Tuberculosis is an ancient infectious disease caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis that is still nowadays afflicting humans all over the world. It causes ill-health for 10 million people each year. Tuberculosis (TB) has been the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS. In recent years, infection with HIV represents a major risk factor predisposing for infection and TB is the most common cause of AIDS-related death. Despite the treatment of HIV-associated ...

Optimising the selection of HER2-targeted regimens by identifying subsets of HER2-positive breast cancer (BC) patients who need more or less therapy remains challenging. We analysed BC samples before and after treatment with 1 cycle of trastuzumab according to the response to trastuzumab.Gene expression profiles of pre- and post-treatment tumour samples from 17 HER2-positive BC patients were analysed on the Illumina platform. Tumour-associated immune pathways and blood counts were analysed with regard ...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents the most common arrhythmia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). As in the general population, in CKD patients AF is associated with an increased risk of thromboembolism and stroke. However, CKD patients, especially those on renal replacement therapy (RRT), also exhibit an increased risk of bleeding, especially from the gastrointestinal tract. Oral anticoagulation is the most effective form of thromboprophylaxis in patients with AF presenting increased risk ...

According to the recent definition proposed by the Consensus conference on Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative Group, the term cardio-renal syndrome (CRS) has been used to define different clinical conditions in which heart and kidney dysfunction overlap. Type 1 CRS (acute cardio- renal syndrome) is characterized by acute worsening of cardiac function leading to AKI (5, 6) in the setting of active cardiac disease such as ADHF, while type - 2 CRS occurs in a setting of chronic heart disease. Type 3 CRS ...

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) has been associated with anemia only in dialysis patients with severe hyperparathyroidism. Whether an association between PTH and hemoglobin also exists in patients with chronic kidney disease not on dialysis (CKD-patients) is still unclear. In this study we evaluated the association between PTH and hemoglobin in CKD-patients without severe secondary hyperparathyroidism. Hospitalized patients and outpatients (N = 979) were retrospectively evaluated and categorized according ...

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has been recognized as a noninvasive and simple technique for the determination of DW in HD patients. This study was designed to develop and validate BIA prediction equations for DW in HD patients. Fibril deposit formation of amyloid β-protein (Aβ) in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Increasing evidence suggests that toxicity is linked to diffusible Aβ oligomers, which have been found in soluble brain extracts of AD patients, rather than to insoluble fibers. Here we report a study of the toxicity of two distinct forms of recombinant Aβ small oligomers and fibrillar aggregates to simulate the action of diffusible Aβ oligomers and amyloid plaques on neuronal cells. Different ...

Here, we report results obtained by exploiting the proteins' natural tendency to self-organize in 3D network, for the production of new material based on BSA for medical application. In particular, at five different pH values the conformational and structural changes of the BSA during all the steps of the thermal aggregation and gelation have been ...

Summary Increasing evidence indicates that Alzheimer’s disease, one of the most diffused aging pathologies, and diabetes may be related. Here, we demonstrate that insulin signalling protects LAN5 cells by amyloid‐β42 (Aβ)‐induced toxicity. Aβ affects both activation of insulin receptors and the levels of phospho‐Akt, a critical signalling molecule in this pathway. In contrast, oxidative stress induced by Aβ can be antagonized by active Akt that, in turn, inhibits Foxo3a, a pro‐apoptotic transcription ...

Locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is a heterogeneous group of tumors where a risk-adapted therapeutic strategy is needed. Short-course radiotherapy (SCRT) is a more convenient option for LARC patients than preoperative long-course RT plus capecitabine. A distinctive feature of Alzheimer's disease is the deposition of amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) in senile or diffuse plaques. The 42 residue beta-peptide (Abeta42) is the predominant form found in plaques. In the present work we report a high-yield expression and purification method of production of a recombinant Abeta42. The purified recombinant peptide shows characteristics similar to the synthetic human peptide. Different size aggregates, either small oligomers or larger aggregates, were obtained ...

Gene transfer represents an important advance in the treatment of both genetic and acquired diseases. In this article, the suitability of cationically modified solid-lipid nanoparticles (SLN) as a nonviral vector for gene delivery was investigated, in order to obtain stable materials able to condense RNA. Cationic SLN were produced by microemulsion using Compritol ATO 888 as matrix lipid, Pluronic F68 as tenside, and dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DDAB) as cationic lipid. The resulting particles ...

Recently, mitochondrial transplantation has been advised as an innovative and attractive strategy to transfer and replace damaged mitochondria. Results Synaptosome preparation was ...

We construct the creation operator of a vortex using the methods developed for monopoles. The vacuum expectation value of this operator is interpreted as a disorder parameter describing vortex condensation and is studied numerically on a lattice in SU(2) gauge theory. The result is that vortices behave in the vacuum in a similar way to monopoles. The disorder parameter is different from zero in the confined phase, and vanishes at the deconfining phase transition. We discuss this behaviour in terms ...
