ( ...

Dormancy-Associated gene 1/Auxin Repressed protein (DRM1/ARP) genes are responsive to hormones involved in defense response to biotic stress, such as salicylic acid (SA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA), as well as to hormones that regulate plant growth and development, including auxins. These characteristics suggest that this gene family may be an important link between the response to pathogens and plant growth and development. In this investigation, the DRM1/ARP genes were identified in the genome of ...

The habenula (Hb) is a phylogenetically old epithalamic structure differentiated into two nuclear complexes, the medial (MHb) and lateral habenula (LHb). After decades of search for a great unifying function, interest in the Hb resurged when it was demonstrated that LHb plays a major role in the encoding of aversive stimuli ranging from noxious stimuli to the loss of predicted rewards. Consistent with a role as an anti-reward center, aberrant LHb activity has now been identified as a key factor in ...
