Parenteral anticoagulants and vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) have constituted the cornerstone of venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment. Meanwhile, direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) provide physicians with an alternative. The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD (GARFIELD)-VTE observes real-world treatment practices.Describe initial anticoagulation (AC) treatment patterns in VTE patients who received parenteral AC, VKAs, and/or DOACs within ±30 days of diagnosis.VTE patients were categorized into ...

Abstract I deficiency is still a worldwide public health problem, with children being especially vulnerable. No nationwide study had been conducted to assess the I status of Spanish children, and thus an observational, multicentre and cross-sectional study was conducted in Spain to assess the I status and thyroid function in schoolchildren aged 6–7 years. The median urinary I (UI) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in whole blood were used to assess the I status and thyroid function, respectively. ...

Solid experimental evidence indicates that EBA-175 is used as a ligand by the Plasmodium falciparum merozoite to bind to human RBC, via different binding processing fragments. Using synthetic peptides and specific receptor-ligand interaction methodology, we have identified 6 high-activity binding sequences from the EBA-175 CAMP strain; peptide 1758 (KSYGTPDNIDKNMSLIHKHN), located in the so-called region I for which no binding activity has been reported before, peptides 1779 (NIDRIYDKNLLMIKEHILAI) ...

Urban areas encompass essential social functions that are fundamental for the development and quality of life. This research explores why the concept of the 15-minute city, while commendable in its aspirations, might fall short in effectively mitigating urban inequalities, especially within densely populated and segregated developing cities. Using Bogotá (Colombia) as a case study, this paper advocates and develops a standardized index based on the availability of essential urban functions within ...

Studies on travel and life satisfaction in vulnerable Global South contexts are scarce. This paper contributes by addressing how travel satisfaction, neighborhood satisfaction, and social capital relate to life satisfaction among a low-income community in Bogotá (Colombia) as a case study. Building on the available literature, we propose six hypotheses to understand such relationships before and after a cable car implementation, considering control and treatment groups. We defined seven latent variables ...

Latin America is a highly urbanized region characterized by remarkable inequality levels, also reflected in an uneven distribution of opportunities, making socio-economic segregation quite visible. Since the individual possibility to travel and therefore access to urban opportunities strongly depends on socio-economic status and the distances to overcome, highly unequal patterns of mobility and accessibility emerge. The continuous expansion of Latin American cities originates specific mobility-related ...

Currently, water pollution represents a serious environmental threat, causing an impact not only to fauna and flora but also to human health. Among these pollutants, inorganic and organic pollutants are predominantly important representing high toxicity and persistence and being difficult to treat using current methodologies. For this reason, several research groups are searching for strategies to detect and remedy contaminated water bodies and effluents. Due to the above, a current review of the ...

The effect of time in the maturation process of Tequila employing two types of casks was studied: A new (labeled as Cask-New) and a medium-toasted cask (15 min at 200 °C) (labeled as Cask-MT). For that purpose, the wood used in the casks was characterized physicochemically, and its properties were contrasted with the physicochemical characterization of the beverage throughout the maturation time. To understand the kinetic maturation process, mathematical models were used. The best model that represented ...

A new fluorescence micromotor-based immunoassay (FMIm) has been developed for procalcitonin (PCT) determination as an early sepsis diagnostic analytical tool. The micromotors combine the high binding capacity of the specific antibodies onto their polymeric polypyrrole outer layer (PPy layer), with their magnetic guidance (Ni layer) and self-propulsion by catalytic generation of oxygen bubbles (PtNP inner layer) to actively recognize the PCT antigen. This FMIm allowed a sensitive (LOD = 0.07 ng mL–1) and ...

Early diagnosis of sepsis, combining blood cultures and inflammation biomarkers, continues to be a challenge, especially in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants because of limited availability of blood samples. A variety of receptors perform the function of attenuating or inhibiting activation of cells in which they are expressed. Examples of these kinds of receptors include TIM-3 and PD-1, among others that have been widely studied in cells of lymphoid origin and, though to a lesser degree, in other cell lines. Today, several studies describe the function of these molecules as part of the diverse mechanisms of immune tolerance that exist in the immune system. This review analyzes the function of some ...

Several studies, in different populations and environments, have shown that severe and light helminthiases diminish and increase allergy symptoms, respectively. However, data on the simultaneous presence of these contrary effects in a single community is lacking. In a rural community from Colombia, effects of helminthiases on allergy were evaluated. In the study population, age and gender-adjusted prevalence of asthma and rhinitis symptoms in the last year was 14.6% and 34.1%, respectively (N = 739). ...

Plant water-use efficiency (WUE) describes the ratio of carbon gain to water loss during photosynthesis. It has been shown that WUE varies among crop genotypes, and crops with high WUE can increase agricultural production in the face of finite water supply. We used measures of leaf carbon isotopic composition to compare WUE among 24 cultivars of Persea americana Mill (avocado) to determine genotypic variability in WUE, identify potentially efficient cultivars, and to better understand how breeding ...

A simple model for the magnetization reversal process of low aspect-ratio ferromagnetic nanotubes (MNTs) is presented. Because of advantages over other geometries, these structures are interesting for biomedical applications, such as magnetic hyperthermia cancer therapy, where the heat released during magnetic reversal is used to destroy tumors. For example, the tubular geometry provides two independent functional surfaces that may be selectively manipulated and also gives a storage cavity. Owing ...

The use of bio-derivatives as acaricides would be an effective and safe method of tick control. The acaricidal effect of essential oils obtained from Bursera graveolens (Burseraceae) and Schinus molle (Anacardiaceae), traditionally used by indigenous Ecuadorian medicine as insecticides, was tested on larvae of cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Essential oils were obtained from mature fruits by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography. The acaricidal activity of essential ...

A Trametes versicolor laccase was functionally expressed on the membrane surface of Saccharomyces cerevisiae EBY100. Laccase expression was increased 6.57-fold by medium optimization and surpassed production by the native strain. Maximal laccase and biomass production reached 19 735 ± 1719 Ug−1 and 6.22 ± 0.53 gL−1 respectively, after 2 d of culture. Optimum oxidization of all substrates by laccase was observed at pH 3. Laccase showed high affinity towards substrates used with Km (mM) and Vmax (μmol min− ...

The transmembrane protein TIM-3 is a type I protein expressed by sub-types of lymphoid cells, such as lymphocytes Th1, Th17, Tc1, Nk, as well as in myeloid cells. Scientific evidence indicates that this molecule acts as a negative regulator of T lymphocyte activation, and that its expression is modified in viral infections or autoimmune diseases. In addition to evidence from lymphoid cells, the function of TIM-3 has been investigated in myeloid cells, such as monocytes, macrophages and dendritic ...

This paper presents the results of a power quality study carried out in an industrial distribution system. The main objective of this study was to quantify the negative impact caused by voltage sags in industrial processes and its relationship to generated interruptions. A series of measurements of power quality variations were taken at the substation that feeds the circuit and at the point-of-common coupling of each industrial user. The new standard IEEE Std 1564-2014 "Guide for Voltage Sag Indices" ...
