Abstract Background Early diagnosis of primary immunodeficiency such as severe combined immunodeficiency ( SCID ) and X‐linked agammaglobulinemia ( XLA ) improves outcome of affected children. T‐cell‐receptor‐excision circles ( TREC s) and kappa‐deleting‐recombination‐excision circles ( KREC s) determination from dried blood spots ( DBS ) identify neonates with severe T‐ and/or B‐lymphopenia. No prospective data exist of the impact of gestational age ( GA ) and birth weight ( BW ) on TREC s and KREC s values. Methods TREC ...

Cross-reactivity of plant foods is an important phenomenon in allergy, with geographical variations with respect to the number and prevalence of the allergens involved in this process, whose complexity requires detailed studies. We have addressed the role of thaumatin-like proteins (TLPs) in cross-reactivity between fruit and pollen allergies. A representative panel of 16 purified TLPs was printed onto an allergen microarray. The proteins selected belonged to the sources most frequently associated ...

In 2007 and 2008 the performance of a solar powered absorption cooling installation was analyzed. The solar cooling system consists of 37.5 m2 of flat plate collectors, a 4.5 kW, single effect, LiBr–H2O rotary absorption chiller and a dry cooler tower. The performance analysis of the solar driven chiller shows average values of COP close to 0.6 in 2007 and between 0.46 and 0.56 in 2008. Concerning to the average cooling power, the chiller reaches values between 4.0 and 5.6 kW in 2007 and between ...

The parabolic-trough collector (PTC) is the most commonly used technology in concentrating solar power (CSP) plants worldwide, and particularly in Spain. However, for now this type of large-size collector cannot be officially tested by an accredited laboratory or certified by an accredited certification body, as there is no standard adapted to it, and the current standards published for solar thermal collectors are not completely applicable. This paper summarizes the testing procedure and validation ...

ABSTRACT The current paper explores the possibility of using pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) as part of the post-treatment of existing desalination plants: a membrane-based PRO system would be used to transform osmotic energy of the retentate into hydraulic pressure; this pressure is then used to generate electricity in a turbine. For this, a source of water with lower osmotic pressure would be needed: municipal or industrial wastewater, brackish water, etc. From the point of view of implementation, ...

Abstract This paper presents an update of a dynamic library of reverse osmosis plants (ROSIM). This library has been developed in order to be used for optimization, simulation, controller testing or fault detection strategies and a simple fault tolerant control is tested. ROSIM is based on a set of components representing the different units of a typical reverse osmosis plant (sand filters, cartridge filters, exchanger energy recoveries, pumps, membranes, storage tanks, control systems, valves, etc.). ...

This paper presents a control system for the operation of desalination plants powered by locally generated renewable energy. To cope with the variability of the water demands and the available energy, the amount of water produced must be manipulated optimally. This is carried out by regulating a variable speed pump, using hybrid predictive control, which takes into account the operational limits of both the pump and the process. The operation is complex because the scheduling of the cleaning operations ...

The chemical pretreatment with ozone of rye and wheat straws was carried out in a fixed bed reactor. The effect of ozone pretreatment time on lignin removal was determined. Glucose and xylose concentrations in the hydrolysates were also measured after the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis step. Acid insoluble lignin reacts with ozone within the first 90 min reaction. Insoluble lignin reduction was about 50%. The higher hydrolysis yields were obtained after 120 min ozonation: the glucose yield ranged ...

Abstract Invasive fusariosis (IF) is associated with severe neutropenia in patients with concurrent hematologic conditions. We conducted a retrospective observational study to characterize the epidemiology of IF in 18 Spanish hospitals during 2000–2015. In that time, the frequency of IF in nonneutropenic patients increased from 0.08 cases per 100,000 admissions in 2000–2009 to 0.22 cases per 100,000 admissions in 2010–2015. Nonneutropenic IF patients often had nonhematologic conditions, such as chronic ...

Pulmonary complications are common in primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) and contribute to morbidity and mortality in these patients. However, their varied presentation and a general lack of awareness of PID in this setting make early diagnosis and treatment difficult. The study of cross-reactivity in allergy is key to both understanding. the allergic response of many patients and providing them with a rational treatment In the present study, protein microarrays and a co-sensitization graph approach were used in conjunction with an allergen microarray immunoassay. This enabled us to include a wide number of proteins and a large number of patients, and to study sensitization profiles among members of the LTP family. Fourteen LTPs from the most frequent plant food- ...

Numerous studies of interactions between urchins and algae in temperate areas have shown an important structuring effect of sea urchin populations. These studies focused almost wholly on the effect of high urchin densities on laminarian forests. In contrast, algal communities below 5–6 m depth in the northwestern Mediterranean are characterised by low sea urchin densities (<5 ind m−2) and the absence of laminarian forests. No previous research has addressed sea urchin/algal interactions in this type ...

Background Postzygotic de novo mutations lead to the phenomenon of gene mosaicism. The 3 main types are called somatic, gonadal, and gonosomal mosaicism, which differ in terms of the body distribution of postzygotic mutations. Mosaicism has been reported occasionally in patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) since the early 1990s, but its real involvement has not been systematically addressed. Objective We sought to investigate the incidence of gene mosaicism in patients with PIDs. Methods ...

This paper deals with the optimal operational strategy of a reverse osmosis (RO) plant for remote sites. The electricity supply to these plants comes usually from renewable energies (wind and solar), when they are not temporarily available, they are complemented by a diesel generator and batteries. The water demand of small settlements in arid regions suffers strong variations along a day. As the higher demand of water usually occurs when solar energy is more available, the operational expenses can ...

The bacterial version of the mammalian signal recognition particle (SRP) is well conserved and essential to all known bacteria. The genes for the Streptomyces lividans SRP components have been cloned and characterized. FtsY resembles the mammalian SRP receptor and the S. lividans SRP consists of Ffh, a homologue of the mammalian SRP54 protein, and scRNA, which is a small size RNA of 82 nt in length. Co-immunoprecipitation studies confirmed that Ffh and scRNA are probably the only components of the ...

Abstract Objective Late presenters (LP) for HIV care are associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates. Our aim was to describe the characteristics associated with LP among adolescents in Spain. Identification of particular features may help in the design of strategies for improvement. Methods Late‐presenting adolescents diagnosed at 12–19 years of age and enrolled in the Spanish paediatric and adult HIV/AIDS cohorts (CoRIS‐CoRISpe) from 2004 to 2019 were selected. LP were defined as those ...

Summary Background Plant profilins are described as minor allergens, although with some exceptions in foods such as melon, watermelon or orange. In fact, they could be responsible for many cross‐reactions among distantly related species. This is likely to be a consequence of the presence of common epitopes.
