In this manuscript we present the effects of ZnF2 concentration on the optical and physical properties of Er3+-doped oxy-fluoride tellurite glasses (7500 ppm Er2O3-(80−x)TeO2-xZnF2-20ZnO, where x = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mol%). In general, as the concentration of ZnF2 increases: (i) the thermal stability, the optical transparency window, and the lifetime of the 4I13/2 level increase; (ii) the density, the linear refractive index, the Rayleigh scattering loss, and the OH− ion concentration decrease; ...

The genus Phytomonas includes parasites that are etiological agents of important plant diseases, especially in Central and South America. These parasites are transmitted to plants via the bite of an infected phytophagous hemipteran. Despite the economic impact of these parasites, many basic questions regarding the genus Phytomonas remain unanswered, such as the mechanism by which the parasites cope with the immune response of the insect vector. In this report, using a model of systemic infection, ...

Palaemon pandalirformis (shrimp) is a species widely distributed in the Brazilian coastal region and with an important economic role. In addition, this organism is considered an indicator of environmental pollution in estuaries; however, its physiological responses to toxic environmental pollutants, including pesticides and nanomaterials, are not well known, mainly, the effects of co-exposure. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the ecotoxicological effects of co-exposure between oxidized ...

Abstract A core question involving both plant physiology and community ecology is whether traits from different organs are coordinated across species, beyond pairwise trait correlations. The strength of within‐community trait coordination has been hypothesized to increase along gradients of environmental harshness, due to the cost of adopting ecological strategies out of the viable niche space supported by the abiotic conditions. We evaluated the strength of trait relationship and coordination in ...

The development of a sensing membrane for the determination of gaseous sulphur dioxide is described. An organopalladium complex, Pd2(dpm)2Cl2 (dichloro-bis-(diphenylphosphine)-methane dipalladium I), was immobilised in a poly(vinyl chloride) thin film plasticised with ortho-nitrophenyloctylether (o-NPOE). Several membranes were prepared, using 20, 25 and 30% of PVC; 1, 5 and 8% of palladium complex and enough o-NPOE to make a total of 100 mg, which was dissolved in 1.0 mL of THF. The sensing membranes ...

Abstract The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous ...

People tend to evaluate information from reliable sources more favourably, but it is unclear exactly how perceivers' worldviews interact with this source credibility effect. In a large and diverse cross-cultural sample (N = 10,195 from 24 countries), we presented participants with obscure, meaningless statements attributed to either a spiritual guru or a scientist. We found a robust global source credibility effect for scientific authorities, which we dub 'the Einstein effect': across all 24 countries ...

Anopheles mating is initiated by the swarming of males at dusk followed by females flying into the swarm. Here, we show that mosquito swarming and mating are coordinately guided by clock genes, light, and temperature. Transcriptome analysis shows up-regulation of the clock genes period (per) and timeless (tim) in the head of field-caught swarming Anopheles coluzzii males. Knockdown of per and tim expression affects Anopheles gambiae s.s. and Anopheles stephensi male mating in the laboratory, and it ...

In seasonally dry tropical forests, plant functional type can be classified as deciduous low wood density, deciduous high wood density, or evergreen high wood density species. While deciduousness is often associated with drought-avoidance and low wood density is often associated with tissue water storage, the degree to which these functional types may correspond to diverging and unique water use strategies has not been extensively tested. We examined (a) tolerance to water stress, measured by predawn ...

Abstract Malaria elimination requires tools that interrupt parasite transmission. Here, we characterize B cell receptor responses among Malian adults vaccinated against the first domain of the cysteine-rich 230 kDa gamete surface protein Pfs230, a key protein in sexual stage development of P. falciparum parasites. Among nine Pfs230 human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that we generated, one potently blocks transmission to mosquitoes in a complement-dependent manner and reacts to the gamete surface; ...

Although seasonal rainfall is the main factor regulating plant phenology in the dry tropics, some species flush and flower during the dry season. This apparent paradox was investigated in woody species in semiarid Brazil. A total of 500 mm of water was supplied to three 100 m2 plots along 12 weeks from the beginning of the dry season, when the photoperiod was the shortest. Six deciduous high wood density species (HWD; ≥ 0.5 g cm−3) that had flushed and flowered during the rainy season, had low water ...

Significance The surface protein Pfs47 makes Plasmodium falciparum parasites “undetectable” to the mosquito immune system. We proposed the “lock and key” model in which a parasite expressing a compatible Pfs47 haplotype “the key,” is able to evade the mosquito immune system, by interacting with a mosquito Pfs47 receptor “the lock,” which differs between vectors from different continents. Here, we uncovered the identity of the mosquito midgut “Pfs47 receptor” (P47Rec). P47Rec has two natterin domains and ...

We compared leaf and stem traits of 22 woody species in the Brazilian Caatinga to investigate whether deciduous (DC) and evergreen (EV) species have divergent water-use strategies. Our hypothesis was that DC trees compensate for their short leaf longevity by being less conservative in water use and showing higher variation in the seasonal water potential after leaf shedding. ...
