CYP2E1 enzyme is related to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) due to its ability for reactive oxygen species production, which can be influenced by polymorphisms in the gene. The aim of this study was to investigate hepatic levels, activity, and polymorphisms of the CYP2E1 gene to correlate it with clinical and histological features in 48 female obese NASH patients.Subjects were divided into three groups: (i) normal; (ii) steatosis; and (iii) steatohepatitis.CYP2E1 protein level was assayed in microsomes ...

We provide a phylogenetic revision of the Pseudocyphellaria crocata complex in the Americas. Specimens traditionally identified as P. crocata, based on their cyanobacterial photobiont, yellow pseudocyphellae, at least partially white medulla, and yellow soralia or soralia-like structures, are shown to represent 13 distinct species, forming a monophyletic group divided into four large clades, three comprising one species each and one containing eight species, plus two taxa for which no molecular ...

Waterborne diseases pose a significant risk in hydroponic crops, especially those caused by some species such as Fusarium, Pythium and Phytophthora. However, there is evidence of an increase in suppressiveness when using aquaculture effluents, as is the case with aquaponic systems. In this work, the incidence of diseases in hydroponic and aquaponic systems inside a greenhouse located in Seville (Spain) has been compared for two pathosystems: strawberry - Phytophthora cactorum - and tomato - Fusarium oxysporum ...

SummaryThe patterns of development of FVC, FEV and %FEV are examined in 217 male and 195 female youths of Aymara ancestry residing in La Paz, Bolivia (altitude 3600 m). The data provide some evidence of an acceleration in the development of lung function relative to stature in Aymara children, beginning during early adolescence, and also indicate that there is a strong relationship between lung function and chest dimensions in Aymara children. Similar patterns have been observed among Quechua youth. ...

Rat brain homogenate autoxidation was assessed from thiobarbituric acid reactant accumulation (TBAR), light emission, and oxygen uptake, The effect of several additives upon TBAR accumulation and light intensity suggests that these parameters can be employed as a reliable measure of the lipoperoxidation extent. From the different time profiles of TBAR accumulation and light emission, it is concluded that instantaneous light emission is not a measure of the lipoperoxidation rate but it is related ...

Abstract The forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV), and ratio of FEV to FVC (%FEV) of 161 male and 158 female youths of European ancestry who were born at high altitudes and who were residing in La Paz, Bolivia (average altitude of 3,600 m) were examined and compared with those for lowland Europeans and highland Aymara Amerindians. FVC and FEV were significantly larger (p < .001) in the La Paz Europeans than in two lowland control samples of European ancestry, with the ...

Hydroa-like cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (hydroa-like CTCL) is an unusual pediatric malignancy with a poor prognosis. An impressive cutaneous rash characterized by edema, blisters, ulcers, crusts, and scars, resembling hidroa vacciniforme, is seen mainly on the face and sometimes on the extremities. The lesion consists of lymphomatous T-cell infiltration of the skin and subcutis with variable exocytosis and angiocentricity. It has been also called edematous, scarring vasculitic panniculitis and hydroa- ...

Sustainable mobility urban policies intend reducing car use and increasing walking, cycling and public transport. However, this transfer from private car to these more sustainable modes is only a real alternative where distances are small and the public transport supply competitive enough. This paper proposes a methodology to calculate the number of trips that can be transferred from private car to other modes in city centres. The method starts analyzing which kind of trips cannot change its mode ( ...

A GC-MS analysis of the essential oil from Piper jacquemontianum Kunth, Piperaceae, showed 34 constituents, consisting mainly of linalool (69.4%), while Piper variabile C. DC. essential oil had 36 constituents, camphor (28.4%), camphene (16.6%) and limonene (13.9%) being the major components. Dichloromethane extracts of both ...

SUMMARY The origin–destination matrix is an important source of information describing transport demand in a region. Most commonly used methods for matrix estimation use link volumes collected on a subset of links in order to update an existing matrix. Traditional volume data collection methods have significant shortcomings because of the high costs involved and the fact that detectors only provide status information at specified locations in the network. Better matrix estimates can be obtained ...

Traffic flow estimates play a key role for strategic and operational planning of transport networks. Although the amplitude and peak times in flows change from location to location, some consistent patterns emerge across a region. Clustering solutions appear as a powerful tool to reveal hidden trends that can easily be applied on historical traffic data to estimate traffic flows. However, these historical data traditionally are collected by detectors on only a limited number of road sections. This ...

Traffic volume is a parameter used to quantify demand in transportation studies, and it is commonly collected by using on-road (fixed) sensors such as inductive loops, cameras, etc. The installation of fixed sensors to cover all roads is neither practical nor economically feasible; therefore, they are only installed on a subset of links. Cellular phone tracking has been an emerging topic developed and investigated during the last few years to extract traffic information. Cellular systems provide ...

The prevalence of asthma and obesity is increasing worldwide, and obesity is a well-documented risk factor for asthma. The mechanisms underlying this association and parallel time trends remain largely unknown but genetic factors may be involved. Here, we report on a common ∼0.45 Mb genomic inversion at 16p11.2 that can be accurately genotyped via SNP array data. We show that the inversion allele protects against the joint occurrence of asthma and obesity in five large independent studies (combined ...

A major challenge of infectious disease elimination is the need to interrupt pathogen transmission across all vulnerable populations. Ethnic minorities are among the key vulnerable groups deserving special attention in disease elimination initiatives, especially because their lifestyle might be intrinsically linked to locations with high transmission risk. There has been a renewed interest in malaria elimination, which has ignited a quest to understand factors necessary for sustainable malaria elimination, ...

Observations of binary stars containing an accreting black hole or neutron star often show x-ray emission extending to high energies (>10 kilo--electron volts), which is ascribed to an accretion disk corona of energetic particles akin to those seen in the solar corona. Despite their ubiquity, the physical conditions in accretion disk coronae remain poorly constrained. Using simultaneous infrared, optical, x-ray, and radio observations of the Galactic black hole system V404 Cygni, showing a rapid synchrotron ...

Coronavirus E protein is a small membrane protein found in the virus envelope. Different coronavirus E proteins share striking biochemical and functional similarities, but sequence conservation is limited. In this report, we studied the E protein topology from the new SARS-CoV-2 virus both in microsomal membranes and in mammalian cells. Experimental data reveal that E protein is a single-spanning membrane protein with the N-terminus being translocated across the membrane, while the C-terminus is ...

Origin–destination (OD) matrices serve as a basis for travel demand modelling. Traditionally, they are derived from travel surveys that collect detailed trip information but with several shortcomings. Mobile phones are regarded as a useful source of information on people's daily mobility. This work explores the use of mobile data in the context of mobility studies by comparing matrices derived from both types of sources over the same region. The results reveal many common features in the trip information. ...
