Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on the following purposes: first, to identify/analyze the main factors that hinder quality improvement programs’ implementation in SMEs, and second, to test if the level of importance attributed to those factors differ according to firms’ dimension. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was mailed to 600 Portuguese SME randomly selected. Out of the sample, a total of 95 questionnaires were completed and returned, performing a final response rate around ...

Although much has been written about total quality management (TQM) and employee involvement, little attention has been paid to individual-level determinants of employees' involvement in such a context. Moreover, studies highlight differences between employers' and employees' perceptions of human resources practices, especially in what empowerment concerns. The main purpose of this research was to analyse potential differences in the perception of empowerment in employees without leadership duties ...

Purpose To test whether a single or composite set of parameters evaluated with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), representing retinal capillary closure, can predict non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) staging according to the gold standard ETDRS grading scheme. Methods 105 patients with diabetes, either without retinopathy or with different degrees of retinopathy (NPDR up to ETDRS grade 53), were prospectively evaluated using swept-source OCTA (SS-OCTA, PlexElite, Carl Zeiss ...

Naringenin (NG) is a flavonoid with many bioactive properties, however, its bitterness limits its use in foods. It is known that complex formation with proteins can mask this undesirable sensory property. Therefore, a trained panel evaluated the effect of bovine lactoferrin (LF) on NG bitterness using time-intensity analysis. LF reduced the maximum bitterness intensity and overall bitterness perception for NG by 27% and 33%, respectively. Isothermal titration nanocalorimetry (ITC), molecular docking ( ...

This paper describes a new generic text-to-speech synthesis system, developed in the scope of the Tecnovoz Project. Although it was primarily targeted at speech synthesis in European Portuguese, its modular architecture and flexible components allows its use for different languages. We also provide a survey on the development of the language resources needed by the TTS.

Background An aortoenteric fistula is an abnormal communication between the aorta and the bowel lumen. It is usually caused by previous aortic surgery and involves the duodenum (ADF) in most cases. The treatment of this high-mortality condition is based on the correction of enteric and vascular defects. However, enteric repair indications and impact are unknown. Objective We sought to characterize the surgical procedures available for duodenal repair in ADF and estimate their impact in mortality. ...

The application of ubiquitous computing has increased in recent years, especially due to the development of technologies such as mobile computing, more accurate sensors, and specific protocols for the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the trends in this area of research is the use of context awareness. In agriculture, the context involves the environment, for example, the conditions found inside a greenhouse. Recently, a series of studies have proposed the use of sensors to monitor production and/ ...

Caffeine is a molecule with bioactive properties related to increased mental performance. Its use in food products is limited by its bitterness and self-association behavior. The complex formed by β-lactoglobulin and caffeine was characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry, and molecular docking. Fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that β-lactoglobulin interacted with caffeine to form a 1:1 stoichiometric complex. Isothermal titration calorimetry characterization ...

In this study we investigate the attractiveness of Portugal as a tourist destination from the perspective of Czech tour operators. Tour operators were selected as the target population because they represent an important source of information about a destination and can significantly influence the decision of potential tourists about a holiday destination. One of the important findings of this research is that weak promotion and financial demands are perceived as the main reasons why many Czech ...

The present study is the first major assessment of the marine decapod fauna of Ceará, northeastern Brazil, since contributions of J. Fausto-Filho in the 1960s-1970s. A fully updated checklist of all decapod crustaceans occurring in marine and estuarine habitats of Ceará is provided, based on literature records, specimens held in two carcinological collections of the Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), and material collected mainly by the authors between 2011 and 2014. This paper proposes a practical approach for profit-based unit commitment (PBUC) with emission limitations. Under deregulation, unit commitment has evolved from a minimum-cost optimisation problem to a profit-based optimisation problem. However, as a consequence of growing environmental concern, the impact of fossil-fuelled power plants must be considered, giving rise to emission limitations. The simultaneous address of the profit with the emission is taken into account in our practical approach ...

Arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) are structurally complex plasma membrane and cell wall proteoglycans that are implicated in diverse developmental processes, including plant sexual reproduction. Male gametogenesis (pollen grain development) is fundamental to plant sexual reproduction. The role of two abundant, pollen-specific AGPs, AGP6, and AGP11, have been investigated here. The pollen specificity of these proteoglycans suggested that they are integral to pollen biogenesis and their strong sequence ...

In this study, we screened for major variations of sialyltransferases and fucosyltransferases involved in the synthesis and regulation of sialyl Lewis x and sialyl Lewis a epitopes in gastrointestinal carcinoma cells. Our results show that expression of ST3Gal IV in several gastrointestinal cell lines is correlated with the expression of sialyl Lewis x at the cell surface. ST3Gal IV overexpressed ...

Increased fat mass, particularly abdominal fat mass, is associated with poor metabolic profiles and an increase in cardiovascular risk factors. Abstract This paper is on the problem of short‐term hydro scheduling, particularly concerning head‐dependent reservoirs under competitive environment. We propose a new nonlinear optimization method to consider hydroelectric power generation as a function of water discharge and also of the head. Head‐dependency is considered on short‐term hydro scheduling in order to obtain more realistic and feasible results. The proposed method has been applied successfully to solve a case study based on one of ...

In this paper, we propose a novel nonlinear approach to solve the short-term hydro scheduling problem under deregulation, considering head-dependency. The actual size of hydro systems, the continuous reservoir dynamics and constraints, the hydraulic coupling of cascaded hydro systems, and the complexity associated with head-sensitive hydroelectric power generation still pose a real challenge to the modelers. These concerns are all accounted for in our approach. Results from a case study based on ...

Abstract This paper provides an approach to short‐term scheduling of thermal units, designed to simultaneously address the economic issue of the fuel cost incurred on the commitment of the units and the environmental consideration due to emission allowance trading. The simultaneous address of the fuel cost with the emission is modeled by a multi‐objective optimization problem, which is solved by a combination of the weighted sum method with the ε ‐constraining method. A numerical example for different ...

This paper is on the problem of short-term hydro scheduling (STHS), particularly concerning head-sensitive reservoirs under competitive environment. We propose a novel method, based on nonlinear programming (NLP), for optimising power generation efficiency. The main contribution of this paper is that the maximum water discharge, thus giving the maximum power generation, is also considered ...

Unlike other agents used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, metformin has been shown to reduce mortality in obese patients. It is therefore being increasingly used in higher doses. The major concern of many physicians is a possible risk of lactic acidosis. The reported frequency of metformin related lactic acidosis is 0.05 per 1000 patient-years; some authors advocate that this rate is equal in those patients not taking metformin. We present two case reports of metformin-associated lactic ...

Assessment of the seismic performance of structures is still a challenge. Historic masonry structures exhibit peculiar properties (low tensile strength and lack of box behavior) that make the task of the analyst even more difficult. This article provides a review of the seismic analysis of masonry structures without box behavior. Different methods of ...
