To assess the wolf‐habitat relationship on the home range scale (i.e., third order selection), we developed a resource selection probability function (RSPF) through a multiple logistic regression model based on the winter travel routes of a wolf pack in the northern Apennines, Italy (1991–95). Both travel routes (240 km) and habitat variables were mapped at 1:10 000 scale, digitised as Geographical Information System (GIS) layers, and overlaid with a 100×100 m pixel grid to census all used and unused ...

Abstract Aim To ascertain a delay in attendances to the emergency department (ED) during 2020 lockdown. Methods Area‐based cohort study on paediatric (0‐15 years) attendances resulting in hospital admission in Tuscany, Italy, in February‐May 2020, and the corresponding periods in 2018‐19. We analysed times from symptom onset to arrival, the odds of arriving late (>90th centile of time) and paediatricians’ judgements of a late presentation by logistic models. Results As expected, ED attendance fell sharply (− ...

Rate constants for guanine rotation about the Pt−N7 bond in (R,S,S,R)-Me2DABPtG2 complexes (Me2DAB = N,N'-dimethyl-2,3-diaminobutane; G = 9-EtG, 3'-GMP, and 5'-GMP) were evaluated from line-shape analysis of H8 resonances. Three diastereomers, two in head-to-tail (ΔHT and ΛHT) and one in head-to-head (HH) conformations, exist in equilibrium in solution. The two guanines are equivalent in ΔHT and ΛHT conformers and nonequivalent in the HH form; therefore, four rate constants (kΔHT, kΛHT, kHHs, and kHHd; sub- ...

Abstract Background Heterogeneous mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic are documented in the general population. Such heterogeneity has not been systematically assessed in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). To identify distinct patterns of the pandemic impact and their predictors in ASD/NDD youth, we focused on pandemic-related changes in symptoms and access to services. Methods Using a naturalistic observational design, we assessed ...

It is well known that the early removal of basal leaves is a viticultural practice adopted to improve the exposure of clusters to direct sunlight and UV radiation and increase the phenolic compounds and anthocyanin concentration in the berries. The aim of this work was to study the influence of early basal leaf removal on Aglianico wines produced in the Apulia region (southern Italy) during three consecutive seasons. Three vine treatments were carried out, where 100% of the cluster-zone leaves on ...

Neonatal jaundice might lead to severe clinical consequences. Measurement of bilirubin in samples is interfered by hemolysis. Over a method-depending cut-off value of measured hemolysis, bilirubin value is not accepted and a new sample is required for evaluation although this is not always possible, especially with newborns and cachectic oncological patients. When usage of different methods, less prone to interferences, is not feasible an alternative recovery method for analytical significance of ...

The splanchnic pharmacodynamic effects of the drugs used for the treatment of hemorrhagic complications of portal hypertension were poorly clarified until some years ago. The introduction of Doppler ultrasound provided a powerful tool to investigate such hemodynamic effects and brought new insights in this field. The present article reviews the pharmacodynamics of the substances used in the treatment of portal hypertension, with particular regard to the effects assessable by duplex Doppler ultrasonography.

Plant tryptophan decarboxylase (TDC) converts tryptophan into tryptamine, precursor of indolealkylamine alkaloids. The recent finding of tryptamine metabolites in Citrus plants leads to hypothesize the existence of TDC activity in this genus. Here, we report for the first time that, in Citrus x limon seedlings, deuterium labeled tryptophan is decarboxylated into tryptamine, from which successively deuterated N,N,N-trimethyltryptamine is formed. These results give an evidence of the occurrence of ...

Southeast Asia is one of the richest reservoirs of biodiversity on earth and home to one of the highest concentrations of endemic species. Many protected areas (PA) have been established across the region, but to date no systematic evaluation of their efficacy has been published because no comprehensive dataset was available which could be fed into an analysis of conservation gaps. We collected the geographic range for 1086 mammal species of Southeast Asia and we built species-specific habitat suitability ...

Rhizosphere-competent fungi of the genus Trichoderma are widely used as biofertilizers and biopesticides in commercial formulates because of the multiple beneficial effects on plant growth and disease resistance. In this work, we demonstrate that genetic variability among wild and cultivated tomato lines affects the outcome of the interaction with two 'elite' biocontrol strains of T. atroviride and T. harzianum. The beneficial response, which included enhanced growth and systemic resistance against ...

Conversion of C19 steroids to estrogens is catalyzed by the aromatase enzyme. Inactivating mutations of the aromatase gene are associated with decreased bone mineral density in both men and women. Genetic studies suggest that several genes contribute to the regulation of bone mass via interaction with the modeling and remodeling processes. Among these genes, the aromatase gene is a potential candidate to be evaluated for segregation with bone metabolism and bone mass. A tetranucleotide simple tandem ...

Chestnut cultivars and clonal variants are often classified according to morphological traits and geographic origin. This approach makes discrimination among cultivars ambiguous and difficult. Bone mass could be under control of several polymorphic genes which can modulate bone turnover via reciprocal interactions. One of the genes that can be involved in this process is the calcitonin receptor (CTR) gene. Evidence from cDNA cloning has shown that CTRs have seven potential transmembrane domains and they are known to be expressed in several tissues. In a Japanese population was discovered a novel Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) at the CTR gene by Alu I restriction enzyme ...

Histone modifications through acetylation are fundamental for remodelling chromatin and consequently activating gene expression. The imbalance between acetylation and deacetylation activity causes transcriptional dysregulation associated with several disorders. Flavones, small molecules of plant origin, are known to interfere with class I histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes and to enhance acetylation, restoring cell homeostasis. To investigate the possible physical interactions of flavones on human ...
