This paper reports the assessment of chemical profile and antibacterial activity of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) roots extracts using supercritical CO2 as solvent. The effects of the supercritical extraction conditions on the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of the extracts obtained were evaluated and compared with essential oil of ginger obtained from hydrodistillation technique. The extractions using CO2 were performed in a laboratory scale unit at pressures of 10.0 MPa, 17. ...

Epilepsy is a frequent and severe feature of Menkes disease (MD) but only few studies described the long-term evolution of these children. We report a series of 28 epileptic MD patients, with clinical characteristics, EEG abnormalities, brain malformations and long-term outcome. EEG, clinical characteristics and neuroimaging features in 28 MD patients were analyzed at the onset of epilepsy and after long-term follow-up (at least 4 years). We subdivided the patients into two groups: Group 1, 16 patients ...

Summary: Purpose: A locus for benign familial convulsions (BFICs) has been recently mapped on chromosome 19q12–13.1 by studying five families of Italian descent. The main goal of this study was to investigate the role of this locus in a set of seven newly identified families with at least three affected cases. Methods: Five polymorphic microsatellite markers covering the BFIC locus on chromosome 19q have been typed, and parametric linkage analysis has been performed to analyze the segregation of ...

Abstract Notwithstanding several research efforts in the past years, robust and replicable molecular signatures for autism spectrum disorders from peripheral blood remain elusive. The available literature on blood transcriptome in ASD suggests that through accurate experimental design it is possible to extract important information on the disease pathophysiology at the peripheral level. Here we exploit the availability of a resource for molecular biomarkers in ASD, the Italian Autism Network (ITAN) ...

Unlike age-matched men, premenopausal women benefit from cardiovascular protection. Estrogens protect against apoptosis of endothelial cells (ECs), one of the hallmarks of endothelial dysfunction leading to cardiovascular disorders, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. The inflammatory cytokine TNFα causes EC apoptosis while dysregulating the Notch pathway, a major contributor to EC survival. We have previously reported that 17β-estradiol (E2) treatment activates Notch ...

In 1997, a locus for benign familial infantile convulsions (BFIC) was mapped to chromosome 19q. Further data suggested that this locus is not involved in all families with BFIC. In the present report, we studied eight Italian families and mapped a novel BFIC locus within a 0.7-cM interval of chromosome 2q24, between markers D2S399 and D2S2330. A maximum multipoint HLOD score of 6.29 was obtained under the hypothesis of genetic heterogeneity. Furthermore, the clustering of chromosome 2q24–linked families ...

Severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy (SMEI) has been long suspected to have a genetic origin. Recently mutations in the gene encoding a voltage-gated α-1 sodium channel subunit—SCN1A—have been identified as a common cause of SMEI. Moreover, a mutation in the gene encoding the γ2 subunit of the GABAA receptor—GABRG2—has been described in a GEFS+ family with a member affected by SMEI. In order to further investigate the role of GABRG2 in the pathogenesis of SMEI, we have screened for mutations 53 SMEI ...

Abstract While the genetics of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been intensively studied, resulting in the identification of over 100 putative risk genes, the epigenetics of ASD has received less attention, and results have been inconsistent across studies. We aimed to investigate the contribution of DNA methylation (DNAm) to the risk of ASD and identify candidate biomarkers arising from the interaction of epigenetic mechanisms with genotype, gene expression, and cellular proportions. We performed ...
